2004 (Continued)
Micah
Green: It was great to
have Micah home for Christmas to make the rounds of relatives.
I think he was ready to go back to start military intercession.
We got his grades and a news release last week telling us that
Micah had made the Dean’s list. This
was the first time he had made it but he intends to do it again this
semester. He thinks the statics and dynamics class is great fun.
He cannot understand why that is the class that made me change
majors from engineering to English many years ago when I was in college.
He has chosen Mechanical Engineering for a major.
He has been assigned to go to Fort Campbell in Kentucky (near where
we are from) this summer for CTLT with engineers.
He can’t wait. After
that he will go to Buckner to be cadre for the second half.
So, I guess we won’t see much of him this summer but we are glad
he is so excited. We are also
very proud of him as he was selected as soldier of the quarter for his
platoon.
Aaron
Poe: Aaron had some
struggles with his TEEs this year but managed to pass everything despite a
death in the family and the resulting extended stay at home prior to
Thanksgiving. Can’t say enough about the assistance and support offered
him by the Corp, his TAC, the Chaplain and his professors. This semester has him quite happy with instructors and
courses. Adding to his
happiness was the fantastic Yearling Winter Weekend.
A friend from school and her mother traveled to WP to join in the
festivities and reports were glowing from all.
Aaron surprised them with a trip to the Big Apple of Friday evening
to see the Phantom of the Opera.
They had hoped to see snow, which would have been a first for the
young lady, but Mother Nature didn’t oblige.
He’s eagerly looking forward to bringing home a classmate for
Spring break.
Matt Raskie: Matt invited us (Marty and Sue) to attend Yearling Winter Weekend and we had a Great Time! Matt, his date, Marty and I enjoyed the dinner, the reception line, and the dance. There was a sad note, however, for those of you who didn’t know, one member of the Yearling
Class,
Anthony Miller, died at West Point the day before the dinner (there is a
brief article on the website). I
was a moving site to see the Cadets stand as they recognized that they had
known him or had been associated with him in many ways.
It made all of us realize how much impact we all have on the people
around us, and how dependent the Cadets are on each other.
Matt
has a lot of classes this semester because he is planning to double major
in Physics and French. He’s a very serious student, and has been chosen to spend
the first semester of his Cow year at the Military Academy in France.
He’s really looking forward to that!
There
wasn’t much snow at West Point when we were there, but Matt did manage
to go snowboarding for the first time.
We also got to see Whitney Hall while we were there, and we
appreciated her visit to Matt’s room before dinner.
Of course we had to eat at Schades while we were there, and
Matt’s brother Jed joined us, so we had a great visit.
We’re already planning when we can go again, and we’re
beginning to realize how fast 4 years will pass (for us, not for the
Cadets!)
Mark
Swanson:
Mark was able to choose a roommate this semester for the first
time, and now rooms with a good friend.
He and his roommate were joined by Mark’s Florida girlfriend and
her New York cousin for the Yearling Winter Weekend.
They went to see Les Miserables on Broadway and enjoyed the dance
at West Point. Academics are
going well and he continued on the Dean’s list (much to his surprise).
Mark was selected Command Sergeant Major of the Close Combat Team
(paintball). The West Point
Team and intercollegiate competition was featured in two national
paintball magazines the Jan/Feb 02. We
couldn’t believe they have national paintball magazines, but seeing is
believing!
