Background

The χ^2 distribution is a special case of the Gamma distribution. It is a single parameter family of distributions that is intimately tied to the Normal distribution (and in particular to probabilities related to the variance of the Normal distribution).  We will use the χ^2 distribution for confidence intervals later in the course, and it is used in other statistical applications as well.
