OCTOBER 2000:

  • FINAL REUNION MEETING!  The reunion committee met for a final planning meeting on 10 October.  Four classmates were present.

  • Final Mailing - the final mailing should be in your hands by now.

  • Registration Update.  We have 394 classmates that have paid the registration fee and paid for events such as meals (see Registered Classmates List link above).  Another 19 classmates have paid only the registration fee.  Click here to see if you are one of the 19 that might not be eating with us . . .  If so, get your event and bus registrations in to Joan Emmer ASAP! (see Event Sign Up link above).

  • Event Registration Status (as of 10 October):
         Thursday Evening Reception - 239
         Friday Breakfast - 148
         Friday Lunch - 472
         Friday Dinner Dance - 597
    (CLOSED)
         Saturday Breakfast - 255
         Saturday Pre-game Meal - 733
Saturday Post Game Party - 758
Saturday Alumni Dinner Dance - 514
         Sunday Brunch - 215

  • Cancellation Policy - Refund of registration fee is no longer possible.

  • Class Photo - Academy Photo will be in the lobby of the Woodcliff Lakes Hilton on Sunday morning to take orders for the class photo and candid photos taken throughout the reunion.  If you are not staying at the hotel, you can contact Academy Photo at (845) 938-3448 or Building 720, West Point, NY 10996.

  • Parking at West Point - AOG provides each returning Alumni a "parking pass".  This pass is hardly worth the paper it is printed on and basically means that you are a returning graduate.  Virtually the entire Central Post area requires a Central Post Area parking permit except for a handful of 2 hour visitor spaces near the West Point Club (street and Thayer Roof).  ODIA issues passes to park in lots all over post for Saturday.  The best bet if you are staying in the NJ hotels is to take the buses you paid for.  Contact Joanie ASAP if you need to adjust your headcounts.

  • Hotel Thayer-Woodcliff Lakes Hilton Shuttle - A reminder . . . we added a shuttle bus to take classmates and guests staying at the Hotel Thayer (or West Point and vicinity) to the Woodcliff Lakes Hilton for the Thursday and Friday night events.  The bus will depart from the Hotel Thayer at 6 pm each night.  The cost is covered in the original registration fee.  This service is limited to the first 49 who sign up!

  • Cadet Store and USMA Bookstore - Tommy Endres (Tommy heads up the Directorate of Cadet Activities) invites you to shop in the Cadet Store and USMA Bookstore.  They will be open Wednesday through Friday, 0800-1600, for your shopping.  The Cadet Store is now located in the Old Hospital and is more upscale than in our day.  The USMA Bookstore located on the 4th floor of Thayer Hall.

  • Golf Pairings.  Golf pairings are shown in a MS Excel spreadsheet (contact Bob Morris at essayon58@aol.com  if you cannot open an Excel format spreadsheet). We remind you that breakfast (Continental) will be set up at 7:30 a.m. (that's 0730!) and you must be on your designated hole (your group #) by 8:50 a.m. for a 9:00 start.

  • A few more reminders . . .

    • Saturday Attire - We encourage everyone to "dress for the entire day", i.e., wear the same clothes to the parade, lunch, football game, post game party and Alumni Dinner Party in the Cadet Mess (a.k.a. Dinner Dance).  We have coordinated for access to rooms in Arvin Gym, Cullum Hall and Eisenhower Hall to freshen up and/or change clothes.  We do not have any place to store clothes during the day!!!  If you bring a change of clothes, plan on carrying it all day . . .

    • Parade Decorum - One of the late 1980's classes failed to exhibit proper decorum during the Alumni Review several years ago.  The Supe will stop the review in progress if we do not show the prpoer decorum during the Review.  We have plenty of time to visit during the weekend, please show respect to the cadets on line as they honor us, the Alumni.

SEPTEMBER 2000:

  • GOLF UPDATE! Only soft spike golf shoes allowed. Lunch will be from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. (sandwich buffet). If your spouse/other would like to join you for breakfast or lunch please notify Kathi Snook (kathleen-snook@usma.edu or 845-938-4544 with the number for each meal) not later than October 13th. Cost for breakfast is $6.00 and for lunch is $8.00 and is payable when you sign in that morning. Hit 'em straight!

  • The reunion committee met on 20 September.  Nine classmates were present including Debbie Lewis, visiting USMA with the Vulnerability Assessment Team from the Joint Staff.

  • Final Mailing - the final mailing should be going out to those that have registered in the next week.  Keep an eye out for it!

  • Registration.  We have 339 classmates that have paid the registration fee and paid for events such as meals (see Registered Classmates List link above).  Another 61 classmates have paid only the registration fee.  Are you folks planning on attending any of the meals with the class?  If so, get your event and bus registrations in to Joan Emmer ASAP! (see Event Sign Up link above).

  • Event Registration Status (as of 20 September):
         Thursday Evening Reception - 224
         Friday Breakfast - 147

  • Hotel Thayer-Woodcliff Lakes Hilton Shuttle - We added a shuttle bus to take classmates and guests staying at the Hotel Thayer (or West Point and vicinity) to the Woodcliff Lakes Hilton for the Thursday and Friday night events.  The bus will depart from the Hotel Thayer at 6 pm each night.  The cost is covered in the original registration fee.  This service is limited to the first 49 who sign up!

  • Cadet Store and USMA Bookstore - We are permitted to shop in the Cadet Store and USMA Bookstore.  They will be open Wednesday through Friday, 0800-1600, for your shopping.  The Cadet Store is now located in the Old Hospital and is more upscale than in our day.  The USMA Bookstore located on the 4th floor of Thayer Hall.

  • Lost Football Tickets - contact the AAA for issue of duplicate tickets.

  • Classroom Visits - Kathi Snook has this under control.  We will be able to visit Math, History and BS&L classes on Friday morning.  Persons desiring to participate must sign up for the early buses to West Point on Friday morning!  Family members and guests are permitted to participate in this event.

If you bring a change of clothes, plan on carrying it all day . . .

  • Cavalry Hall Update - Debbie Lewis updated the group on her efforts to build a new multipurpose facility near the current Morgan Farm stables to house equestrian activities as well as other events such as indoor soccer, craft fairs, etc.  Debbie has the Supe's approval and now has a site.  She is looking to involve cadets in the site analysis and early design concepts (opportunity for multidisciplinary capstone design projects).  The new site will be more accessible to Highway 9W.

  • Next Meeting - The final  Reunion Committee planning meeting will be held on Tuesday, 10 October.

AUGUST 2000:

  • The reunion committee did not meet on 29 August as planned.  The next meeting should be soon after Labor Day Weekend.

  • Golf.  The golf tourney is full.  Joanie is taking names of others that are still interested in playing in case of cancellations or if alternate arrangements are made to accommodate over flow.

  • Friday Dinner Dance.  The dinner dance is up to 446 paid attendees.  The maximum the facility can hold is 600.

  • Hotel.  The Hilton is booked but the Holiday Inn still has some rooms.

  • Added Bus Service.  We have contracted for a bus to provide round trip transportation from the Hotel Thayer to the Woodcliff Lake Hilton on Thursday and Friday nights for folks staying at the Thayer.  More details to follow . . .

  • Final Mailing.  The final mailing will go out in late September to those that have paid the registration fee and/or signed up for other events.  This will be your check of what Joanie has recorded for you and a reminder to sign up for any other events you desire to attend.

  • Event Sign Up.  If you missed the 15 August deadline for event sign up, send your registration/event sign up in.  We still have some space and would love to have you join us for what promises to be a great weekend!

  • Class Memorabilia.  You will get a tote bag, ball cap, lapel pin and stick pin at the registration desk.  Visit the Everywear web site to order some other nifty class memorabilia!

JULY 2000:

  • The reunion committee met on 19 June and 18 July.  Seven/eight classmates were present along with Joanie Emmer (our coordinator).

  • Registration Update.  As of the meeting, 300 classmates had registered to attend, 15 others responded but will be unable to attend.

  • Hotel Update.  The Woodcliff Lakes Hilton is sold out.  They are taking names for a waiting list.  Call the hotel directly at (201) 391-3600 and ask for in-house reservations.  We still have about 80 rooms available at the Montvale Holiday Inn.

  • Second Reunion Mailing.  The second reunion mailing was mailed during the first week of  July.  It includes an informational letter, application to register reunion meals,  order form for class memorabilia, information on the golf tourney, order form for football game tickets, and lists of classmates attending and lost classmates.  If you do not receive the mailing, contact Joanie Emmer to get one or download the forms from this site.   Don't let the order forms sit around - the deadlines for our forms and the Army Athletic Association (for ordering tickets for the class area) is 15 August!  The final reunion mailing will go out in early September.

  • Football Game.  The start time of the football game was moved to 12 noon to accommodate the Fox Sports telecast.  This has a ripple effect on all activities scheduled prior to the game - bus schedules, Alumni Exercises, Parade, lunch in the Cadet Mess, etc.

  • Buses.  Use the buses to go to/from West Point!!!  Parking is a nightmare with all of the on-going construction (you'll be surprised if you haven't been to West Point in a few years).  We have a bus returning to the hotel following our victory party in Eisenhower Hall and buses will return from the Alumni Dinner Dance as they are filled.  There will be no buses going to the hotel immediately after the football game and then returning for the Alumni Dinner Dance.  The attire for the Alumni Dinner Dance is "as for football game".  Please indicate your use of the buses on the Event Sign Up Form so we can contract for the appropriate number of buses for each movement - you've paid for the bus transportation with the registration fee!

  • Class Dinner/Dance.  Another reminder - the Friday night dinner dance at the Woodcliff Lake Hilton promises to be a sell out.  The ballroom will hold 600 maximum.  If you do the math, we are up to a potential 550+ attendees now.

  • Surprise Reunion Meeting Attendee.  Scott Snook brought a surprise participant for the meeting - Dana (Maller) Rocque.  All decisions made at the June meeting are now blamed on Dana!

  • The next reunion planning meeting is 29 August 2000.

MAY 2000:

  • The reunion committee met on 9 May.  Six classmates were present along with Joanie Emmer (our coordinator).

  • Registration Update.  As of the meeting, 227 classmates had registered to attend, 14 others responded but will be unable to attend.

  • Hotel Rooms.  The Woodcliff Lake Hilton rooms have been blocked for our reunion and will remain blocked until sold out or 30 days prior to the reunion, whichever comes first.  Our last count shows just 20-25 rooms remain at the Hilton.  We have also reserved 40 rooms at the Holiday Inn Montvale for overflow.  They are located along our bus transportation route just 1.5 miles from the Hilton and their rate is $99 per night.  Make your individual reservation soonest to ensure you are accommodated as you desire!

  • Golf.  The golf tourney can accommodate 72 players.  Current registration indicates 60 desiring to play golf.  Registration for golf will be on a first paid, first play basis . . . 21 have paid so far.  Please get your money to Joanie Emmer as soon as possible.

  • Next Reunion Mailing.  The second reunion mailing is planned for late June.  It will be packed.  Besides an informational letter, it will contain an application to register (i.e., buy tickets) for reunion meals (approximate prices per person are indicated in the activity list below), indicate bus ridership, brochure and order form for class memorabilia, additional information on the golf tourney, order form for football game tickets, and a list of classmates attending.  Expect to be writing your checks to pay for activity participation in June or July!.  Look for the mailing o/a 1 July . . .  Don't let the order forms sit around - for example, the Army Athletic Association deadline for ordering tickets for the class area is 15 August.

  • Class Dinner/Dance.  A reminder - the Friday night dinner dance at the Woodcliff Lake Hilton promises to be a sell out.  The ballroom will hold 600 maximum.  If you do the math, we are up to a potential 450+ attendees now.

  • Army Football Season Ticket Holders.  If you are a regular Army football season ticket holder, you can exchange your season ticket for a seat with the class during the reunion through Joanie Emmer.  We'll provide more information concerning in the June mailing.  When you exchange your tickets, recognize that the seats will probably not be as good as the season ticket holders.

  • 20 Years of Women Graduates.  In addition to the previously announced panel discussion on Wednesday, 18 October open to all, the Academy leadership is exploring other options such as a tie in with the Margaret Corbin Seminar or dinner.  Information and invitations will come from the Academy though we will try to keep the latest on this site as well.  Remember that these activities, whatever may evolve, are not a part of our reunion weekend activities.

  • Airline Tickets.  We are exploring options to get the best possible airfares (if there is such a thing).  WorldTek (see below) can get meeting rates and we are working with Continental Airlines (and others) to

  • The next reunion planning meeting is 19 June 2000.

APRIL 2000:

  • The reunion committee met on 11 April.  Six classmates were present along with Joanie Emmer (our coordinator).

  • Registration Fee Adjustment - Married classmates will pay a registration fee of $150 for the first member attending and $100 for the second classmate attending.  This removes the "double jeopardy" on the bus fees.  Any couple already paying the $150 fee twice will receive credit towards tickets to reunion events or class memorabilia.

  • Registration Update.  As of the meeting, 176 classmates had registered to attend, 14 responded but will be unable to attend.

  • Class Memorabilia.  The committee selected a variety of class memorabilia that will be available to purchase using the order form to be included in the late May/early June mailing, by going to the Everwear web page or by ordering at the reunion.  Items ordered in advance will be shipped to your home or delivered to you at the reunion registration.  More information along with the description of items will be available soon.

  • Golf.  The golf tourney can accommodate 72 players.  Current registration indicates 53 desiring to play golf.  Registration for golf will be on a first paid, first play basis . . .  A golf tourney enclosure will be sent to all classmates registering/paying for golf in the next reunion mailing.  That will be the time to provide input for your foursome if not provided already.

  • Class Dinner/Dance.  The Friday night dinner dance at the Woodcliff Lake Hilton promises to be a sell out.  The ballroom will hold 600 maximum.  If you do the math, we are up to a potential 350+ attendees now.  Tickets to the dinner/dance can be ordered in the next reunion mailing and tickets will be offered first paid, first served.  Classmates not accommodated for dinner will still be able to join the others to dance or socialize after the dinner portion is completed.

  • Hotel Rooms.  The Woodcliff Lake Hilton rooms have been blocked for our reunion and will remain blocked until sold out or 30 days prior to the reunion, whichever comes first.  Make your individual reservation soonest to ensure you are accommodated as you desire!

  • Army Football Season Ticket Holders.  If you are a regular Army football season ticket holder, you can exchange your season ticket for a seat with the class during the reunion through Joanie Emmer.  We'll provide more information concerning the procedures later.  When you exchange your tickets, recognize that the seats will probably not be as good as the season ticket holders.

  • The next reunion planning meeting is 9 May 2000.

MARCH 2000:

  • The reunion committee met on 14 March.  Nine classmates were present along with Joanie Emmer (our coordinator) and Natalie Hogan of Everywear (source of memorabilia).  Keep checking here for updated reunion details from the meeting.  As of the meeting, 66 classmates had already registered (in one week!).

  • The 20 Years of Women Graduates event is not a part of our reunion activities.  Donna Alesch Newell is on the USMA task force working on events to commemorate 20 years of gender mixed classes.  Check out the  information paper she prepared for the class (with official sanction from the task force).

  • Next Mailing.  The next mailing to the class will be in the late May/early June timeframe.  Included in it will be forms to sign up (and pay) for the actual reunion meal events, an application for football tickets, and a flier with items of memorabilia that can be ordered and delivered to you at home or at the reunion.

  • Class Gift.  In the August timeframe, you should receive a ballot to vote on a class gift(s).  The results of the vote will be announced at the class meeting during the reunion.  We will also kick off the five year fund raising campaign to pay for the gift(s).

  • The $150 registration fee covers expenses such as our reunion coordinator, mailings, bus transportation, deposits on facilities, the post-game Victory Party at Eisenhower Hall, selected Class of 1980 memorabilia, et cetera.

    GENERAL INFORMATION

Everyone needs to get into the execute mode for the reunion planning.  The second mailing is out (I received my slow mail copy on 13 July) and it is time to select your events to attend, settle on bus arrangements, make hotel reservations, order football game tickets and class memorabilia, and write those checks!

Everyone with "good" addresses on file at the AOG should have received a mailing by 15 July 2000 providing the final information and registration/order forms for the reunion.  Most of you will not receive another mailing.  The latest updates on reunion information will be provided using the class listserver and this website.

If you do not receive mailings with reunion information, you are probably a "lost  classmate" and you need to update your address with Ms. Tammy Flint, telephone (914) 446-1642 or email yt1806@exmail.usma.edu.

    REGISTRATION

No changes to this section.  The cost to register is $150 per class member (this fee is waived for class widows attending; married classmates pay $100 for the second classmate attending).  The registration fee will cover administrative costs (informational mailings, reunion coordinator, nametags, selected memorabilia and events, bus transportation) with any excess going into the AOG Class of 1980 gift account.  Full refunds will be available until 1 July 2000 for those that may have to cancel.

All registration will be handled by mail.  The registration form may be downloaded from this site.  Completed forms and checks should be mailed to our Reunion Coordinator, Ms. Joan Emmer at:

    Class of 1980 Reunion
    c/o Ms. Joan Emmer
    Post Office Box 23
    West Point, NY 10996

She can also be reached at wplaxmom@aol.com, telephone (914) 446-4037, or fax (914) 446-6645.

    PAYMENT

Checks to pay your registration and event fees should be made out to "USMA Class of 80 Reunion" and mailed to our Reunion Coordinator - Joan Emmer - at the address provided above.  We (the Reunion Committee, Joanie and the AOG) do not have the capability to handle credit card transactions.

    HOTEL

The Hilton Woodcliff Lake was selected for our reunion.  We have a special room rate of $95 per night (plus tax) for single or double occupancy.  The hotel is located 37 miles from the Central Post Area of West Point (just off the Garden State Parkway at the Schoolhouse Road exit.  The promotional brochure describes the hotel as "elegant country-like decor on 21 acres of gently rolling hills and delightful fruit orchards."

You must make your own room reservations!!!  We recommend you call to make your room arrangements soonest.  Don't forget to ask for the West Point Class of 1980 rate ($95 plus tax per night).  Our block of rooms will be held until 19 September but we anticipate selling out much sooner.

The hotel's address is 200 Tice Boulevard, Woodcliff Lake, NJ 07675-9998.  The telephone number is (201) 391-3600.  The toll free number for reservations at Hilton Hotels is (800) 445-8667.

Driving directions and an interactive map to the hotel are available online as well.

Sold out?  We also reserved 85 rooms at the Montvale Holiday Inn located 1.5 miles from the Hilton.  Our group rate is  $99 per night and the block will be held until 5 October.  The hotel telephone number is (888) 507-3744 or (201) 391-7700.  They can also be reached by e-mail at HolidayMontvale@aol.com.

Why not stay at the Thayer Hotel?  We expect 400-500 of our classmates to attend this reunion and the Thayer Hotel only has 146 rooms.  Additionally, the Thayer Rooms are very expensive, even considering the New York area - $200 per night plus tax for football weekends.

    TRANSPORTATION AND TRAVEL

Bus transportation will be provided between the Hilton Woodcliff Lake and West Point.  Indicate on your Event Sign Up Form the days you need bus transportation (your registration fee covers the use of the buses) for our planning and scheduling purposes.  We recommend using the buses as parking is extremely tight on football/reunion weekends.  Most of the parking lots require "Central Post Area" parking passes on Thursday and Friday (except Buffalo Soldiers Field).  On Saturday, every lot in the Central Post Area, Buffalo Soldiers Field and the Commissary require a special parking pass.

WORLDTEK TRAVEL is the official AOG travel agency.  They have airline and auto rental discount rates in place for reunion classes.  Call WORLDTEK at (800) 243-1723.  If you desire to make arrangements for the airport-hotel transfers (not a bad idea since your Hilton Woodcliff Lake-West Point bus transportation is included in the registration fee), we suggest calling Empire International at (800) 451-5466 or TBT SERVICE at (800) 654-6642.

    FOOTBALL TICKETS

Army's opponent for the Reunion Weekend is Tulane University.  Game time is 12 noon!  You must individually order your football tickets using our registration form in June or from the Army Athletic Association, telephone (914) 446-4996.  The tickets will be mailed to you approximately two weeks prior to the game.  If this is not suitable because of your travel plans, please notify the AAA Ticket Office and advise them of your need to have the tickets available at Michie Stadium on game day.

    DRESS

Attire for Thursday and Friday is Casual.  The Supper Reception on Thursday is "dressy casual", that is, sport shirts and slacks for men, and slacks or skirts for women.  Friday's Dinner Dance is informal - coat and tie for men.  Good walking shoes are a must for Friday and Saturday while at West Point.  Saturday is informal - the minimum level of attire should be sport coat and dress trousers (no jeans).  We will be participating in a Parade with the Corps of Cadets paying their respects to us -- we should accord them our courtesy by dressing appropriately.  Remember, Saturday dress is for the entire day.  The buses will not return to the Hilton Woodcliff Lake Hotel until after the Post-Game Victory Party at Eisenhower Hall and the AOG Alumni Dinner Dance.  Sunday breakfast buffet is casual.

    MEAL TICKETS

Most of the meal events will require meal tickets for entry.  These tickets may be purchased using the registration form to be mailed in June.  We cannot guarantee accommodation to anyone desiring to attend a meal and desiring to pay at the door.

    GOLF TOURNEY

We are planning a golf tournament for Thursday, 20 October, 0900-1600, at the West Point Golf Course.  Check in and a continental breakfast begins at 0800 and we will have a shotgun start at 0900.  Lunch is provided at the turn and prizes/trophies will be awarded at the end.  We can accommodate between 60 and 120 golfers.  If demand exceeds 120, we will look into neighboring courses.  The all-inclusive fee is $75 per golfer.  The event coordinators are Scott and Kathi Snook.  See information letter included with the second mailing for more information.  Golf Pairings
