As a current cadet in the Class of 2002, this is a great resource
for the Corps to learn about its history. It seems that a lot
of traditions and heritage are slowly eroding from the lives of
the present Corps. Hopefully this trend will change and this is
a good place to start. Go Circus!!!!!

I am a descendant of the Hodgson family of Philadelphia Pa.
2nd Lt. Benjamin Hubert Hodgson was a 1870 graduate of West Point.
He was killed at Reno's Crossing at Little Big Horn Montana June
25, 1876. I discovered he was buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in
Philadelphia. There is a nice momument there for him, but no other
information. I arranged with the cemetery to set up a memorial
in their visitor's center. This included photos from our collection,
including his graduation photo from West Point, information about
Custer and the Little Big Horn and a copy of a painting of Lt.
Hodgson in the river, with Trumpeter Fisher trying to save him.
Lt. Hodgson was dragged to shore, but shot and killed by an Indian.
The painting is the creation of Ralph Heinz. Benjamin was buried
in the family plot Oct. 1877.

I have only one regret. That I did not attend the USMA. How
fortunate for the guys who did. Dwight Eisenhower, Bill Carpenter
(The Lonesome End), Pete Dawkins, Rollie Stichweh. I attended
my first Army football game on Saturday. Duty, honor, country.
I shall return. For the Bicentennial page, I suggest you name
the all-time Army football team. Blanchard, Davis, Dawkins, et
al. I think it would make for an interesting addition. Good luck.
It's a great page....Robert Wilson.

My husband and I have been looking for examples of 'cats in

and your story of the gerbil paratrooper was very funny (but sad).
I am amazed that with so little brain, the gerb still managed
to learn that heights were no big problem--no small feat when
you consider it is natural for animals to fear heights. If you
would like to know why I am interested in cats in the military,

I'm interesred in West Point's first Native American graduate,
Class of 1822, 6th U.S. Inf., Lt. David Moniac. War of 1812, Mobile,
Alabama (executed six Tenn. militia men for Gen. Jackson) Col.
Gilbert Christian Russell, Sr., 3rd U.S. Inf. (today's 1st), Indian
fighter, was David's kinsman and mentor, and my ancestor. His
father, Capt. Andrew Russell, Jr., Abingdon, Va., fought at the
Battle of King's Mountain, N.C. Maj. David Moniac, Alabama Mounted
Creek Volunteers, Second Seminole War, was killed Battle of Wahoo
Swamp, Fla., while leading his troop across the river, over 50
bullet's in David's remains. David's memorial stone at Bushnell
National Cemetery, Fla., on it's obverse, quotes Gen. Jesup, that
David was, "As brave as any man who has drawn a sword and
faced an enemy". David's brother was Pvt. Samuel Moniac,
Jr., Ala. Mt. Crk. Vols., buried Pass Christian, Miss., in an
unmarked grave, as is his father there, Creek Chief Samuel Moniac,
Sr., Creek Nation allie in the War of 1812. Died there in the
"Indian Removal", the United State's 'thanks' for his
services rendered as a soldier--banishment. As also did happen
to my kinsman, Capt. Pierre Gabriel de Juzan who led 52 Choctaws
in the swamp, 1815 Battle of New Orleans, then banished, removed
from Mississippi. 1838-1841, Pierre Gabriel de Juzan was Chief
of the Pushmataha District, OK. He wed U.S. general of Indian
Troops, Gen. Pushmataha's niece. Jim, Charlotte, N.C.

I am a rising sophomore in high school, and for the past two
years I have been interested in the military, and in particular,
the army. I have read a great deal about it and have ultimately
come to the decision, that if the opportunity presents itself,
I will attend the United States Military Academy. No web site
I have looked at has reinforced that desire as strongly as this
one. The tales of friend- ship, the personal honor and integrity
exhibited in the stories by the former West Pointers, and the
feeling of service and camraderie that these men have written
about so passionately makes me wish and hope very strongly that
one day, I too will join "The Long Gray Line."

Dear who ever this may concern, I am interested in attending
your school, but I understand that it is 98% male. I have heard
that your school is hard, not only because of the studies but
because of the men who would not like women to attend your fine
school. Personally, I do not care. I am intersted in attending,
and I will persue my goal when I am a Junior. Right now I am a
freshamn attending Judge Memorial Catholic High School in Salt
Lake City. The Dean of my school went to West Point and left after
the first year because of the pressure. She is an extreemly tough
woman, and I admire her for that. Your school has everything I
have dreamed of and want. Your mission statement is on my wall,
and I am working hard to be able to be accpeted to your school.
When I do get accepted to your school I will not tolerate what
the guys there are going to give me, I will work just as hard
and I can work just as hard as they can. We are all created equal,
and I hope you will not judge me for having high goals for myself.
Ever since the sixth grade I've wanted to go to your school, and
I will. w/b ~Cresayde COoke

I loved reading this site. I have a couple
of humorous memories from my plebe year. During that time, sometimes
the dessert was either lemon chiffon or strawberry chiffon pie.
Imagine chocolate mousse in a pie crust and sliding around on
an aluminum pie pan, only lemon or strawberry flavored, and that
was lemon chiffon or strawberry chiffon pie. Well, one Thursday
evening at the beginning of the school year, it was steak night,
with baked potatoes on the side and lemon chiffon pie for dessert.
One of my classmates on a nearby table had finished serving the
table with his colleagues, and moments later, the firstie at the
head of the table asked him to pass him another baked potato.
The young man began to pick up the pan of potatoes to pass it
up, but the firstie told him to just toss it to him instead. Well,
the young man, in his desire to meet this request quickly, picked
up a potato and heaved it high, like a grenade. The potato flew
across the table, over the fingers of the firstie's outstretched
hand, and landed right in the middle of the lemon chiffon pie
on the next table! What made it even more hilarious was that the
plebe on the next table had just picked up the pie to announce
it ("SIR, the dessert for this meal is....>WHAP!<")
Well, let's just say that everyone on THAT table, except for the
firsties, got some lemon chiffon pie, courtesy of a potato grenade...
Later on that year, I had duty on the Brigade Tables. One of my
other classmates, in his zeal to get his job done quickly and
with the utmost military efficiency, whipped the pan of Strawberry
Chiffon pie off the table and heaved it up to shoulder level so
that he could announce it. What happened though, was that the
momentum he applied to the pie caused the pie to keep going even
though he stopped the pan, and >SCHWIP!<, the pie slips
out of the pan and plops on the floor. The Strawberry Chiffon
side is resting on the floor, and the crust is now all cracked
and spreading out like an erupting volcano.Well, the young man
has to say something, and so he pauses for a moment and then says,
"SIR, the dessert for this meal is.....GONE!" The firstie
responds, "Well, where is it, 'smack?", The plebe, clearly
chagrined, says after another pregnant pause, "Sir, it's
on the floor!" He took a good verbal pounding for that one,
but when we got back to the company area, we were laughing so
hard we cried.... Ah, nothing like that "family-style"
Corps dinner meal..... Michael A. Armstrong, Sr. H-1, Class of
'87

My mother, Hazel Jane Manly recently died.
But before she did, she told me that 3 or 4 of her relatives attend
West Point Academy. There surname was Talbot and they would have
attended about 1890s. Also, there is a ship named the U.S.S. Ralph
Talbot. Where can I verify this information? Our family is anxious
to learn for our geneaology. (Mrs. Manly's father, Charles Hardin
Talbot was not an Academy graduate. He left the family when Mother
was 4 years old in LaJolla California.) It would be his brothers
that I am seeking to learn about. Thank You.

I think I will consider applying when I am old enough.

I was visiting your site to inquire for my eight year son.
I will like to enroll in such a facility. My main concern is his
lack interest in certain things in life and lack independence.
I think a facility as military school will be beneficial to him.
Then is my other concerns as a single mother. For starters where
will I get such funds, to be able to provide him with this priviledged
opportunity. Then how will I be able to break the tide to let
him go if possibility comes up. Will someone be able to help or
suggest ideas for a single mother.

Our grandson, Christopher Cooper went two years to West Point,
then left for a two year mission for the LDS church in Taipei,
Taiwan. He will re-enter the Point this Summer and finish his
last two years, graduating in 2002. His experience at the Point
for the two years he was there is invaluable. The discipline,
physical fitness, respect and follow through has helped him tremendously
during his mission. It's to bad that all young men can't serve
at West Point and learn the meaning of loyalty to self, his fellow
man and his country. We were teen-agers during WWII and well remember
the patriotism and fierce pride of our young men serving in all
branches of the armed forces. Perhaps that's what stirs in our
hearts when we see our young grandson in his uniform as a West
Point Cadet. There are still many things to be proud of about
our country and West Point is one of them!!

of Henry Burbeck, one of the five generals appointed by President

As far as we know, Jennifer is the first female of Henry Burbeck's

As a wife of a graduate and Grandmother
of a Plebe, I am thrilled with the interest in the work that is
being undertaken to make this a very special edition about West
Point. Were my husband were here, I know he would have had something
to contribute. His father was a graduate of '29 and Jack spent
more than half of his life at West Point by the time he graduated
in '55. Congratulations and best wishes to a project that will
be a treasure of the 200th birthday of the Academy and will live
on for future generations to enjoy.

While getting a grad degree at Notre Dame, I noticed that their
"Rockne Gymnasium" had the one and only West Point Academy
Crest chiseled onto the side of the building. I wonder if any
other college in the nation would have a rival school's logo permanently
drilled into the side of one of their structures? A very nice
gesture.... The Naval Academy Crest was there too.

I am interested in you findings and would love to read any
other accounts that you have had pertaining to the subject of
West Point ghost. I am apart of the class of 2003. If your son
were still here I would like to talk to him. I had begun a paper
on this subject but was forced to change my topic because it was
not argumentative. If you have any ideas of how I could resume
my paper (even if it is not for a grade but a person interest)
please contact me at my email address. I am in company H-4 and
live close to the 47th division. If you have any other resources
that could be of some help in writing a paper, I would greatly
appreciate it. Even if you know of other articles that pertain
the same 47th division I would be highly interested in reading
them. Respectfully, CDT PVT Enslow

Thank you for some interesting information.
I especially enjoyed the patriotic music! My son is a "firstie"
and will graduate this year (2000). In addition to enjoying an
outstanding academic curriculum, he has had the great privilege
to be on the football team. We committed to go to all of the home
and away games. We are at West Point quite often. Every time we
step foot on that campus, our hearts burst with pride and we are
overwhelmed by the historical footsteps our son is following.
We never tire of being there. To have him be a part of "The
Long Grey Line" is one of great honor for our entire family.

formation that night, my Squad leader told my tablemates and me
to return to our rooms, put on trousers we had worn once before,
uniform for supper was Dress Grey over White that night, and on

I just happened to fall into your site
by accident! I landed on the page that mentions the pranks played
at the academy over the years and almost died laughing!!! In my
Junior and Senior years of Highschool, I attended Hargrave Military
Academy in Chatham, Virginia. On the eve of my graduation, all
cadets remaining on campus (the Senior Class and ten ushers from
the Junior Class) were restricted to the barracs to keep us out
of trouble... it didn't work. The Seniors were on the fourth floor
and the ten ushers were on the fifth. My roomamt for the evening
was looking out the window, hanging way ofer the sill, when he
found himself instantly soaked with water from above! One of the
ushers had pourd a cup of water on his head! Of course, this meant
war and Jim filled a cup and went upstairs to exact his revenge.
Within a minute, Jim was back in the room laughing and filling
his cup again. Suddenly, there was a lot of yelling in the halway
as an assault was launched on us by all the ushers! I barracaded
our door with the bunks as we hid in the room. We could hear all
sorts of commotion and laughing and running around outside the
door, yet we weren't budging for anything! We could hear water
running in the pipes and knew that things were escalating very
quickly! Several of the Seniors were in the showers now filling
their waste-baskets with watter and forming a "bucket brigade"
up the iron steps of the fire escape! There were literaly hundreds-of-gallons
of water flowing by this point and I started to worry about the
situation: being about to graduate as a Cadet Officer and a member
of the Battalion Staff, I worried about the reprocussions of our
actions in regards to getting our diplomas... I decided to step
out and give the order to stop. What happened next was awesome!
From both ends of the hallway, the ushers released the pent-up
torrent of close to 100 gallons of water that they held in the
large garbage cans that they had filled in the showers upstairs!
It was an unbelievable sight! All that water rolled down from
either end of the hall and met in the middle with a tremendous
crash! Just as the ripples were subsiding, the Dean, Col. Sanders
and the Commandant of Cadets, Col. Beck, made their appearance...
I was terrified and I screamed everyone to attention! Ooooooooo....
if looks could kill! We were threatened with not getting out diplomas,
indeed, no graduation cerimony whatsoever! The policing of the
water commenced immediately. We did marticulate the next morning,
but I couldn't help but give a glance, as I walked across the
stage, just to be sure that my diploma was legit and not a blank
piece of paper... I was to find out the next year that there had
been about thirty thousand dollars worth of damage done to the
celing of the dining hall below: it had colapsed two days after
we all went home!

I was a cadet in the class of 1967, and had to leave because
of a medical condition that precluded my receiving a military
commission. Recently I have renewed contact with many of my classmates,
and the experience has been truly heartwarming. Although we have
been apart for more than 35 years, the bonds that were formed
at West Point-- and in my case for nine additional months at West
Point Prep School--have remained strong and unyielding. I have
discovered that I have more in common with my Academy classmates
than with anyone at the university where I ultimately spent four
years and graduated. I can only imagine and envy the relationships
that were formed between cadets who spent the entire four years
together at West Point. I will be forever grateful for my West
Point experiences which contributed immensely to my character
development. One cannot pass through the Academy for even a day
without being changed for the rest of his/her life. It is truly
one of our country's greatest institutions for leadership and
character development. David L. Ellis U.S. Central Intelligence

As the mother and mother-in-law of two recent WP grads, it
is exciting to anticipate the bi-centennial of such a great institution.
Their years spent at WP are not "fun" like they would
have been at another college or university but the cadets had
their own style of fun and they made friendships that will last
a lifetime. In hindsight, they appreciate their years there and
might even miss them a bit. As a parent who lived close to WP,
we were able to share some of those moments and get to know the
men and women of WP. It is a 1st rate college and it truly develops
leaders for the 21st century. Happy 200th Birthday to USMA! Congratulations
to all former, current and future cadets and their families who
make up The Long Gray Line.
