Bluegrass Hill
Well, here's the Witts home in SW Virginia. It sits on the military
crest of a hill cloaked in clover and multitudes of wild flowers. You
can see forever, over the folds of the Blue Ridge and adjacent horse pasture.
Betsy and I are captives of the garden out of sight to the left, and the
acres of grass to mow with my tractor. I have to rise at 0530 to
be able to crawl back into bed by 2100.
Jack Price '64 came over last night to take these shots with a digital
camera and post to my Personal Home
Page. He's a sneaky cuss. You heard how he got me snagged with the bees?
(That doesn't even begin to count the thousands of dollars he told me to
sink into computers!) Here's what they look like. Those cargo straps keep
the bears from flipping the hives, but those splintered corners are from
bear fangs. Honey's real popular in these parts! I had to build
these stands in my woodshop since my bad back makes it hard to heft these
100 pound hive bodies when they're full of bees, brood, and honey.
These two hives will yield about 300 pounds of honey this year. I'm
getting Betsy a bee suit for Easter. We're sending out free honey
to all classmates for Christmas. First asked, first served.
My son Jim and I built this garden house over the past week while he
was home
for a vacation. I have developed into a master craftsman, making
these dutch doors hung to millimetric perfection. Betsy will do her
repotting and gardening magic under these solar windows. We have
asparagus this spring the size of small baseball bats. Ask Jack, he cleaned
us out of a week's supply in return for coming up to get my Email program
running. Prince of a fellow! Just don't turn your back on your asparagus
patch while he's in the AO.!
The shot of Betsy was taken at the Founders Day Dinner while she was
admiring the flowers in our table arrangements. Think she'll look
as good in a bee suit?
