CADETS AND CARS
Cadets are not permitted to have
cars on the reservation prior to the end of
Spring Break for Cows today. In 'olden' days,
that date applied to Firsties. Local car dealers
used to be invited to the annual car show and
display their wares under the supervision of the
Cadet Car Committee. Cadets, being the virile
young people that they are naturally went for the
sportiest, 'coolest' looking car they could find
rather than the sedate sedans, etc. Come
graduation day, some suddenly realized the dream
car did not have much, if any, room for luggage,
etc. that they had failed to ship to their first
duty station and it was always fun watching them
trying to figure out what to do. Those who
graduated in the WWII classes and immediately
thereafter were simply happy to be able to get
what was available in those days. Some cadets
also bought used cars from members of the USMA
staff rather than go into deep debt for a car.
