I am looking for any info on my Mother's brother who played in the West Point Band in the early 1900's. His name was Oren or Orian Wilder. I believe he was an enlisted man who played the saxophone. My understanding is that he played solo's for possibly two presidents while in the band. He later became a state trooper for NYC and was killed in the line of duty during the prohibition era.

As a former member of the Canadian Forces I have long admired the men and women of the "Long Gray Line" - as a collector of motion picture film scores for more than fifty years, and Glee Club records and tapes, the music provided by the USMA Glee Club has been a long time favorite - remember the famous Tyrone Power-John Ford Film, with Maureen O'Hara, "The Long Gray Line" . I have been recently impressed with the Glee Club rendition, of the old hymn, "Mansions of the Lord" featured in the soundtrack of the outstanding film dedicated to the US Army, Viet Nam, "We Were Soldiers" and the old pre Civil War hymn, "When Shall We Meet Again", featured in Ken Burns famous TV series, "The Civil War". God, give us men! A time like this demands, Strong minds, great hearts, true faith and ready hands; Men whom the lust of office does not kill; Men whom the spoils of office cannot buy; Men who possess opinions and a will; Men who have honor; men who will not lie; Men who can stand before a demagogue, And damn his treacherous flatteries without winking! Tall men, sun-crowned, who live above a fog. In public duty and in private thinking For while the rabble, with their thumb-worn creeds, Their large professions and their little deeds, Mingle in selfish strife, lo! Freedom weeps, Wrong rules the land and waiting Justice sleeps. Josiah Gilbert Holland (1819-1881) Holland's plea has been answered many times--when our country had need for such men---None more than those who went to West Point. May God bless America and those who defend it,

I have loved the army ever since I was born and I'm only 12 years old. When I grow up I'd like to become an Army Ranger but I don't know if I can go to WestPoint and still become a Ranger.I've been reading about the Army ever since I could read and I have been concentrating my whole life to become a Ranger but people think I'm DUMB,STUPID,and CRAZY to like the Army.People say to me "Why do you want to go to war", but I say " I don't want to go to war, I just want to do what I like to do and what I will do when I grow up".People also ask me "How do you know that you will get into the Army Rangers", and I say"Because I will make it my #1 goal in my whole life and advance in rankings and fight for my country.Even if I don't become an Army Ranger I will always follow the Ranger creed. I had just been to West Point at a ceremony (memorial) at the grave site of Gen. James Gavin. It was about the men who were members of the 82nd Airborne. Some of the men were still there during the Normandy landing and beyond D-Day to serve with him and fellow troopers. Two of General"s daughters and two of his grandchildren were also there. We had a luncheon and the entire memorial was a heartfelt tribute to the commander, military participants, the colors guard and everyone who served with the All American 82nd Airborne Division. I looked for the web because I was so impressed by West Point, cadets and the gorgeous grounds. Is there some way to request a map of the entire Military Academy area, buildings and streets? If so I would like to have such a map. Meanwhile your web is terrific. Lots of information and pictures. Good job.

I am so proud to be the mother of a West Point cadet. The traditions and history that accompany each cadets' experience, and of course his familys', provide such humbling honor. Thank you to all who are participating in honoring West Point and our cadets through the Bicentennial Festivities. Being on the West Coast it is difficult and costly to be at West Point. Thus, any other experience and exposure that can be had are grately appreciated. Thank you West Point and the parent's club of Orange County, CA for helping us stay in touch! JLE

I was born at West Point October 23, 1968. My father Stephen Gabriel was raised at West Point, as his father Master Sgt John J. Gabriel served there. Both of my grandparents (John and Kathryn Gabriel) are buried in the cemetary at West Point. My father proudly served three years in the Army and 23 years in the Marine Corps. In May of 1962 he was sent from Japan (where he was serving) back to West Point for his father's funeral. He was lucky enough to be one of the people present during MacArthur's speech. West Point will forever be in my heart. There are not enough words to describe the respect I have for all of those fortunate enough to attend. This past March my father died. He missed the 200th, but on behalf of him and my grandfather and myself I want to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY WEST POINT!!!! "But in the evening of my memory always I come back to West Point. Always there echoes and re-echoes Duty-Honor-country."

I'm an amateur history and genealogy buff. The page of old terms was a neat addition to the site. Would like to see a complete list of all grads who attended West Point, even before it officially became a military academy. There are families that I know of who KNOW their descendants went to West Point, but have no way of looking of the classes online. It's quite an undertaking, but listing all those who attended by class year...i.e. Class of 1830....then listing all who attended in that year. You could do a great service to many researchers by adding this feature.

It has been an HONOR to serve The United States Military Academy for the last 12 years as a MALO/Region Commander of Southern California and to have been selected to teach at 2 Intersessions during these years. "DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY" has come to mean more to me than ever before. I will continue to serve my Country as an American citizen as I retire in August of this year. I have served the Country since July 1970. I must now pass the torch of responsibility to another fine Army Officer to carry it on into the next century! I will always remember the great experiences I have had meeting and interviewing new Cadets. I hope some of them will become our future Presidents of the United States. God Bless America and GO ARMY! As a former officer in the U. S. Army, and as an avid military historian by avocation, I want to commend the USMA at this Bicentennial celebration time. I've read Stephen Ambrose's book on the History of West Point, which was impressive and from which I learned much about the rich heritage of West Point. I've also read all of General Douglas MacArthur's books and the wonderful book on him by William Manchester (American Caesar). The names of Sylvanus Thayer and Douglas MacArthur will forever be honored there on the Plain. With the recent developments in our world today, and the absolutely terrific performance of our military in both the Gulf War and now in Afghanistan, the officer corps of our nation has proved itself to be the best in the world. Our soldiers today are professional and honorable. I thank God that the words of one of the songs you play on your web page are so true: "America, America, God shed His grace on thee." I'm proud to be a citizen of this great nation and am very proud to have served in the U. S. Army. You people at West Point preserve the heritage and the values that are so important to the survival of our nation> "Duty, Honor, Country." Sincerely, Don Buchman

You have a beautiful web page to illustrate an institution which is the pride of our country. I was nominated to attend the USMA by my congressman in 1967, but attended Texas A&M University, earning an Army commission and a B.S. in Psychology. I went on to earn two more degrees in Psychology, to include the Ph.D., and a further degree in clinical psychopharmacology. I served for seven years on active duty and 20 in the USAR. I was always proud of my nomnation the the USMA, and have often wondered how my life would have been different if I had chosen that path. As I have said, the USMA is one of the prides of our country, and my best to the faculty, students, and alumni.

I have been trying to get information on LTC William H. Lewis who was killed by Indians at Squaws Den in Western Kansas in September 1878 and was buried at Fort Wallace, Kansas. He was later moved from the Fort Wallace cemetary and moved to another location. He had received two accommodations in the New Mexico campaigns in the 1860s. He was honored by having a fort named after him at Fort Lewis, Colorado. He is a graduate of West Point the year unknown to me. I would like to have any information about this officer, including birth place, nationality, family(if any at the time), photo(if a medal of honor recepient), he was supposed to have been assigned to the staff at Fort Dodge prior to the Indian battle in Kansas and if his name was read at the congressional hearings in 1879 for his metorious valor during the Indian campaign. Also, there should be some information on record at the State of Kansas level I would think. If you could just tell me where this information could be found and if there is information in the Department of the Military, Indian campaigns, or some other records. I would like all the information that could be found about LTC William H. Lewis. Thanking you in advance Most Sincerely Norman L. Hello! My name is Joo Hyung Lee. I'm from south Korea. I have a thinking to be an US Army officer. How can i do that? I served as a KATUSA which is Korean Augmentee to the United States Army. I have Army Commendation Medal. Now I'm preparing to go back to school which is 4 years college. I've already finished 2 years and got 2 more years to go. I was trying to find the way I can join the Army when I was serving in 2nd Infantry Division, 8th Army. But I couldn't get it. So I'm asking now. If there is any qualification to be an officer, would you let me know please? I'll wait for your reply. Thank you. My email address is juhyunglee@yahoo.com

I'm pretty sure the statute of limitations has expired on the Sugar Bowl incident that someone spoke of here in the guestbook. If my memory serves me correctly, that was 1968, and it was actually the Sec Army (or Sec Def) that put the kabosch on us accepting an invite to the Sugar Bowl. As a consequence, a small group of us in the infamous 4th Regiment (widely known for our independent and mischievous spirit, which some mistook for lack of military bearing) decided that a midnite raid on the Washington Hall to appropriate the sugar bowls off the tables would be good fodder for the newspapers, and good training for Ranger school. We snuck dressed in black and carrying a barracks bag each, and proceeded to remove the silver bowls. There were a few heart-stopping moments, when we had to duck under the tables, as the cadet OOD and SDO came through. We thought for sure our lives were over, but they just kept going, and we continued the raid. The bowls were temporarily stowed in our company supply locker, and returned later, after our point had been made. As I recall, the incident made the front cover of the sports section of the New York Times! We never revealed who did it, of course, and fortunately, we didn't get caught. A successful clandestine mission!

Scanning through the letters, I discovered my old friend, Bill Heiberg, from the WP Post School and Highland Falls High School, and we are renewing our friendship via email. It's fascinating to learn from your guests' letters that West Point has affected many others as profoundly as it did me. I think your military academy is similar to the military academy here in the Philippines. But your education is higher than ours, and you give more courses and majors than PMA. {Philippine Military Academy} which is based here in Baguio City. You set higher standards in your education. I'm not a cadet, but I'm a college student.I study mass communications in University of Baguio. I am not comparing your school to our military academy, but its just when I saw USMA featured in CNN last week, the uniforms and hats look the same as what the cadets here wear. And you have similar presentations of your cadets parading in the grounds, just as the cadets of PMA do on occassions. The educational curriculum is different, in here when cadets graduate they choose to join the PHIL.NAVY or the PHIL.ARMY.Because here, they train cadets in both for the NAVY and the ARMY.Well, thank you very much for your time... and I hope your academy will prosper through the years..... thank you! GOD BLESS!

I am an IBM graduate, an exec with over 40 years in the IT industry, and 40 years in the Hudson Valley. My avocation is antique prints. I have authored and published several historic books and educational videos. The latest project is a CD "Hudson Scenes Remembered." It will include a great deal of material on West Point. I will be contacting the West Point Historian to see how I can support the US WP Bicentennial. The Centennial Website has given me some ideas that may prove to be useful. In light of the Setember 11, 2001 actions taken upon the United States, I am proud to know that there are 4,000 young men and women who will serve as our military leaders in years to come. Thank you for the comittment of time you are giving to this wonderful country. I am proud to know a third year West Point cadet, Cadet Matthew Kotowski. Like so many others growing up in the New York area, my parents brought me up to West Point as a kid to see a football game and learn about the history of my country. I never appreciated how much of that history began and continues at West Point until I became a West Point Mom. (For Country and Corps . . . 2004.) I am in awe, both of the institution and of the cadets I have had the privilege to get to know during my trips to West Point and on their visits to Brooklyn. What an incredible group of young men and women. Congratulations . . . and here's to the next 200 years!

To whom it may concern, I am currently doing genealogy on my mother's side of the family. My grandfather was Lt. John G. Merrick of the U.S. Cavalry. I have a letter that says he was a cadet in 1920 and 1921. Is there any way I could find out if he did attend West Point? I would also like to know if he graduated from West Point. And if his records are available viewing. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. Sincerely, Rick Wagner

I sang in the Glee Club '58-'61, and was its Cadet-in-Charge First Class year. At that time, its director was LTC Bill Schempf, also USMA Band Director. A tremendously talanted man! The Glee Club itself is the closest thing West Point has to a college fraternity. Some of my closest friendships were forged there, and I came to enjoy the Tuesday and Thursday evening practices (as well as the trips!) One of our most memorable trips was to the Waldorf Towers, where we sang at General MacArthur's annual birthday celebration. Among our renditions was "Old Soldiers Never Die," and "Waltzing Matilda" in recognition of his years in Australia during WWII. When we sang "The Corps," tears rolled down his cheeks. At the end of the concert, I introduced myself to him, and he recognized my name because my Dad served with him during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He threw his arms around me and welcomed "the son of his old "Comrade-in-Arms" to the Army. In am now enjoying a Glee Club disk I bought at the Visitors' Center Gift Shop (the AOG Gift Shop doesn't carry it). It is copied from a 1966 33rpm Glee Club recording -- are you aware of a more recent disk I can purchase? While on telephone "hold" with AOG, I heard the Glee Club sing "The Corps," and was startled when the sopranos cut in. I would appreciate any lead you can give me to find that disk. /Bill Heiberg, '61

Most impressive...... I would nominate Capt William Lamble Cooper, 16458 as an officer that brought the class of 1956 through much of their time in L-1. He was caring, fun loving and compassionate. As a turnback not making a very good transition in C-2, he took me in to L-1 and worked with me to be a good L-1er. At one time, I was on the wrestling Corps Squad (wrestling 121 lb), he called me in and waved a fistful of comments from an instructor who said I was not concentrating and he had difficulty getting my attention. Captain Bill said "Why?". I said it was the last hour before lunch and I could not concentrate well as I was starving for lunch (when you weigh 128, going down to 121 and then 119 for the easterns, you live for the beef broth and the sliced toast and beef slices). He tossed the chits in the file and said "Try". I didn't realize it then, but he went over to the P and told him to lighten up and I actually did do better. This was only one of his efforts for "his" 56ers. But for him, I would probably have washed out and had no career.

I am the founder of a newly proposed Charter Military High School (Sarasota Military Academy) in Sarasota, Florida for eventually 800 students. We are very much intersted in learning basic elements of the values sof West Point that might be incorporated into the very fiber of our newly created public school. This is the first charter school of its type in The United States, so we are most open to advice and counsel. We have a Lt. General (Retired) from The U.S.,Army on our Board of Direcdtors who is giving us great assistance and advice. He is NOT a West Point graduate. However, we are looking to West Point graduates for assistance in the development of this new institiution.
