"Newspaper Clipping: Elgin Recorder, Elgin, Union CO., Oregon. Thursday Oct. 24, 1918. PIONEER ANSWERS DEATH SUMMONS. John P. Barnes, who located near Elgin in 1873, died at Silverton, Oregon, Sunday, October 20. Death resulted only a few hours following a stroke of paralysis. The remains were shipped to Elgin for burial, arriving here Monday morning, accompanied by a son, Charles Barnes. Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon by Elder G.E. Mayfield and the remains were interred in the City Cemetary, where teh wife of the deceased was buried several years ago.
Deceased was born in Newton County, Illinois, March 9, 1844 and was 74 years and 8 months old. Deceased enlisted at the outbreak of the Civil War and served four years in the Seventh [sic] Kansas Calvary under Capt. Henry P. Ledger and received an honorable discharge at DeValls Bluff, Arkansas at the close of the war 1866. He was married in the year 1866 and with his wife came to Oregon, locating near Elgin, in 1873. To the union eight children were born, seven of whom survive, one son having died November 18, 1901. The wife died December 4, 1899.
The surviving children are Mrs. Joseph Henderson, Elgin; Mrs. Ollie Evans, Caldwell; J.W. Barnes, Caldwell; Chas.A. and Mrs. Della Pflaum and Mrs. Amy Simmons, of Silverton; and Mrs. Izora Simmons of Imnaha. Other surviving relatives are two brothers, Thes, of Elgin; Solomon of Eugene, and a sister Mrs. Sarah Fly of California. There are also 30 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
