New in 2021: The Army Combat Fitness Test — what you need to know
The new Army Combat Fitness Test officially became the service’s test of record this past October, but lawmakers are poised to hold off any further implementation, pending an independent study to determine how it will impact deployed soldiers, recruiting and retention.
If the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act passes in its current form, a provision in the law will require an independent study to determine the “extent, if any, to which the test would adversely impact” soldiers “stationed or deployed” to areas that make it difficult to conduct “outdoor physical training on a frequent or sustained basis,” the defense bill reads.
West Point accuses more than 70 cadets of cheating in worst academic scandal in nearly 45 years
More than 70 cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point were accused of cheating on a math exam, the worst academic scandal since the 1970s at the Army’s premier training ground for officers.
Fifty-eight cadets admitted cheating on the exam, which was administered remotely because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of them have been enrolled in a rehabilitation program and will be on probation for the remainder of their time at the academy. Others resigned, and some face hearings that could result in their expulsion.
The scandal strikes at the heart of the academy’s reputation for rectitude, espoused by its own moral code, which is literally etched in stone:
“A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”
Tim Bakken, a law professor at West Point, called the scandal a national security issue. West Point cadets become senior leaders the nation depends on.
Army vs. Navy Game score: Black Knights shut out Midshipmen in the fog for fourth win in last five meetings
Army West Point beat Navy 15-0 on Saturday in the 121st Army-Navy Game, picking up its fourth win in the last five meetings between the teams. It was a 3-0 game after the first three quarters, but Army broke through with a touchdown and safety in the fourth quarter to put it away.
Army quarterback Tyhier Tyler was the star on offense for the Black Knights as he rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown on 26 attempts. He also completed his lone pass attempt in the game, a 28-yard pick up on a wheel route in the second quarter that set up Army’s first field goal. It was a game dominated by the two defenses as Army finished the day with 162 yards of offense while holding Navy to 117.
14 Fort Hood leaders disciplined as probe finds ‘permissive environment for sexual assault’ at the Army base
Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy said 14 leaders at Fort Hood have been suspended or relieved from their positions.
An independent review found that the command climate at the Fort Hood military base in Texas created a “permissive environment for sexual assault and sexual harassment,” according to a report released Tuesday.
Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy said Tuesday that 14 leaders at Fort Hood have been suspended or relieved from their positions.
The report comes after the disappearance and killing of Army Spc. Vanessa Guillén earlier this year.
McCarthy appointed a five-member civilian panel in July to conduct an independent review looking into Fort Hood’s command climate and culture after Guillén’s disappearance. Guillén’s family said she had told relatives and colleagues at Fort Hood that she had been sexually harassed at the base.
While officials at the time said they had no credible information or reports that Guillén was sexually assaulted, the allegations prompted many service members to share their experiences with sexual assault and harassment on social media using the hashtag #IAmVanessaGuillen.
The independent review panel also found that the Army’s Sexual Harassment and Assault Response and Prevention Program (SHARP) had not achieved its mandate to curb sexual assault and harassment due to structural failures as well as a command climate that failed to instill the program’s core values below the brigade level, subsequently degrading confidence in the program, according to the report.
