George Martin Dell
He graduated from Huntington Park High School where he was known for his debate skills and his interest in journalism. George attended University of Southern California (USC) briefly before enlisting in the United States Army at 18 years old. He was appointed to the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York in 1944 and retired from the service in 1950. After retirement from the service, he attended law school at USC, where he was editor and chief of the law review and a member of the Order of the Coif and Phi Kappa Phi. He met and married, Joy Miller, the red headed love of his life. They had two daughters, Adrienne and Gloria. George entered the practice of law in 1953. He was selected as a Court Commission in 1961, and was appointed to the Municipal Court bench in 1963 and elevated to the Superior Court in 1966. He retired from the bench in 1985 and spent the balance of his legal career in private dispute resolution. Although dedicated to his work in the law, it did not define him. George was a brilliant scholar, a lover of literature, history, fine arts and music. He possessed a quick wit. Although he could be tough, he only expected others to do their best, no more or less than what he expected of himself. He was also an avid golfer and swimmer, a world traveler, an accomplished limerist and crossword puzzler, a life long democrat and fanatic USC football fan and a lover of cats and dogs. Above all, George adored his three girls and spent much of his life demonstrating that love. In addition to Joy, Adrienne and Gloria, George leaves behind his grandchildren Alex, Jenna, Carlos and Kathryn, son-in-law Larry and best friend Carrots. We miss him already. |
