NEWS RELEASE -- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RELEASE NO. 40-02

ACADEMY SADDENED BY LOSS OF RECENT GRADUATE --July 2, 2002

WEST POINT, N.Y. –The Fort Benning Public Affairs Office announced today that 2nd Lt. Zachariah Miller, 22, of Stoneboro, Pa., died Monday, July 1, while attending training at Fort Benning, Ga.

According to the Fort Benning Public Affairs Office, Miller was participating in a land navigation training exercise and failed to return to the base station at the end of the course. Members of the 75th Ranger Regiment immediately began a search and found him dead.

Miller, a Truman and Rhodes scholar, Army Rugby team captain and distinguished graduate ranked 11th out of 957 in the class of 2002. He received his diploma from President George W. Bush just a month ago from the U.S. Military Academy.

“I’m deeply saddened,” said U.S. Military Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. William J. Lennox Jr. “Zac exemplified the true definition of an Army officer and will be missed by all. This is a tremendous loss for the Academy and the Army,” added Lennox.

The funeral is on Tuesday 9 July 2002 at Sandy Lake Wesleyan Church, Sandy Lake, PA at 11AM, burial to follow service (Oakhill Cemetary, Sandy Lake, PA)).
