  • Unpublished Books

In discussions with some of our classmates, Dan Evans has discovered that there are stories that have been written but have not made it to print.  He suggested that we might provide a way to present these stories to our classmates.

Have you written a story but have not found a way to get it published?  We are providing an avenue for you to display your creative works on line.  Finish off that manuscript.  Dust off those pages you wrote last year.  Send us those military histories, leadership lessons, comedies, works of poetry, and anything else that you deem worthy of being read by our classmates.  We will e-publish it on this site.    We don't promise anything fancy, just access to your works in whatever forum you send them to us.

Click on the menu link Unpublished Books  located in the list to the left of the screen to view the list of offerings that have been forwarded to us.

Dust off your old manuscripts.  We have provided a forum for you to e-publish.   Dan Evans, in conversations with some of our classmates, has noted that there are works out there that are worth reading but remain unpublished.

We have added a new link that augments our listing of works published by our classmates that have been reported to this site.  Send in your works of art that have yet to be discovered and we will add them to the list, located on the link – Unpublished Works.

  • March/April Assembly Article

Steve Weisel provided the photo of him and George Domas at Springer Mountain, near Dahlonega, the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail (AT). Steve wrote: “We hiked there from Damascus VA, and 2007after 456 miles reached there in chilly, foggy, and raw weather on 8 Nov 06. With our arrival, I completed my hiking of the entire 2,170 miles of the AT. I enjoyed the camaraderie of my Beast Barracks roommate for 1,100 miles of hiking. Of significant note is that George had previously completed the entire AT, and yet he was still willing to go back out again to support me. There were no easy days but, we concurred it was a terrific experience.” Steve noted in a footnote that Dahlonega and the Ranger Camp are far cries from the sleepy little affairs where he, Tom Curran and Jim Carson were stationed in the late 1960s.

Here’s a bit of interesting West Point connection. Joe Palco’s daughter happens to be ma

rried to a fellow whose last name is Havens, which gives Joe the potential of becoming the grandfather of Benny Havens. Joe, never one to leave thing to chance has already nicknamed one of his granddaughters Benny. I can see the potential for substantial confusion should a grandson ever come along.

Bob Magruder sent along a photo of him & Angie with John & Toby Tate and Tom & Ann Butler at the Texas A&M game, a game we should have won. A close inspection of the photo will reveal that Tom is wearing a Golfing Grads of USMA golf shirt.

This bit of serendipity permits me to once again announce that this years Golfing Grads event will be held 26–29 April at Amelia Island Plantation, FL. You will recall that ’64 won that event last year and there appears to be great enthusiasm for a repeat performance. While on the subject of golf, John Murray provided a photo of five guys who failed to make the cut at last years Booze Allen Classic. I recognize John, Baratto, Otjen, and Haydash, but who is the fifth guy?

October saw classmates dropping in to check on Gary Walk. Sig Weiner’s visit was on the occasion of Gary’s 65th. Sig, I think, lives in the San Antonio area. Tom Anthony was visiting from Huntington Beach, CA.  George G. Jacunsk

  • Richard Oehrlein in Army Sports Hall of Fame

Fior those of you who missed it, our classmate Ernie Oehrlein was inducted into theArmy Sports Hall of Fame last October.  The offical newsrelease for this event stated:

    Richard Vincent Oehrlein

    Class of 1964

    Squash (1961-64)/Men’s Tennis (1962-64)

Equally adept at handling either a tennis racquet or a squash racquet, Richard Oehrlein carved a superb athletic career

at West Point prior to his graduation in 1964. A three-year letterwinner in both sports, Oehrlein served as the squash

team captain as a senior in 1963-64.

Over his three varsity seasons, Army’s squash team forged a 31-10 (.756) record and defeated Navy all three years.

During Oehrlein’s senior season, the Black Knights crafted a sterling 12-2 record en route to tying Princeton for

second place at the national tournament. Army’s dozen wins that winter came in succession, after an 0-2 start, while

nine of the 12 were via shutout.

Playing at number one singles over his final two years, and teaming with brother Walter at number one doubles

throughout much of his final two seasons, Richard Oehrlein was instrumental to the team’s 38-10 (.792) showing over

his three varsity campaigns. At one point, Oehrlein built a 30-match win streak, which was snapped late in his senior

season. He was 16-0 during dual meets as a junior, and competed at the NCAA Championships in both singles and

    doubles in 1963.

Army’s tennis squad defeated Navy during each of Oehrlein’s three seasons, while the Black Knights’ 1962 victory

was its first over the Mids since 1949.

  • Faulkner at West Point, April 1962

The spring of 1962 was an interesting time for our Class.  We heard William Faulkner read to three different cadet audiences,,  heard General MacArthur give what might be the greatest speech ever given by a military officer, and listened to the young John F. Kennedy give an inspiring graduation message”.  This was heady stuff for us young cadets to receive forty-five years ago.  On this site over time we will revisit these events, perhaps sparking memories of what you were thinking and feeling if and when you attended these events.
