42. John P. BARNES

Told by Mary Evans Henderson: "John P. Barnes used to play the violin and sing to us. We'd really love to hear him. He would play the violing and sing about the battles he was in while in the Army. When Gen. Buell was shot at Clear Creek, (the Rebels had us surrounded), John P. Barnes caught Gen. Buell when he fell and asked him how bad he was hurt and he said, 'I think it's fatal.' He laid him down gently. He also told us 'War is Hell' and it does no good."

43. Mary Jane HOFFMAN

Told by Mary Evans Henderson: "Jane could tack a quilt without putting it in a quilting frame and got it just as straight and pretty as anyone could. She weighed 360 pounds. She died of dropsy. She couldn't drink water at all at the last - Doctor's orders. She could have slivers of ice when she was thirsty."
