Class Scholarship

The USMA Class of 1959 Scholarship Program

Purpose.

On March 15, 1981, the United States Military Academy Class of 1959 established an annual scholarship program. The purpose of the program is to foster the academic development of the recipients of the scholarship grant.

Eligibility.

The scholarship is awarded to children of members of the Class of 1959.  They must be juniors, seniors, or post-graduate students enrolled in an accredited four year college or university in the United States.

Award.

The scholarship is a grant in the current amount of $2000 subject to the availability of funds. The award will be made directly to the recipient. The only obligation incurred by the recipient is that the award must be used to further his or her education.

Selection.

The recipient will be selected not later than 15 June by a selection panel designated by the Class of 1959. Criteria for selection include but are not limited to: academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, community service, and educational objectives. Incomplete applications will not be considered for selection.

Application Procedures.

Interested students should apply not later than 15 March for the succeeding academic year. Application forms are available on line at:

Microsoft Word Format ( HTML format at the end of this document)

or by writing to:

Powell Hutton

3806 North 27th Street

Arlington, VA 22207

All completed applications are to be returned to the same address and will be treated with the strictest confidence. They are seen only by the members of the selection panel. Applications will not be carried forward to the next year.

Each applicant will be notified of selection or non-selection by letter as soon after June 15 as possible. The annual recipient will also be announced publicly in the Class of 1959 Summary in a fall issue of The Assembly.

Tips for Scholarship Applicants.

If you had tried for a scholarship one year and didn’t make it, don’t give up. Apply again next year, because the competition (and your own qualifications) will certainly be different.

In most cases, applicants are highly qualified. Only the lack of funds limits selection to one college student a year. That means that the selection committee often has to use some "discriminators" to separate the top candidates. To make sure you make the best case for yourself, here are some tips that might help:

Don’t

- Make careless misspellings or grammatical mistakes

Do

- Explain terms or jobs that are not obvious to an outsider. We all know about the National Honor Society or National Merit Scholarships. We don’t, however, know some orders or jobs, e.g., we can guess what "Project Home Repair" is, but we might shortchange you on the amount of time you spent on it, or if it’s for the elderly, the church, or an apprenticeship for carpenters. We generally know what the team captain on a varsity sport does, but we’re less clear about, say, members of an advisory board, what they do, or how much time is involved. Help the selection committee understand.

- Give your present year grade. Most of us think in terms of the traditional four-year curriculum, but a number of students are on co-op or a five-year, multi-major program outside the norm. Help the selection committee understand your special accomplishments, needs, and plans.

- List all the employment you’ve had. The application form has a place for employment, but many applicants apparently interpret that as being during the school year only. If you had a job during the summer, show it.

- Spell out your short and long range goals. If two applicants have similar scholastic, sports, and community service records, the one with the clearer goals will get the nod.

- Use the form as best you can. It makes the categorizing of diverse information easier. It doesn’t however, suit the needs or situations of all candidates. Use Part II, paragraph 5 of the application to explain your special case.

Good luck!
