Background

This distribution was first discussed in 1908, in a paper authored by "Student" — actually William S. Gosset, a brewmaster for Guiness.  Guiness did not allow him to publish under his own name; hence the pseudonym.  As with the χ^2 distribution, it is a special case of a more general distribution.

As with the χ^2 distribution, we are primarily including Student's T distribution because it is used in other computations we will study later in the course.
