His West Point classmates recall: "Whoever made the statement that all Texans are loud and boastful obviously never met Johnny. Quiet and modest, he has given most of his time and ability to academic coaching, but frequently he finds time to serenade his roommates with his trombone. While attending Sunset High School in Dallas, he was a Major in the R. O. T. C., this experience was a great help in preparing him for West Point."
During his cadet days Johnny was a Sunday School Teacher yearling, cow, and first class years; was with the Radio Club yearling year; with the Camera Club cow and first class years; with the Dance Orchestra first class year; and was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year.
Upon graduation Johnny, first married Margaret Lee Barrier, went in the Corps of Engineers and after completing the Basic Engineers Course at Fort Belvoir, Virginia reported to the 37th Engineer Battalion in Germany where he served from 1952 to 1955.
While in the Army, he served in Virginia, Missouri, Germany, Illinois, District of Columbia, Saudi Arabia, and New York.
In 1957, he graduated the University of Illinois with Master of Science in Civil Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
From 1961 to 1971, he served as a faculty member of the Department of Mechanics, USMA.
In 1971, Johnny retired from the United States Army in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services. He accepted a position as instructor of engineering at Eastfield College. After joining the Dallas County Community College District, he served from 1972 to 1982 as Chairman of Eastfield College's Mathematics and Engineering Division. On 11-06-04 John checks in a follows:
Hi to all:
It's a good day here in Dallas, hope yours is as well!
This year I have served as the President of The Technical Club of Dallas, a
club formed in 1919 and which instigated the College of Engineering at SMU. Now
we are mostly old folks with continuing interest in helping folks learn about
technology and enjoying bimonthly meetings. November 15, we will have a talk on
how the brain processes hearing signals from the ears. We now need to know
about that.
I am making the patrol schedules for our neighborhood volunteers in patrol
group for the third year. (my last)
Margaret and I enjoy the Dallas Symphony, Theater Three, and a 4 - couple's
party bridge group. We have a Daughter with husband and two sons in Dallas. I
and Margaret each have a sister in Dallas, one single - one married.
We keep our one story home on a 70 x 110 foot city lot without paid help short
of plumbers and electricians. We have fig, plum, apricot, almond and pecan and
oak trees and grape vines, roses mums and a few other flowers.
We and Tom and Darlene James attended Founders Day in the north-west edge of
our metroplex and we attended Ed Lukert's Memorial service in Arlington, TX and
visited Carol and Family at her home. We visited with the Grahams' , Bill
Thomas and the James' at the memorial seervice as well as Ed's family.
Last summer we convened in Ketchum Idaho (close to Sun Valley) for a biannual
vacation with our three children and their families. Next summer, Margaret and
I are hoping to revisit Paris and take a barge cruise on the river between Lyon
and Dijon. The summer after that, we are hoping to visit with you all at West
Point.
We enjoy staying in touch electronically with you all with the help of Dick
Breakiron et al.
All the Best!
Margaret and John Daigh
