Summer Leaders Seminar

The United States Military Academy conducts the Summer Leaders Seminar (SLS), formerly known as the Invitational Academic Workshop for academically gifted high school juniors going into their senior year. The SLS is a weeklong program of academic workshops, military training, physical fitness training and intramural athletics.

800 highly talented high school juniors going into their senior year are invited to attend the SLS each year. The SLS is normally conducted in the second or third week of June. High school students who participate in the SLS are led and supervised by West Point cadets.

 

Basic Requirements for Summer Leaders Seminar (SLS):

      ●  you must be a United States citizen;

      ●  you are currently a junior in high school and will graduate high school in the year 2007;

      ●  you must be at least 16 years old on July 1 of the year you would enter SLS; and

      ●  you must not be married, pregnant and will have no legal obligation to support a child

          or children on July 1 of the year you would enter SLS.

 

There are two SLS sessions available in 2006.  The first session begins Saturday June 3 and ends on Friday June 9.  The second session starts on Saturday June 10 and concludes Friday June 16.  Additional SLS information is available at the following web site:

FAQs about the Summer Program

Q: What summer program does West Point offer for high school students?


West Point conducts the Summer Leaders Seminar (SLS) for high school juniors going into their senior year. It is a fast-paced program of academic seminars, military training, physical fitness training and intramural athletics conducted during the second or third week in June each year. West Point cadets serve as squad leaders for all aspects of the weeklong seminar. 800 high school juniors can attend the seminar each year from an applicant pool of approximately 3000-4000 annually.

For the Summer of 2005; Session I will be held during the period of June 4-10; and Session II will be held during the period of June 11-17.

 

Q: How do students apply for the Summer Leaders Seminar?

All high school juniors in the SLS candidate database on February 1st will automatically be mailed an application for the upcoming summer's SLS. High school juniors interested in the SLS can request that their name be added to the database via a web link on this page, which is only available from September 1st through April 1st (SLS applications are not mailed to candidates after April 1st). Candidates who contact West Point between February 1st and April 1st should specifically request an SLS application.

 

Q: How do students get selected/invited to the Summer Leaders Seminar?


Invitations to the seminar are awarded on a competitive basis using the academic, athletic and extracurricular information provided on the SLS application form.

 

Q: What does the SLS cost?


The cost of the SLS is $325.00. This covers room, board and all classroom/training materials.  Students must pay for their own travel expenses to and from West Point.
