This is the view from above the Little Buffalo to the south. The bald spots are a bit less noticeable with the tree limbs bare, but two of them have dark green cypress beside them.
The east face of the Buffalo is anchored on one side by Raven Rocks, and the other by the cliff faced bulge of the 'hump'. In between is the concave slope which can catch the shadow as the sun climbs higher in the morning.
This is a seldom seen view showing the cascade of titled slabs below the platform of rocks we usually see at the summit. In spite of the name, most of the ravens I've seen are flying the air bubble elevators shown in Fred First's photos.
I've been trying to get a friend, Bob Harrison, to take me up and get some photos of the Buffalo as seen from the air. Now is a great time for this as the leaves are just starting to bud out, but have not yet obscured the terrain.
Aircraft is a Varga 2150A Kachina, built 1979 in Phoenix, AZ; 150 HP Lycoming, standard category, fixed gear, fixed pitch prop, full flaps, tandem cockpit, greenhouse canopy, sweet flying li'l bird! Owned and flown by Bob Harrison of Rural Retreat, a retired Continental Airline pilot and the father of three sons in West Point's Long Gray Line.
