Nice touchdown by a Golden Knight.

In comes the "Go Army" flag.

The Navy Leapfrogs demonstrating a maneuver accomplished by the Golden Knights minutes earlier.

The Department of Geography & Environmental Engineering puts on a skit every year for the EV203 "Dirt" students.  In this scene, LTC Dirt (aka LTC Frank Galgano) is sad because CDT Cory Olis lost his Goode's World Atlas.

Also part of the EV203 skit - two songs performed live by the Dirt Band: Prof Jon Malinowski, Dr. Z of the Center for Enhanced Performance and Dr Mike Butkus.

West Point flag pole with the flag standing straight out.  Since our reunion, the weather has been cooler and very windy.

Looking from the Class of 1933 Garden in front of Eisenhower Hall up towards the Catholic Chapel.

Given our recent forum discussions on the USS Cole attack, I thought I would include photos of the USS Cole on the Blue Marlin, preparing for her journey back to the U.S.

Full length shot of the USS Cole on the Blue Marlin.

Looking at the USS Cole bow on.

Steve Plutt and Paul Oettinger (both B-1) resort to cadet ways as they "decorate" Jeff Weart's (B-1) office in Washington Hall.

The full story of Steve's and Paul's exploit can be found on the Tales from the Old Corps page.  We appreciate the efforts of the Cadet Hostess, Mrs Carol Weart, to record this event for posterity.

Memories shared at our reunion brought Geoff Lea (F-4) to share these pictures of the speakers he purchased (and modified) as a cadet and still owns.  They look like standard speakers . . .

Open the concealed doors and the bar is open!  The walls are upholstered with the lining from the cadet issue balck raincoat and buttons from our dress white India uniform.  Each compartment has battery powered lights that go on when the door is opened.  As graduation approached, Geoff refused offers of $$$ for these unique speakers which he still owns.

Class of 1980 panel at the Integrating Women into the Corps of Cadets panel discussion at Eisenhower Hall, 18 October 2000.  The panel followed the Margaret Chase Smith dinner and provided a forum for our classmates to share experiences with cadets from USMA, USNA, USCGA, USMMA, the Citadel and VMI.  From left to right:  Jan Meyer (G-2), Sue Fulton (E-4), Nancy Gucwa (E-3), Jane McKeon (D-2), Mike Conrad (E-4), Karen Strang (D-4), Debbie Lewis (D-2), Sonya Martin (A-4), Bob Smith (B-4), Carol Barkalow (A-3), Lil Pfluke (G-1) and Diane Bracey (F-1).

Sonya Martin tackles a question during the panel discussion while Debbie Lewis and Bob Smith look on.

Carol Barkalow's turn to answer a question.  Lil Pfluke looks on while Bob Smith gets pensive.

Anyone guess who this high school freshman is?  Hint:  he went to Fort Hunt High School in Alexandria, VA, was on the debate team, and is well known to our class for his photographic talents.  That should be a dead giveaway.  He was in B-3 . . .

Doug Lobdell (A-3) takes time off from moderating our class list server.  He's helping a fellow reservist with a booth in the annual Taste of Colorado festival in Denver over the Labor Day weekend.

Doug claims the festival was "fun, mildly profitable" and that he worked his tail off.  He said something about being almost as hard as a 4-day ARTEP.  The last photo I had seen of Doug was sometime around REFORGER 82 and Doug was rafting down a river in Europe with his unit (captured in the "Stars and Stripes").

Dave Shelley (H-3) doing the amusement park scene with son, Nelson.  Dave is doing undercover work for the USPS IG at Universal Studios.

Dave Shelley boating at Disney World.

Dave Shelley and wife, Kathy, take a well deserved break from the rigors of amusement park entertainment.

JB Becker (E-4), Russ Vernon (F-3), and Nancy Gucwa (E-3) all primed for the start of the 15-mile Plebe March from Lake Frederick to the Supe's House.  Coffee cups in hand are a reminder of the 0100 report time to Herbert Hall to catch the buses that would link us up with the new cadet companies.  The Class of 1980 had 7 marchers, the 4th largest class representation.  All told, 40 consecutive classes were represented on the 15-mile hike (1954-1994, except 1992) and the Class of 1945 joined the group for the final two miles to the Supe's House.

That wasn't so bad!  Russ, Mike Trusty, Nancy, Mike Beans (C-4), Steve Dwyer (B-2), and Bob Morris (C-3) gather for a group shot at the Ski Slope where all the Old Grads left the new cadet companies in order to march in as a unit.  Steve is a Regimental Tactical Officer.  Also marching but not in the photo was George Prohoda (D-3).

The Old Grads, all 162, marching from Washington Gate towards the Supe's House.

Russ, Bob, Mike Trusty, Mike Beans, George, Nancy, and JB are joined by Jeff and Carol Weart, Donna Newell, and LTG Christman at the end of the march - Pride and Excellence!  Steve Dwyer was off doing RTO duties already (Photo by John Pellino, DOIM, USMA).

6 August 2000 - New cadets studying knowledge while waiting for "fall in".  This was the day prior to their march out to Lake Frederick.

Army's new logo for athletic teams.  ODIA and SME Power branding unveiled a "new visual identity" for Army athletic teams on 19 July.  The logo replaces the "kicking A" mule logo.  Rick Greenspan, Athletic Director, was quoted in this week's Pointer View as saying, "We felt the old symbols used to represent the U.S. Military Academy's intercollegiate athletic program did not effectively communicate the progressive and dynamic nature of our department."  The preferred moniker for the athletic teams will be "Black Knights" instead of "Cadets".  For more information, go to the web site www.usma.edu/athletics.

Jeff Weart (B-1) contemplating a course of action for the reunion while Bob "Smitty" Smith (B-4) and George Prohoda (D-3) wait with baited breath . . .  NOT!  Reunion meeting on 18 July.

Our trustworthy administrative guru, Joanie Emmer, getting ready to update the Reunion Committee.

George reviews the list of registered attendees while John Canby (H-4) listens to Smitty pontificating.

Multiple conversations keep Scott (H-4) and Kathi (Gerard) (D-4) Snook occupied during the meeting.

Colonel/Princess Aisha Bint Al-Hussein, daughter of the late King Hussein of Jordan, addresses cadets in Arnold Auditorium, on the integration of women into the Jordanian armed forces (1 May 2000).  Princess Aisha earned her airborne wings before graduating from high school.  She is a graduate of Oxford and Sandhurst.

Princess Aisha talks with cadets following the lecture.  The Princess is the Director of Women's Affairs in the Jordanian Armed Forces.  Women are primarily in the medical professions and clerical roles in the General Headquarters but she pointed out they are currently expanding into the military police and other branches.  When asked about women in combat units, she said that Jordanian women do not have the desire to go in that direction at the current time.

Donna (Alesch) (A-3) and Katie Newell with Princess Aisha following the lecture.

Bob Morris, Donna, and Dave Jesmer (C-1) following Princess Aisha's lecture.  Donna's daughter, Katie, is in front.  Dave is the Army Attaché to Jordan, Donna is in the Directorate of Admissions and Bob teaches in the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering.

Army football resumed the Annual Black-Gold Game to conclude the spring practice season.  The good news is that Army won!  Seriously, we'll see a lot more passing (pass to #98, Andrew Potocki, in the photo above) and it was fun to see something besides the wishbone (that has done us well over the years).  The final score of the scrimmage was Black 17 - Gold 7.

More of the Arvin demolition, taken on 13 March 2000.  And we still do not have an agreement on the replacement facility . . .

The guts of Arvin are gone.  To the right is Hayes Gym (Indoor Obstacle Course Test site) and to the left is the wing with the racquetball courts and 6th floor gym.
