Teodoro Picado, Jr.
Teodoro "Ted" Picado, Jr. was born in Costa Rica on 22
April 1927 and was appointed on a Presidential appointment as a foreign
cadet to West Point.
Ted's classmates observed: "Pic's desire to
graduate from the Academy is exemplified in his acceptance of the demotion
from an Army captain to a West Point plebe. Despite his difficulty with
the English language, his enthusiasm and determination enabled him to rise
constantly in class standing. Ted's adaptability and amiable disposition
are bound do lead to great achievements once he has returned to active
duty." At West Point Ted belonged to the Camera, Portuguese,
Radio, and Spanish Clubs and he was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year.
On graduation Ted reported for duty as Aide de Camp to the Chief
of Staff at Campo de Marte in Managua, Nicaragua. Costa Rica abolished the army in 1948. He joined the Army of Nicaragua upon graduation from USMA at the invitation of Gen. A. Somoza, USMA '46.
Ted was commissioned as a Captain. (his old rank in the army of CR, which they acknowledged).
Ted was then assigned to the !st Battalion, 3rd inf. Company and detached to the office of the Chief of Staff. (Gen Somoza USMA '46).
Because of political
changes in Nicaragua, Ted saw fit to resign his Captain's commission in
1954 and he returned to the United States.
In 1960 he returned to Nicaragua and managed many companies of the Somoza group including El Porvenir. On May 13, 1978 Ted and Susan returned to the USA (Miami, FL), due to the deteriorating political and military situation in Nicaragua.
He served as General
Manager for El Porvenir Sociedad Anonima until 1970 when he was named Vice
President of the Brisk Fin Group. He served in that capacity until 1979.
Ted was then named Vice President of Export and Import, Inc. and served
with them until 1981.
His last position was as Sales Manager for
Faith Freight Forwarding Corporation and he served as such until 1984 when
he retired.
Ted and his wife Susan made their home in Miami,
Florida.
Susan passed away on August 26, 2004
