Spring Wildflowers

These pictures are a collection of common wildflowers that have been abundant throughout the spring on Buffalo Mountain. Most of them can be found along the trail leading to the summit. These first two pictures I've dubbed the faery tree. It is a gnarled old tree just below the summit that has been ringed with little blue flowers.

This strange little plant was so unique I had to look it up on the internet to find out more information. It is called squaw root, and was apparently used for medicinal purposes. This one was found on the south slope growing among decayed hardwood.

The picture on the left was taken mid way up the trail, but these small flowers were visible in many places.

The picture on the right was taken next to the parking area, but I did not see it anywhere else. I may have caught it at the beggining of the bloom cycle.

Both of these pictures were taken near the parking area, and the flowers were plentiful.

All of these pictures were taken in late May and early June. Click on any of the images for a larger picture.

Wild Orchids

Because of the unique soil conditions, there are a number of wild orchids growing on and around Buffalo Mountain. This purple lady's slipper was found just below the tree line at the summit. It is hard to believe that something so delicate can survive the harsh conditions.

This yellow orchid is more rare, and we found it at the base of the mountain near Buffalo Mountain Road. Both of these pictures were taken in early June.

This purple orchid was found by Arne Smith. He took this picture in early July. Click on any of the images for a larger picture.
