May Luncheon- The Poop

New West Point Society President Mike Cantor ’80 presided over his first luncheon on May 25 at the ROCC. Mike welcomed the new board and society members present and thanked the previous board, with particular appreciation to past President Art Meier ’63.

The Society goals were noted:

1. Support USMA

2. Support USMA Admissions

3. Encourage and instill fellowship

Mike noted that we will build on the fellowship foundation laid by Art Meier’s efforts. Toward this end, Bill Crawford ’80, F-2 Zoo fame, was appointed Party Sergeant. Bill (aka Craw) will be ably assisted by a motley crew of party assistants and will plan the social gatherings of the society. Mark your calendars as the fun will begin with Benny Havens hours on June 25 and July 9. These Benny Havens hours will take the place of summer luncheons. Our luncheon schedule will pick up again in August.

See you at the Nook on June 25!

2010 Annual Business Meeting

The Annual Business Meeting today was well attended.   Discussion on Founders Day was the main focus of the meeting.  All invitations are out, initial planning for the Dean’s visit to Redstone during the day on the 26th has begun (being coordinated between Bill Crawford and Phil Patterson),  Dick Jackson is going to help out with the Name Tags, Tim Thames will be helping with the flowers, Gail Dwyer signed up for getting the cake, Bill Burns will be drafting the program and Jimmy Hill’s son will do the publishing, Steve Rice will be escorting the Dean, I need to check on what flags the USSRC has and if necessary Jody Creekmore will get the GO’s flags.  We expect the web sign up (credit card payment) should be running later this week (the web master was out of country and got delayed because of the snow on the east coast last week.)  I will notify everyone when it is operational.

Jody Creekmore explained the new efforts that the Admission team is working on (Gail Dwyer has taken on the role of what the MALO’s used to do).  The team will begin undergoing some training to be able to spread the wealth of performing the interviews.  The “From Bob to the Point” display was shown along with the “bag” for counselors.  These were initiatives of the Ecklins.   Upcoming events:  Grissom Military night on the 2nd of Mar (I think I got that right – someone correct me if wrong.)  On 10 Mar the Outreach Officer from West Point will be at a by invitation meeting at Huntsville High.  Expanding the poster idea for each high school was discussed and the use of the bags.  Everyone thought it should be done.

The last major item was the nomination committee listing of vacant and vacating positions for the next three years.

These individuals will be voted on at the Founders Day dinner, other nominations can be made, but what follows is the recommendation:

President:  Mike Cantor ’80
Vice President: Tim Thames ’65  (this position is for two years due to vacancy)
Secretary: Gail Dwyer ’81
Board Position: Don Ecklin ’77
Board Position: Art Meier ’63

In the discussion by the Admissions Team, it was apparent that they will require some funds to make proper posters, displays and “bags”.  You have the opportunity to help out by making sure you add either membership dues or a donation with your Founders Day reservation.

Thanks to all who were there today and volunteered for Founders Day duties.  The next meeting will be on the 16th of March and by that time we will need more help.

2010 Founders Day

Dear Fellow Graduate

On behalf of the members of the West Point Society of the Tennessee Valley, you are cordially invited to attend the celebration of the United States Military Academy’s, Founders Day 2010, at the Davidson Center, US Space and Rocket Center, on Friday, 26 March 2010.  Benny Haven’s hour will begin at 6:30 PM, with dinner at 7:30 PM.  Dress is formal (Mess or Dress Blues, tuxedo, business suit, or cocktail dress).

The guest speaker this year will be BG Patrick Finnegan, the Dean of USMA, Class of 1971.

The US Space and Rocket Center will have guides available to explain the many displays within the Davidson Center during the Benny Haven’s hour.  As in the past we plan on welcoming new Friends of West Point.  Mr. Joe Fitzgerald and COL (ret) Tom Brown have been nominated.  We also will be welcoming those Candidates for the Class of 2014 who have accepted nominations.  This year we will not have speeches by the Oldest and Youngest Graduate present, although they will be recognized.

Please join us to renew old acquaintances, meet new graduates in our area, salute our Alma Mater on its 208th Birthday, and have fun.  Please respond by Sunday, 21 March 2010, by accessing our Society’s website. Watching the Army Navy Game

It is only a few days away.  Buffalo Wild Wings (Jones Valley location) is going to set aside two areas for watching the game.  The main bar area and also a big screen in the seating area.  It is a family friendly location.

Also remember there will be a group going to Tut Fann Veteran’s home to watch the game with veterans.

Advanced Individual Academic Development Program

Huntsville AOG members,

Attached is some information regarding West Point’s Advanced Individual Academic Development Program.  Marty Eaton and I coordinate this for AMRDEC and facilitate AIAD for other entities here at Redstone. Currently, we are soliciting input for job descriptions for Cadets to perform engineering activities at RSA this summer.  We can assist with your receiving a cadet whether you are with AMRDEC or another entity located at Redstone. Additionally, private industry can provide funding for their own cadets.  However, we need some assistance.

The cadets have to choose their summer location for training based upon input we will provide to West Point.  Last year was the first year we did this and we initially had no specific job descriptions and provided only generic information about AMRDEC and Redstone Arsenal; which didn’t induce a lot of cadets to volunteer.  An exciting engineering job description enhances the chance a cadet may choose Redstone from their many choices.

Please take a look at the attached information and give either Marty Eaton or I a call and we can provide further assistance.  Please also forward us any job descriptions, the sooner the better, but hopefully prior to 4 December.

Jobs should be about three weeks in duration and provide the cadets the opportunity to conduct actual engineering.  Note the flier primarily mentions “systems engineering” but any type engineering can be proposed.

Army – Air Force Game watch

It was a dead heat!  a total of 28 votes – each location getting 14.

Since we have already agreed with the Navy to be at Jones Valley for the Army – Navy Game, we will muster at the Buffalo Wild Wings at Madison Mall this Saturday afternoon.  The kick off is at 1430 hours —-Which is the same time as the Alabama – LSU game.  This means the facility will be crowded.  I am requesting that those who voted for the Madison location, please try and arrive early enough to lock in a location – It looks like we need room for at least 28 folks – the number voting.

August Society Meeting

The monthly Society meeting for August will be on Thursday, 27 August at 1730 hours in the Howell Room of the ROCC.  This is our annual get together prior to the football season, gives me a chance to bring everyone update on what is happening with WPAOG, and allows us to make plans for the remainder of the year.

There will be an open bar from 1730 to 1830 or so.  (The Society picks up the tab.)  Plan to met your spouse and have dinner at the Club.  It is the Quarterly Birthday Night with a buffet from 1800 – 2000 hours.  The band  Sentimental Journey will be playing from 1900 to 2100.  If your birthday is in July, August, or September tickts are free (assuming you are member) – otherwise the buffet is $15.95.  You can purchase tickets over the phone or stop by the club – to select your seats.

See you then!
