THIRD
ANNUAL JAMIE MORRIS MEMORIAL
LEADERSHIP AWARD John S. Glassmyer is the third recipient
of the Benjamin R. “Jamie” Morris Memorial Leadership Award. The award is
given to an outstanding JROTC student at Hillsborough High School in Tampa,
FL, as chosen by the senior military instructors. The recipient of this
award, which is presented by our Parents Club, receives a medal and a $100 U.
S. Savings Bond. John will graduate in May from the International
Baccalaureate Program at Hillsborough High, where he was a National Merit
Finalist. John was a member of the Cross Country Team for two years and has
worked significant hours as a volunteer with the local Habitat for Humanity
chapter. John planned to attend the United States Naval Academy, until he was
medically disqualified due to a colorblind condition. After graduation from
Hillsborough High School John will serve in a variety of community service
assignments in the United States during a year with the NCCC division of
Americorps, the service program administered by the Corporation for National
Service. We wish John well and hope that after this year of service that he
may want to apply for a waiver and admission to West Point. The 1999 winner
of the Jamie Morris Leadership Award at Hillsborough High School, Nathan
Brown will be a member of the Class of 2005 at West Point. MEMBERSHIP
RENEWALS DUE BY JUNE 30, 2001 Annual membership dues are due by June 30
of each year. The ideal time to “re-up” is at the June picnic to be held on
June 16. Remember to receive the Plebe-Parent Survival Manual or Firstie
Manual you must be a member in good standing. Also, if you want to see your
cadet’s picture and name in the Club’s annual salute to graduating seniors in
the Howitzer, you must have been a member for your cadet’s entire
West Point career. A membership application is attached for your convenience.
Fill it out and bring it with your check to the June picnic. Parent
memberships are still a bargain at $25 per year and Associate Memberships for
relatives and friends are available at $15 per year. Associate members receive
all of the benefits that parent members receive (except the right to vote or
hold office). Associate Memberships are great gifts and a good way to keep
the extended family and friends informed. |

MAJOR
GENERAL(P) WILLIAM J. LENNOX JR. NAMED 56th SUPERINTENDENT
OF UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY The President has nominated Major General
William J. Lennox Jr. for appointment to the grade of Lieutenant General and
reassignment as the 56th Superintendent of the U. S. Military Academy. Lennox
is currently serving as the Chief, Legislative Liaison, Office of the
Secretary of the Army. Lieutenant General and current Superintendent Daniel
W. Christman, who is retiring after serving five years as Superintendent,
will pass the command to Lennox in a ceremony on June 8, at Trophy Point.
Lennox is a graduate of West Point Class of 1971, and received a master’s
degree and Ph.D. from Princeton University. He was a White House Fellow and a
Senior Service College Fellow at Harvard University. He also taught in the
Department of English at West Point from 1979-82. During his career, Lennox
has held all command and staff positions in field artillery culminating as
the Commander, 24th Infantry Division Artillery at Fort Stewart, GA. Lennox
is married to the former Anne M. Theysohn. They have three sons: Matt and
Andrew, both field artillery lieutenants, and Jon, who will graduate from
Texas A&M University later this month. NICKI ROBBINS NAMED PATRIOT LEAGUE
SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR For the second consecutive year, Nicki
Robbins (Class of 2002) from Seminole, has been selected as the Patriot League Softball Player of the
year. In addition Nicki was selected to her third consecutive first team
all-league team. Nicki batted .423 this year and set a single-season record
with 17 doubles to go along with one triple and four home runs. In only three
years Nicki holds five single season and five career Black Knight records,
including the all-time hits leader with 172. She was also named to the
Patriot League All-Decade Team after only her first two years.
