Army/Navy Game
Army - Navy Game 2016

Army/Navy 2016 -- Update Number 6
8 December 2016

Only two days to go before the Army football team thrashes Navy at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore and even less time until many of you begin arriving at the Sheraton Baltimore Washington Airport Hotel tomorrow to begin the 2016 Army-Navy weekend and our Class of '65 activities with families and friends!

Schedule for West Point Class of 1965 Activities, 9-11 December:

Friday, 9 December:

3 pm - Class of '65 Hospitality Suite Opens: Two suites facing each other across a hallway will constitute the Class of '65 Hospitality Suite at the Sheraton BWI Airport Hotel. Room numbers for these suites are not yet known. Please ask the Sheraton front desk when you arrive on Friday or Saturday.

Dinner: There is no plan for a Class dinner Friday night -- everyone is on their own. One option is the hotel dining room on the ground floor, open from 4 pm to 11 pm. Room service is available until 10 pm. The Sheraton will provide guests with a list of local restaurants at check-in or you may wish to consult the hotel's web site.

Note: A special poker game, by invitation only, will begin in one of the two suites at approximately 8:30 pm Friday evening, an important Class of '65 tradition on the eve of Army-Navy games over the years! See Barrie Zais if you have any questions about this particular game.

Saturday, 10 December:

6:30-9:30 am - Breakfast Buffet: Complementary breakfast for all of our West Point Class of 1965 group on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

10:00 am - Class of '65 Hospitality Suite Opens: Our Class of '65 Hospitality Suite will remain open from 10 am until shortly before our Class of '65 Dinner begins Saturday evening at 8 pm in Calvert Salon 3/4 on the ground floor. As as past years, some of those who are not going to the game will watch it on TV in the Hospitality Suite. Given the frigid weather forecast for Saturday afternoon, they appear to be the smart ones in our Class of '65 group!

1:15 pm: Buses Arrive for Loading: Two buses from Sunny's Worldwide Chauffeured Transportation are scheduled to arrive in front of the Sheraton Hotel at 1:15 pm; we will begin loading. Please board Bus #1 unless you belong to the groups led by Steve Harman (18 people, all from his family) and Jim Ferguson (10 people). If you are in the groups led by Steve and Jim, please board Bus #2. Loading should be completed by 1:30 pm. (The buses are white and approximately the size of school buses. A sign will be mounted on each bus near the door, indicating Bus #1 or Bus #2, West Point 1965.)

1:30 pm: Class of '65 Buses Depart Hotel for Stadium: Once our "Bus Captains," Steve Harman for Bus #1 and Doug Richardson for Bus #2, have accounted for all of those assigned to their respective buses, we will depart for M&T Bank Stadium. Bus #1, with a maximum capacity of 38 passengers, will have 32 passengers; Bus #2, with a maximum capacity of 30 passengers, will have 28 passengers.

7:30 pm (approximately): Buses Return to Hotel from Game:

8:00 pm: Class of '65 Dinner: As previously announced in my email of December 1st, our Class of 65 dinner will be held in the Calvert Salon 3/4 on the ground floor starting at 8 pm. We may have to adjust the exact time the first course (salad) is served depending on when the buses actually bring us back to the hotel after the game.

At any event, the doors of our private dining room, Calvert Salon 3/4, will open at 8 and the cash bar will be open in the hallway just outside. Russ Campbell, our Class President, will welcome everyone at approximately 8:10 pm followed by an Invocation.

Sunday, 11 December:

6:30-9:30 am - Breakfast Buffet (complementary)

TBD: Farewells, departure for home as we hopefully savor Army's first victory over Navy in football since 2001.

Safe travels, everyone! See you tomorrow, or on Saturday at the latest.

Army/Navy 2016 -- Update Number 5
1 December 2016

To all planning to attend the West Point Class of 1965 dinner at the Sheraton BWI Hotel on Saturday evening, 10 December following the Army Navy game:

By my latest count, about 100 people (classmates and spouses, Class widows, family, and friends of '65) are coming to the Sheraton BWI Airport Hotel next weekend to participate in Class activities during Army-Navy weekend.  This is a great turnout by Strength & Drive, our families and our friends!  Thanks to everyone for sending their reservation forms and checks to me on time.

June and I look forward to seeing all of you very soon, either a week from tomorrow or on Saturday, 10 December, the day we are all going to enjoy an Army victory over Navy at long last!  FYI, June and I will arrive at the hotel on Thursday, 8 December in case anyone else plans to be there a day early or you simply want to know where to find us. My cell number is: 571-212-4514.  I don't yet know our room number or the room numbers of the two suites to be used as our Class of '65 Hospitality Suites.  We may not be able to find out the room numbers of the suites until next Thursday or Friday.  I've been around and around with the hotel on this point, but to no avail.

Because of other commitments, some will come to the hotel on Saturday only to visit with classmates and friends and perhaps ride the bus with us to and from the game at M&T Bank Stadium.  As of this evening, 72 are planning to attend our Class of '65 dinner after the game. The primary purpose of this email is to provide information to those coming to the dinner Saturday night and afford you the opportunity to select one of the two entree options: chicken picatta or flank steak. Details are provided in paragraphs 1-5 below.

If anyone has any special dietary requirements, please let me know so I can discuss with the hotel management on Monday as they prepare to order the food for our dinner.

1.  Dinner - Where and When?  Our Class of '65 dinner following the Army Navy football game will be held in the Calvert Salon 3/4 of the Sheraton BWI Airport Hotel beginning at 8 pm on Saturday, 10 December.

2.  Return from Stadium to Hotel: Unless the game goes into overtime (very unlikely since Army plans to beat Navy in regulation time!), it is expected to end at about 6:30 pm.  Allowing 20 minutes after the referee's final whistle for us to depart M&T Bank Stadium and find our buses (or cars), we are hopeful of returning to the hotel by 7:30 pm, perhaps a bit later depending on traffic, weather, etc.  This should give everyone who attends the game a chance to return to their rooms and freshen up (or warm up) for a few minutes before dinner.

3.  Opening of the Dining Room:  The doors of our private dining room (Calvert Salon 3/4) will be open by 8 pm so we'll be able to begin moving into our dining area, finding tables, etc.  Hopefully, everyone will be seated by about 8:10 pm when our Class President, Russ Campbell, will say a few words of welcome, followed by an invocation.  There will be no buffet line.  Instead, dinner will be served to us at our tables, beginning with the salad, at approximately 8:15 pm.  (This time may slip if we are delayed returning from the game, but the dining room and cash bar will open at 8 pm regardless.)

4.  Cash Bar: The hotel is going to set up a cash bar in the hallway outside Calvert Salon 3/4. This will be a full service bar serving wine, beer, hard liquor, and soft drinks from 8 pm and continuing for two hours if we wish. (We have no requirement to buy a minimum number of drinks.) Some may ask, why do we need a cash bar when we'll have wine, beer, and soft drinks available in our Class Hospitality Suite?  This is a good question, but the answer from the hotel management is short and simple. We are strictly forbidden to bring individual drinks or bottles from our Hospitality Suite or anywhere else to Calvert Salon 3/4 -- doing so will jeopardize the hotel's liquor license.  Enough said.

5.  Dinner Menu:  Our dinner menu includes the following: (1) Salad: Salad Mix with Romaine, Cherry Tomatoes, Red Onions, and Cucumber with a choice of Balsamic Vinaigrette or Ranch Dressing (to be placed on tables, (2) Entree: Choice of either Chicken Picatta served with Wild Rice and Seasonal Vegetable Medley or Balsamic Infused Flank Steak with Wild Rice and Seasonal Vegetable Medley, and (3) Dessert with Coffee or Tea: Carrot Cake or Double Chocolate Cake, Starbucks Regular or Decaf Coffee, TAZO Assorted Tea Selections.

MENU CHOICE -- ENTREE OPTION:  Reference paragraph 5 above: please send me an email NLT Sunday, 4 December with the choice of entree for each person in your group, i.e. either chicken picatta or flank steak.  If I haven't heard from you by Sunday, I'll try to reach you by phone, but on Monday I must give the hotel POC a final count of how many will attend the dinner and how many have opted for each entree.

I will send one more email to everyone in the next few days to provide some final information about the schedule of Class of '65 activities (Hospitality Suites, Bus to and from stadium, and Class Dinner).

Safe travels to Baltimore.

Army/Navy 2016 -- Update Number 4 (Reservation Form)
1 November 2016

Army vs. Air Force on Saturday! After an impressive 21-13 come-from-behind, upset, road victory over Wake Forest last Saturday, Army is now 5-3 on the season while preparing to whip the Air Force Falcons at Michie Stadium on Saturday. A victory over the Zoomies on 5 November at West Point will mean that Army meets Navy in Baltimore on 10 December with a chance to win the 2016 Commander-in-Chief's Trophy outright for the first time in 20 years! GO ARMY! BEAT AIR FORCE!

FYI, here are links to: (1) an article by John Feinstein about Army's outstanding win at Wake Forest last Saturday and (2) a preview of this Saturday's crucial battle with Air Force at West Point, to be telecast on the CBS Sports Network:

Final Reminder - Reservation Forms and Checks re. Class Activities Due by 16 November: Those of you who've told me you're coming to Baltimore for the Army-Navy weekend (9-11 December) and participate in Class of 65 activities at the Sheraton BWI Airport Hotel and/or ride the round trip Class buses to the game are doing very well in getting your Reservation Forms and checks to me on time. For those few who've not yet sent me your completed forms and checks, please get them to me ASAP, but NLT Wed, 16 November. (This is a slight change from my earlier deadline of 18 Nov, but you've still got two weeks.) A copy of the Reservation Form is attached once again.

Who's Planning to Come? My current estimate is that at least 87 classmates, wives, Class widows, family, and friends of '65 are coming to the Sheraton BWI Airport Hotel to participate in Class activities during Army-Navy weekend. The following classmates and Class widows have indicated they're coming. The number in parentheses following each name indicates the total number of Classmates, family member & friends who are coming: Tom Abraham (4). John Bell (4), Russ Campbell (2), Kay Dermody (1), Jim Ferguson (8), Tom Fergusson (11), Bob Frank (2), Clair Gill (2), Steve Harman (21), Bob Harter (2), Ray Hawkins (2), John Howell (2), Dave Hurley (2), Patti Jones (1), Bill Lehman (8), Joann Plotkin (1), Doug Richardson (2), Eileen Rountree (1), Terry Ryan (2), Joe Sanchez (2), George Seaworth (3), Jim Tomaswick (2), and Andy Zaleski (2). I've heard from a few who are not yet sure about coming, so our total number could easily rise above 90, a great turnout by Strength & Drive at Army's most important football game in the last 15 years, a game the Brave Old Army Team must win!

Update Number 5 - Early December: I expect to send my final update, Number 5, to you in early December. At that point, I will be as specific as possible about some things I don't yet know for sure like room numbers for our two Class of 65 hospitality suites at the Sheraton BWI Airport Hotel, the time our buses will load and depart the hotel to take us to M&T Bank Stadium on Saturday, 10 December and the time and exact location in the hotel of our Class of 65 dinner that night. Current plan is for our two buses to be at the hotel, ready to load passengers at 1:30 pm, departing for the stadium ca. 1:40 pm. (Kick-off of the 117th Army-Navy game is scheduled for 3 pm.)

Army/Navy 2016 -- Update Number 3 (Reservation Form)
2 October 2016

Army Football - a Great Start! With the Army football team off to a great start this fall at 3-1, the best start for an Army team since 1996, we have much to look forward to over the months ahead, most of all to getting together at the Sheraton BWI (Baltimore Washington International) Airport Hotel over the weekend of 9-11 December and beating Navy on Saturday, 10 December for the first time since 2001!

Strength & Drive Response So Far: Your response since early August to our plans to gather at the Sheraton BWI Airport Hotel for our 2016 Class of '65 Army-Navy game activities has been outstanding! My current estimate is that at least 77 classmates, wives, widows, family, and friends are coming to the Sheraton Hotel BWI Airport to participate in Class activities there including the Hospitality Suite (9 and 10 Dec), roundtrip bus to and from the game at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, and the Class Dinner Saturday night to celebrate a long overdue Army victory over Navy!

Current Situation on Hotel Rooms at the Sheraton: The number of classmates, families, and friends planning to join us at BWI Airport far exceeds the original estimate John Howell and I came up with for how many rooms might be needed at the hotel, how many would ride the bus, attend the Class dinner, etc. I've asked the Sheraton to increase the number of rooms blocked for us at the group rate ($119 per night plus tax or $134.47 per night total - includes a free breakfast buffet) at least four times. So far, they've been very cooperative, but told me a few days ago that the hotel is nearly sold out for these nights. At the moment, 27 rooms have been reserved by our group for Friday night (9 Dec) and 29 for Saturday night (10 Dec) -- as of Friday, 30 September, only three rooms remain available at the West Point Class of 1965 Group rate.

Who's Planning to Come? The following classmates and class widows have indicated they're coming to Baltimore for the Army-Navy game. The number in parentheses following each name indicates the total number of Classmates, family members, & friends who are coming; Tom Abraham (4), John Bell (4), Russ Campbell (2), Kay Dermody (1), Jim Ferguson (8), Tom Fergusson (10), Bob Frank (2), Clair Gill (2), Steve Harman (21), Bob Harter (2), Ray Hawkins (2), John Howell (2), Dave Hurley (2), Patty Jones (1), Doug Richardson (2), Eileen Rountree (1), Terry Ryan (2), Joe Sanchez (2), George Seaworth (3), Jim Tomaswick (2), and Andy Zaleski (2). Including 8 more "maybes" I've heard from, our Strength & Drive group could easily top 80, especially on 10 December.

Who's Coming I Don't Know About? If you're sure you're going to participate in some or all of the Class activities at the Sheraton BWI Airport Hotel during the weekend of 9-11 December, but your name (and total number of participants) are not on my list, please let me know via phone call or email so my estimate is as accurate as possible.

Reservation Forms and Checks re. Class Activities: As mentioned in my emails via Rick Bunn back in July-August, I'll need your Reservation Forms and checks to cover the costs of Class of '65 activities at the Sheraton BWI Airport Hotel NLT Friday, 18 November. Hotel reservations may be cancelled up until 8 December.

Army/Navy 2016 -- Update Number 2
9 August 2016

Many thanks to Classmates and others who've let me know that you're definitely planning to come to Baltimore for the 2016 Army-Navy game and our 28th Army-Navy Game Get-Together (9-11 December), or are giving it strong consideration.

Your strong, positive response over the past 10 days has given me confidence that we'll have no problem meeting our "guest room revenue commitment" to the Sheraton Baltimore Washington Airport Hotel, as stated in the contract! Because our contract for a block of rooms (including our Class of '65 Hospitality Suite - two rooms) with the Sheraton is now in place, those who want to start making room reservations may do so immediately instead of having to wait until Thursday, 1 September the date announced in an earlier email.

How to Make Room Reservations: When you're ready to make room reservations at the Group Rate for the West Point Class of 1965 at the Sheraton Baltimore Washington Airport Hotel, you can choose one of two options: (1) Go to the Special Website established by the Sheraton for the West Point Class of 1965 group or (2) Call Reservations - you may call the hotel (443-577-2100 or 2300) and ask for the Reservations Desk or call the Sheraton Reservations Center (888-627-8881) -- please be sure to identify yourself as part of the West Point Class of 1965 group.

Group Rate for the West Point Class of 1965 Group? Group rate of $119 per night per room plus tax (13%) for the rooms blocked for the West Point Class of 1965 group. Including tax, our rooms will cost $134.47 per night or $268.94 for two nights. Reminder: our group rate also includes a free breakfast buffet - the hotel normally charges $14.95 per person for the breakfast buffet. Also, when reserving your room, you can select either a king bed or two double beds.

FYI, I had no difficulty this afternoon in making reservations for two rooms for two nights at the group rate by calling the Sheraton BWI Airport Hotel. No one was immediately available at their Reservations Desk, so they connected me to the Sheraton Reservations Center in Ontario, Canada. Once I told the agent the dates of our visit (9-11 Dec 16) and mentioned the West Point Class of 1965 group, she was able to give me the group rate described above. I was also able to go online and bring up the special website where I could also have made my reservations.

Army/Navy 2016 -- Update Number 1
7 August 2016

Last weekend, you received a lot of information from me about the 2016 Army-Navy football game at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on Saturday, 10 December and our plans for Class activities at the Sheraton BWI Airport Hotel from 9-11 December, including our hospitality suite there, group rate for rooms, round-trip bus ride to the game, post-game dinner on 10 December, etc.

For those who've already decided to go to the game and/or participate in some or all of the Class activities or may be thinking about it (unless you've already spoken with me, I would appreciate an email or phone call letting me know what you've decided to do or are thinking about doing re. the Army-Navy game. This will be very helpful as I finalize the contract with the Sheraton BWI Airport Hotel, but it does not obligate you in the least.

You'll need to make your hotel reservations and send me your reservation form with a check in the future; the only urgent matter this week is ordering your tickets to the game. The deadline for the purchase of tickets by Army A-Club members who want to sit with the Class at M&T Bank Stadium is rapidly approaching. I want to remind A-Club members who may be planning to get tickets for the game that you need to do so NLT Monday, 15 August -- this is only one week from tomorrow.

As mentioned last week, I recommend that you purchase your tickets by COB Friday, 12 August to avoid the last minute rush on Monday the 15th. For those who may have missed it in the email I sent you via Rick on Saturday, 30 July, here are the details on how to get your Army-Navy game tickets:

Tickets for Army A-Club Members: The following information is based on a conversation I had with Ed Dillon of the Army Football Ticket Office on 28 July 16:

  • All Club-level seats for the 2016 Army-Navy football game at M&T Bank Stadium on 10 December have already been sold.
  • All other tickets available through either the Army Football Ticket Office or the Army A-Club are priced at $88 per ticket. Expect a handling charge of $5 for the tickets you order – not $5 per ticket, but $5 for all of your tickets to the A-N game.
  • To purchase tickets for the Army-Navy game and sit with the Class of ’65 at M&T Bank Stadium, you must be a member of the Army A-Club and have made a 2016 contribution of at least $100.
  • Although the official cutoff date for the purchase of A-N tickets to sit with the Class has already passed, we should have no difficulty getting tickets to sit with Strength & Drive up until mid-August (Mon, 15 Aug) – after that, it is likely to be tough sledding. I recommend that, if possible, Army A-Club members purchase your tickets NLT Fri, 12 Aug, only two weeks away, in order to avoid the inevitable last minute rush on Monday, 15 August.
  • With a contribution of at least $100 to the Army A Club, you’ll be able to purchase up to four (4) tickets to the A-N game; a $150 contribution will enable you to purchase up to six (6) tickets; and a contribution of $375 or more will enable you to purchase up to ten (10) tickets.
  • You may make your contribution to the Army A Club and purchase you’re A-N tickets via a single phone call by calling either the Army Football Ticket Office at 1-877-TIX-ARMY (849-2769) or the Army A-Club at 845-938-2322. Ed Dillon advises that it will probably be easier to accomplish this by calling the Army Football Ticket Office rather than the A Club (more agents available), but either way will work.
  • Bottom line: Army A-Club members who want to sit with the Class of ’65 at the game should order their tickets NLT Mon, 15 Aug.

Tickets for Non Army A-Club Members: If you do not wish to join the Army A-Club, you may purchase Army-Navy game tickets by calling the Army Football Ticket Office (1-877-849-2769). You will pay the same price ($88 per ticket plus a single $5 handling charge for all tickets), but your seats will probably be in the general seating area instead of with the Class of 65. The game is expected to be a sellout, but there's no way to know when no more tickets to the 2016 Army Navy game will be available for purchase from the Army Ticket Office or the Army A-Club.

Army/Navy 2016 -- Planning Information
30 July 2016

This year's Army/Navy game is on December 10 starting at 3:00 PM at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD.

Tom Fergusson is doing an outstanding job of coordinating, planning, and keeping us informed regarding the activities planned before, during and after the Army/Navy Game. Here is his latest update to help you make your plans.

Many thanks to Classmates and others who've let me know that you're definitely planning to come to Baltimore for the 2016 Army-Navy game and our 28th Army-Navy Game Get-Together (9-11 December), or are giving it strong consideration.
