How do I update my e-mail address on the mailing lists?

If you want to receive the e-mail to usma1989 or usma1989-forum at a different e-mail address than you currently are receiving it at, please send an e-mail to Warren Hearnes at wp46268@west-point.org.  Be sure to include your new address somewhere in the e-mail so we know what to change it to!

When we make the change it will actually appear as an "unsubscribe" from the old address and a "subscribe" for the new one, so you may see a couple of messages from majordomo@west-point.org — that’s our mailing list software.

USMA ’89 Mailing Lists

{mosimage}The class has two separate e-mail lists that you can opt into:

  • usma1989:  Our main e-mail list, currently with 700+ addresses.  This is used for disseminating important information to the class on a periodic basis.
  • usma1989-forum:  A smaller list where discussion of a variety of topics can take place.

The usma1989 list has a set of specific rules, while usma1989-forum is much more relaxed.

usma1989 Guidelines:  This list is maintained by WP-ORG.  WP-ORG is a non-profit organization that is not affiliated with USMA, AOG, or any government institution.  There are no user fees.  All hardware/software costs are paid through voluntary donations by the members of the lists.  The personnel who run/maintain these lists are volunteers.  As such, membership in this list is a privilege.  It can be revoked by the moderator at any time if the following rules are not adhered to.

  • Broadcast messages must conform to the Mission Statement, i.e. have some connection to West Point and/or the Class of ’89.
  • Users agree to abide by a prohibition against political, religious, discriminatory, or sexual messages as a condition of participation.
  • **Commercial** broadcast messages must be sent to the listserver manager and will be posted by him/her if found acceptable.  Acceptable material must have some connection to West Point.
  • The listserver manager is responsible for maintaining adherence to these rules.  His / Her judgment is final regarding suitability of postings and corrective actions taken. These can range from notice of inappropriate actions to unsubscription from the listserver.
  • Consequences for statements made when using these facilities are the responsibility and liability of the sending member.
  • Messages which can be perceived **by the recipient** as personal attacks should not be broadcast. Remember that members from other parts of the country may not have the same views as are prevelant in your local area.
  • Broadcast message material should be suitable for receipt by almost 1,000 members.  Personal E-Mail is best directed to individual addresses.
  • Anyone unwilling to abide by these rules should unsubscribe from the listserver.

John Tonra Finishes Maui Marathon

{mosimage}John Tonra sends in that he completed his 2nd Maui Marathon.  He says, "I did better this time – 4 minutes off my previous time, and was able to run the whole way.  Plus I beat Oprah again.  One day I hope to beat P. Diddy!"  He also sent in a picture of him crossing the finish line, using some of the locals as "motivation".  I hope his wife, Ta, doesn’t hear about this!

Where are classmate’s pages and contact information?

{mosimage}With this new arrangement of the class web page, where do I find the old information?  Where are our classmates’ pages, pictures, and contact information?

We’ll be importing the information from the old class web page into the new one over the next few weeks (Oct.-Nov. 2005).  In the meantime, here are some links to old information that is still available (we’ve added some of these as menu links on the main web page too):

  • Classmate’s web pages:  If a classmate has taken advantage of the free personal web space provided by WP-ORG, then you can find a link to that web page from http://www.west-point.org/users/usma1989/.
  • Send e-mail to a classmate:  If a classmate is one of the 700+ that we have an address for on the class e-mail list, you can forward a message to them from the E-mail Classmates menu item.
  • Personal updates:  The personal updates from the old web page will be inserted into the Web Forum on this site as soon as possible.
  • Pictures:  The old gallery is gone, but the pictures were saved.  We’ll put up a new gallery as soon as possible and attempt to re-insert the photos into that gallery.

Thanks for your patience during this transition.

Dale Henderson Earns Ph.D.

LTC Dale Henderson successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Arizona in Systems & Industrial Engineering. His research is in the field of nonlinear optimization, titled Heuristic and Exact Techniques for Solving a Temperature Estimation Model.  Congratulations, Dr. Henderson!

Dale is now assigned to the Department of Systems Engineering at USMA.

I recently asked him about his studies and his current job and he responded with the following.  Dale writes:  I love teaching at USMA. It is the best job in the Army (for me). I teach non-majors a soft course, so it is really different than my research areas, and these cadets are very different from what I was like – they are forced to take an engineering sequence. It is very hard work. I’m not sure it is anything like being on the faculty of a civilian university. We work harder at teaching and we do less research.

On civilian graduate studies:
I probably have a unique perspective on the process. I went to military school twice before I went for the PhD, and in the military schools your path is laid out pretty clearly. When you go for a PhD at a civilian school there are a sequence of steps, and requirements, but the path you follow is very much up to you and your advisor. It is extremely hard to –finish-. The academic world is far different than the military (or business I imagine) world. People take a long time to do things. On the other hand, there really is nothing like having several years to really do nothing but think about a particular problem and a narrow field of study.

Research interests:  I am interested in applied optimization. Especially in looking at optimization problems that people have formulated and can’t solve (due to complexity issues) and helping to reformulate or apply some different approach to them to make them solvable.

Army Shuts out Akron 20-0!

Army 20, Akron 0:  Carlton Jones ran for 162 yards to pass Heisman winner Glenn Davis on Army’s career rushing list and the Black Knights snapped an 11-game losing streak with a 20-0 victory over Akron on Saturday night.  The Black Knights notched their first shutout in 142 games, the last coming when they beat Colgate 30-0 on Sept. 11, 1993.
