  • Hal Winton’s New Book

For those who haven't had the pleasure yet, I highly recommend Hal Winton's book, Corps Commanders at the Buldge. It was my beach book this year. It is excellent, and gives the story a whole new perspective. It is very well written and was hard to put down. I recommend it, especially if you have a copy of the West Point Atlas of American Wars handy for the maps.

    Roy Shoemaker

     Dear Classmates,

For those with a bent toward military history, the University Press of Kansas has just released a book I have been at work on for a good while.  The title is Corps Commanders of the Bulge: Six American Generals and Victory in the Ardennes.  Fundamentally, it tells the story of the Battle of the Bulge from the corps perspective, which, believe it or not, has not until now been done.  There are also a few other twists in the book that expand it beyond the corps story.  The 6 commanders in question are Leonard T. Gerow, Troy H. Middleton, Matthew B. Ridgway (USMA, April 1917), John Millikin (USMA, 1910), Manton S. Eddy, and J. Lawton Collins (USMA, April 1917).

The book can be ordered from the press, with ordering info at
www.kansaspress.ku.edu, or from Amazon.com.  The press does not have on-line ordering, but it provides an 800 # and a printable order form.  Amazon indicates it will start filling orders o/a 16 March.  I have also sent the info on the book to west-point.org and anticipate that it will be posted there soon.

For those of you in the DC area, I'll be at the Society for Military History meeting at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Frederick, Md. from 19-22 April.  If any of you can make it to the conference, please let me know before hand so I can be looking for you.

    All the very best,

    Hal

Stratfor, a company that provides global intelligence reports, has approved our using this site as a portal to their daily briefings and topical paper.  Hundreds of Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, and individual decision-makers use Stratfor as a source.  In addition, a number of our classmates have reported that Stratfor was a valuable source for them.  Reporting is non-political, and seems on the mark.

  • DOMAS & WEISEL TO CONQUER PECOS WILDERNESS 14-18 August 2007

George Domas and Steve Weisel are planning a trek into the beautiful and scenic Pecos Wilderness of New Mexico.  After conquering the Appalachian Trail the pair has looked to other challenges to extend them and to add more credentials to their already impressive resumes.  Ken Kvam has offered to be the local guide as long as George and Steve agreed to keep the pace slow enough to enable him to keep them in sight.  Also accompanying these two monster trekkers will be Bill Hoover and Fred Taylor.  Others have indicated an interest but have yet to commit.

The trip section is planning this adventure for the period 14-18 August of this year.  It is not for the faint of heart as base camp at Pecos Baldy Lake will be at 10,500 ft. and one of the day trips will be to the top of East Pecos Baldy Mountain at 12,500 ft.  All of the other daily activities (fishing, hiking, etc.) will be “at altitude”.  With any luck, deer, elk, and Big Horn Rocky Mountain Sheep will be seen, and may even eat Jolly Ranchers out of our hands.  Both before and after the trip Commander’s Time will be available in the local region – Santa Fe, Taos, Angel Fire, Albuquerque, Gallup, and Las Vegas (NM, that is), just to name a few of the NM “Hot Spots”.  Mesa Verde National Park, home of the famous Anasazi Cliff Dwellings, is also within striking distance.

There’s still time for you to join up and participate.  Mind you, it isn’t a cakewalk; but my wife and I have hiked in several times – once we took our college-aged daughter, so it’s NOT out of your reach. If you are interested please contact me at nmkvam1@comcast.net for more information.
