Captain
Matthew Carpenter was born in Okinawa, Japan and grew up in a military family.
He attended the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, and
graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Systems Engineering
and a commission as a Second Lieutenant of Armor. His military education includes
the Armor Officer Basic Course, Military Intelligence Captain’s Career
Course, Signal Intelligence and Electronic Warfare Officer Course, and Counterintelligence
Special Agent Course.
Captain Carpenter served as a Tank Platoon Leader Scout Platoon Leader, and Assistant S-3 in 3-7 CAV, 3ID, Fort Stewart GA He deployed to OIF III serving in Baghdad, Iraq as a Scout Platoon Leader. He served as a BN S-2 in 1-17 IN, 5/2 SBCT and is currently the Company Commander of C Co, 109th MI BN at Ft Lewis, WA.
Matt was diagnosed with
Primary Schlerosing Cholangitis Sept 13, 2009, just 10 days before deployment
as a Company Commander, Charlie Company, 109th MI BN, 201st BfSB, Ft Lewis
WA. On October 12, 2009, Matt was diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma (Bile
Duct Cancer). After a 14 month battle, to include chemotherapy, radiation,
and a good hard fight, Matt passed away December 1, 2010. He is survived by
his wife, Beth, and son Joey. He is also survived by his parents, LTC Patrick
Carpenter and Debra and his siblings; Scott, Doug, Kaitlin, Patrick, Alex,
Miranda, Mitchell, Ian and Megan.
