CLASS OF 2005

“KEEPING FREEDOM ALIVE”

Nathan Brown:  Nathan Brown had a very positive first semester at West Point.  He achieved 3.28 GPA and Dean’s List recognition.  Unfortunately, his C in Gymnastics (or as Rich Nugent informed me: Spaznastics) probably kept him from getting the Superintendent’s Wreath.  He was able to select his two roommates for this semester so he’s really happy about that.  He’s participating in intramural Rugby this semester.  We’re looking forward to our annual family ski trip to Colorado over Spring Break.

Tania Miami: Tania is doing well, she aced history so has advanced to sophomore geometry, doing fine with that.  She did certify for skiing and has a couple of kids she is teaching to ski and enjoying that.

Tye Reedy:  Tye had an academically successful Plebe first semester.  Tye reports that being one of three cadets in a two-person room first semester was a very unique experience.  He is finding his living quarters to be much more relaxed this semester having to share his room with just one other cadet.  For example, he told us it was much easier to prepare for a SAMI with just two cadets than it is with three.  Rehabilitation, since Tye’s shoulder surgery at the end of October, has been slow, but progressive.  The doctor has some concerns about some of his nerve responses, but is hopeful everything will be fine.  We are hoping and praying for his successful recovery and a return to full physical activity and the Army Wrestling Team.

Greg Van Bemden: Greg is doing well and we had a great visit over the holidays. Greg and his first semester roommate went to New York City the weekend before Christmas leave.  It was the first time he had ever been there, they saw the Rockettes Christmas show and had a great time. He made the Dean’s list and received soldier of the quarter for his company.

Gary Whidden:  Gary was home for the Christmas break.  He said it was nice to kick back and lose his “military bearing”.  He is adjusting well to the environment at West Point which also includes getting used to snow which is hard for a sixth generation “Florida Cracker.”  Gary ended his first semester at West Point on a very positive note academically.  He also earned his letter in football and proudly wears it on his jacket.  For the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, he and several cadets ventured into the big city of New York to savor all the sights and sounds of the “Big Apple.”

Bill Buchanan:  Bill has been too busy to give an update – But the editor received information from another cadet that Bill got an award at the regimental formation for heroism.  He pulled two girls from a rolled over vehicle and saved their lives, while he was home at Christmas.  We will all have to wait until he comes home to get more information, congratulations, Bill.
