WELCOME PARTY:

On Saturday night, 22 February, the class had a welcome party in our apartment (Goodpasture/ Guthrie/ Klein/ Stiles), which doubled as the Ski Czar’s command post. Some photos follow.

Picture 6. Karla Moellering, Howard Stiles (in his signature West Point Class of 1959 Ski Team T-shirt: “Life’s Short; Ski Hard”) and Big John McNerney

Picture 7. Christa Klein, John Guthrie and Eileen Stiles. (Actually, this picture was taken sometime other than during the welcome party.)

Picture 8. Gary Beech, smiling as usual

Picture 9. Nadine Beech, also smiling as usual

Picture 10. Tom Seybold with his daughter-in-law Karen. (Tom’s wife’s name is Karen and their son Tom’s wife’s name is also Karen. Confusing, says Tom Sr.)

Picture 11. Paul Sper. (That’s John Guthrie behind him, in the orange Tahoe Indian shirt.)

Picture 13. Tim Matthes and John Moellering in a very serious discussion

I draw your attention to the conical, black and white “cow hat” in the background, the one with the detachable, Velcro-fastened horns on it. This was my entry into our annual Most Tasteless Hat in the World Contest, which I won – pitted against John Guthrie’s hat – for the second year running. The hat bears on the front a high-quality embroidery, showing it came originally from Munich’s Oktoberfest, as well as a small cowbell.

John Moellering couldn’t know, of course, but, two nights later, I would raffle off that beauty for three dollars to Karla Moellering, who bought it for John’s impending birthday. We all waited in vain, though, for him to wear it on the ski slopes the following day. I suspect that John immediately shredded it through a garbage disposal machine.

Picture 14. Lee Bell, who is a fast and skillful skier

Picture 15. Flo Bell, Lee’s sister – always game on the slopes

I didn’t get many pictures of Guy Heath or Bobbie Fitzgerald, who generally skied on other slopes.

Nor will I tell how Guy Heath skied into a whole bunch of us who were waiting to in the liftline, and fell mortified at our very feet.

The Heaths and Fitzgeralds stayed at a condo outside the Park City Mountain Resort area. Unfortunately, we didn’t get much of a chance to ski with them – except, of course, when Guy “dropped in.”

Picture 17. Bill Fitzgerald, having a real yuk

                                                                                Picture 18. Donna Heath

Picture 19. Studying the spread, or – “Who ate all the shrimp?” Tom Seybold, Lee Bell, John   Moellering, Eileen Stiles and Tom’s son Dave (I think).  Note the hat in the background.

Picture 20. Flo Bell, Frank Campbell, Karla Moellering and Howard Stiles

Picture 21. Tim Matthes in a happier mood than the previous picture of him

Picture 22. Paul Sper and John Guthrie. (Either Paul is seated or John is standing on a chair. And get a load of that shirt!)
