  NEW COMMANDANT

Sometime this summer West Point will welcome its 68th commandant and say goodbye to its 67th, Brig. Gen. Eric T. Olson, who will be promoted to Major General and moving on to command the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Brig. Gen. Leo A. Brooks Jr., the assistant division commander (Maneuver), 1st Armored Division, U.S. Army Europe and Seventh Army, Germany, has been named to succeed Olson.

Report dates have yet to be determined for both Olson and Brooks.

THAYER AWARD PRESENTED TO SENATOR DANIEL K. INOUYE

The Association of Graduates at West Point presented the 44th annual Thayer Award April 18 to Sen. Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii.

Inouye enlisted in the U.S. Army’s 442nd Regimental Combat Team in 1943 at the age of 18. The senior senator has fought for improved education and health care for all children, affordable housing, additional jobs, health and human services in rural communities and for protection of our natural resources.

Named after the fifth superintendent of West Point, Sylvanus Thayer, the AOG presents the Thayer Award to citizens who exemplify the ideals of "Duty, Honor, Country" and whose services or accomplishments represent this nations interests.

A FAVORITE MESS HALL STORY

Gunner announced, “Sir, the dessert for this meal is Cherry pie.  Does anyone not care for cherry pie?”  After struggling for some time to cut nine (or was it seven) equal portions, and making far more than the necessary number of cuts, he grabbed his spoon, stirred the pie furiously, and then announced, “Sir, the dessert for this meal is cherry cobbler.”  I think they let him fall out for originality.
