Matt Raskie:
The best thing for Matt this year is not being a Plebe!  Yuk year is a rite of passage, and all will be glad when it's over.  Matt plans to major in Physics, so he's got his work cut out for him.  In October, he decided to take things into his own hands, and did his first sky-diving jump, on his own.  Now he's ready for anything!  While at West Point, he often sends e-mails to his 84 year old grandfather, which makes Grandpa very proud!  The holidays will be even more special for all of our cadets this year. Matt is looking forward to Thanksgiving, and is already planning what he wants to eat.  It will be great to have him home.

Jacquelyn Wein:  Jacquie recently declared her major of Cultural Psychology with an emphasis in German.  She is finding this year to be better than her Plebe year, as I'm sure all Yuk's do!  Besides the rigors of the classroom and military training and duties, Jacquie is a member of the West Point Marial Arts team. She traveled to Colorado Springs with the team on November 2nd to compete in a tournament against the Air Force Academy on the 3rd.  I was fortunate enough to be able to join her there and was elated to see her win her fight and to see the team win overall over the Air Force team.  Given our recent move to Florida, she's eager to come see her new home….a little curious as to how she'll spend her time though!

CLASS OF 2005

Charn McAlister:  Charn continues to do well.  Plebe Parent Weekend was just a wonderful time.  Charn was a sergeant for the weekend, which made his parents happy and his responsibilities were light, which made Charn happy.  His main goal appears to be getting away on the weekends from West Point no matter what the circumstance.  Recently he joined the Judo team and found himself at the Wooster Invitational in Connecticut a couple of weekends ago.  He returned to West Point with a broken toe, sprained knee, a good lump on the head, and 3rd place in the middleweight, novice belt.  Charn says it was worth it to get away for a day.  His family is not so sure.  He will be getting away again on Veteran's Day weekend but for something less painful like seeing a play in the city. The big getaway, Thanksgiving, is just around the corner and family and friends can't wait for him to return home.

GO ARMY, SINK NAVY

Tania Miani:  After a little rough start, Tania has gotten into the system.  She is doing well academically and enjoying first year.  She looks great.  She was able to be here to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary.  It was wonderful to have all of our children and grandchildren present.  We expect to see her at Thanksgiving.  Her parents and an aunt were able to attend parents weekend; we were not able to go.  We are planning to attend the dinner/ball in December in Orlando.

Tye Reedy:  Tye recently underwent shoulder surgery as a result of a dislocation which occurred during wrestling practice.  As a result, Tye will have to sit out this wrestling season as he undergoes the rehabilitation process.  Academically he has been suffering along just fine! (semi pun intended). The Thayer method, AI and CEP have helped him refine his study and time management skill for the better.  Prior to the surgery his grades were doing well, but now he has a week of missed classes and work to make-up.  With faith, focus, determination, and hard work, which have always been his strengths, he will overcome this physical and academic setback.  Many, if not all, West Point parents have wondered what impact the September 11th attacks have had on their child and their decision to pursue a West Point Education and the military commitment that follows.  Tye recently informed us that the September 11th attacks only served to solidify his desire to become a West Point graduate and serve his country.

Greg Van Bemden
:  Greg is doing well academically especially in computer sciences, though chemistry is giving him fits. This period is boxing for him; he really likes it and has shown great aptitude for it, so much so that they have had to move him into a higher weight class. He really enjoyed playing intramural basketball for his company but the season went too quickly.  We look forward to seeing him at home for Thanksgiving and Christmas; the whole family will be here as well as his girlfriend.
