I used to like the open discussion and exchange of ideas, stupid, inane or whatever. When a question was asked , anyone could chime in and try to help without the risk of being called "techno-liter"In the past 6 months, I have lost complete interest in even logging on. I really wasn't interested in seeing members be chastised and reprimanded for being stupid and expressing an opinion that the moderator considered to be technoliter.

We have appreciated being kept up-to-date on the news and happenings at the Academy. We have been able to feel more involved by expanding our level of knowledge about the rules, regulations and traditions that make the Academy such a special place. Also, we have been able to advise others and share with them some of the experiences that we've encountered through our journey. The parent-net has been a great partner and has allowed us to more fully become the "Spirit behind the Corps".

Factual information regarding life at WP and helpful hints for parents and cadets. Especially appreciate bussing and schedualing information. Often we get info before the cadets (at least mine). I appreciate hearing accounts of events like recognition and getting copies of speaches given to the cadets (as in Powell). And even though the list has heard some of these things before I appreciated hearing about tax issues, long underwear, corfam shoes etc. I appreciate hearing the answers to others questions because some of them are mine as well. WPP is a vital link between me and my son and I appreciate it very much!

I think that establishing a new parent-forum is a great idea. We personally love to get lots of email and have felt "let down" lately at the lack of communication from the parents' net. I have been afraid to ask questions, for fear of breaking a rule, and therefore have had some misgivings about the direction that the net has taken. I appreciate all the time and effort that everyone puts in, but do think that some changes were necessary.

I am thrilled to the point of tears to see the formation of this new forum. The discussions during the past week or so have hurt deeply. I feel almost a personal kinship with Dolf and Judy, as well as other parents who post regularly, even though I have never met them. I was shocked when Dolf did not back down, but now I hope I can understand why. This new forum should supply the link that we have wished for, but not at the expense of the ideal Dolf has established. Thank you Diann for being willing to take on this challenge. I hope your daughter knows how lucky she is.

I'm hoping this new service will speak to most of the needed changes. I, like many other parents, became increasingly reluctant to use the net for fear of reprimand or emabarrassment. I would go to any length(make long distance telephone calls, try multiple sources) to avoid asking a question. It rather defeated the original purpose of the net. I was beginning to feel that the net should simply shut down, issue a handbook of FAQ's and send out updates. I think those issues may now be resolved.
Regarding the specific class lists--I think parents of the other classes might be very interested in issues pertaining to firsties--we were told to post questions and information about graduation only to the '99 list. Parents of other classes might learn a great deal by seeing what is happening with graduation--it would help them prepare and plan when their turn comes. I'm sorry they will be excluded--again, they could always use the delete button if they don't care to read graduation information. I was given a copy of '98's graduation week full schedule and found it very useful.

REMINDER OF POLICY VIOLATION, HOWEVER, IN ORDER FOR THE INTERNET COMMUNICATION TO BE SUCCESSFUL THERE IS A FINE LINE WHERE COMMUNICATION COULD GET OUT OF HAND. I FEEL THE MAJORITY WILL CONDUCT THEMSELVES WITH THE APPOPRIATE BEHAVIOR BUT THERE WILL BE A FEW THAT MAY NOT FOLLOW THE NEW RULES. THE ARGUING ON THE NET IS VERY DISTURBING.

I'm very, VERY satisfied with the way Dolf has structured and moderated his lists. I don't want to sacrifice that. I'm a bit concerned that we are now seemingly going to support an opened-ended, much more chattery list and this is distinctly not one that REQUIRES payment.

I don't want the burden of carrying the volume created by that list to cause equipment overload that makes all the rest of the lists suffer from breakdowns in equipment.

I know Dolf gets frutstrated with people who break the rules. It surprises the heck out of me that so many people seem to break the rules, without realizing they are. Maybe the rules are too complicated, but you have to have rules. I don't object to any of the current rules, although I think reminders about the rules need to be a little kinder. I don't like the idea of trying to change some of the most important thing about WPP-Net into "automatic" bulletin boards. The only way that ticket exchanges are going to really work well and the only way ride sharing help is going to be addresssed is if you can send out an email to the group. Relying on a bulletin board is just not going to that helpful to many people.

that membership be strictly open - not based on a monetary subscription. Surely, some families are
penalized for their financial situation. Donations should continue to be asked for; That there be an annual financial accounting of Dolf's academyparents.org; that Dolf be held accountable to the wp-org "board of advisors" for his treatment of members: ie his recent suspension of members that expressed their opinions in desiring change (although warned, they really did not break rules and he provoked the situation) and especially his suspension of the members that *did not post any other messages after his "warnings"*, yet for some unknown reason they too were unsubscribed - including myself and without any knowledge. I only happened to discover it through my contact with other parents that I was not receiving messages. I also had recently paid my second semester subscription fee of $25 of which Dolf was personally aware; that wpp-net and plebe-net postings automatically appear on the parent-forum - don't know if that is possible, but at this point, I would just as soon sever my connection with Dolf;Regular evaluations of all nets and moderators performed by the board of advisors (just as you have arranged this one)

I still think it is difficult for many of us to access the FAQ's through the automated system. (I don't think the majordomo likes me.) But knowing that Dolf is willing to help when we have problems getting the info. on our own, is reassuring. People may need to be reminded that it is okay to ask for that help.

Have people answer directly to the list. When someone asks a question, there are lots of us waiting to hear the answer. It used to come right back for all to read. Now, a question gets asked, and half the time the group doesn't get to see the answer. Nothing is too trivial really.Don't be afraid to appear dense....lots of people have the same questions.

Would like to see a bit more exchange of upperclass ideas on the wpp-net. There are still questions and concerns for cow and firstie parents. It appears that the new wp-org may be of most use to plebe families because of its very open platform. Very much like this new net and thank Dolf for his very understanding attitude toward parents who felt that they had a need to know and share -- despite techno-litter! Thanks for hearing us. After being a member of the new parent-forum list for only a day or two, I feel overhwhelmed by the load of daily e-mail messages. I'm probably going to have to unsubscribe because I just don't have the time to sift through all of the (22 came today--Monday, Feb. 22!!!) e-mails! One can see why some restrictions were needed (by Dolf) to avoid letting the whole situation get out of control. As parents overuse the parent-forum, more and more members will unsubscribe, leaving fewer readers/resources for answering questions, etc.

need to educate themselves on how various lists
work and how to get information. Needs change
over four years and warm-fuzzy chat lines might
be OK in the beginning, but take up a lot of time.
Now that cadets have phones, communicating with
them is a lot more timely and not dependent on
their e-mail. Having a menu of services depending
on need is a great idea.

i'm really confused about the "new" parents-net. i subscribed in 97/98 and was able to share ride info, ticket info, hotel info, etc - all those things our cadets don't quite have all the DETAILS about and some things our cadets don't have the resources for that parents concern themselves with. i moved in the fall of 98 and resubcribed in jan 99 only to find the same "services" not available. for instance, the new policy re rides on the parents-net is that it is the cadet's responsibility. i find as a parent, though, that i can handle carpool arrangements within a 100 mile radius MUCH better that my cadet who has no clue of which road goes where, what's "on the way", etc. when seeking/offering rides. however with the inception of parent-forum, we can now exchange all the info we need to. some things that are not of value to cadets are of value to parents and it's important for us to share as much info with each other as possible. a good example is with plebe parent weekend last year. my cadet had no clue that his teenage sibling could attend the formal - i found that out through other parents on the net. turns out that my daughter and her friend came with us and had a blast. that type of info is invaluable to us as parents and we need a forum (i don't care which one, or what it's called) in which to share it. i appreciate all the work that goes into managing these lists - i never even used e-mail before my cadet went to WPT, so for an "illiterate" like me, this is of real value.

I like the current set up. With parent-forum the parents have more chance to ask their questions and make their comments. With Dolf's lists the factual info is there to retreive instantly and this also has its place and need.By having two such different nets the parents, grads, etc. can take their pick on which one/s to belong to. If you don't want to filter through all of the comments, etc. on parent-forum don't join. Pesonally I hit the delete button alot!!!

All the lists serve a purpose for someone. Each list subcribers can best decide what changes need to be made, BUT the process of making changes needs to be done in a more mature and constructive way that was not shown recently with Dolf's AcademyParents.org/etc subscribers. I guess I am still amazed at the behavior of so many "adults". Maybe each list can have a "suggestion section" or a comment box, Maybe surveys done on a regularly basis with the results printed for that list's subscribers.

The new parent-forum list: redundant info that clutters my screen. Needs to be better moderated or explained. May take time!

We tried to let him know what we wanted, but he seemed very set in his ways and closed a wall around him. We are very happy with the new Parent Forum that has been set up and the warm fuzzies it gives us all when we are so far away from our cadet and what is going on at West Point. Thank you Dian and Joannie.

I think that the parent forum has filled the gap for allowing folks to ask questions, express feelings, etc...I just wish Dolf could have been as user friendly as Dian and Joannie seem to be... An example of this is when Dian posted a curtly worded post recently, Dian came on later and apologized , explaining her reasoning,(saying she was tired and rushed when she wrote it,etc) and by doing this, she made the rest of us feel that we were friends, not adversaries, and that we were all adults...In contrast, Dolf would come on the net and chastise and threaten to unsubscribe us because someone voiced an opinion that was not the same as his, said something that he considered "babble", or broke one of the many many rules unintentionally...We are all adults and would like to be treated as such ...The old saying that you get more with honey than with vinegar says it all.

That most folks do not realize that the list are not official from West Point and possibly could be given incorrect information from a well meaning parent. Although most of the information is 98% accurate, things never stay the same and parents should always check with USMA or their cadets as far as dates.USMA has a FREE Listserver which only posts messages but it is the OFFICIAL listserver from West Point. I think people are extremely confused now

Keep up the excellent work at WP-ORG. We rely on it for factual information. Dolf and WPP-net should not be discouraged or chagrined by the start-up of parent-forum. It should indeed be a RELIEF from the burden of WPP-net and Dolf being targets for some parents' anxiety and lack of information about their cadets' activities.

By spawning parent-forum as a COMPLEMENT to WPP-net, it should make WPP-net easier and more fun to moderate due to not having as many techo-litter generators feeling a need to contact Dolf to vent. At the same time, there was obviously a pent-up demand for a more free-wheeling open forum for parents to "chat". So parent-forum will be a great place for that to occur without having WPP-net involved with the chat aspect. It seems like a viable arrangement, they are both valuable in different ways.

Thanks again to everyone who is involved. We truly appreciate your efforts.

I think there is a place for both lists. Dolph has done a great job and the information he posts is always relevant. Several times I have had to mail him directly to ask advice and he always been unfailingly patient and polite, not to mention knowledgeable.

The new list serves a purpose and I find I read many of the messges. I would like to see less personal information about cadets etc on it. Good forum however to get info about ride sharing etc. WP seems to have so many rules it is difficult for most parents to keep up with them all. I find my cadet is often simply too busy and overwhelmed to get all of the info he needs all the time and if I can offer a suggestion he usually appreciates it. I think the FAQ's are good, although I often forget how to get there and need to be reminded!

The new parent-forum is fun. The wpp-net, plebe-net, etc is factual. Both serve very useful functions in keeping us informed and connected to our cadet. Although there has been recent (unpleasant) unrest in the WP internet community, we believe the outcome of the conflict has improved the overall system. Two incongruent needs (emotional support vs facts) could not be met with the same forum/list - the turmoil uncovered the inconsistency & the WP parents created a wonderful solution. Life goes on.... Dolf, you are providing a necessary & appreciated service.

I have no problems with the way things were done in the past. I appreciate Dolf's time and effort. I fully understand the frustrations of dealing with a diverse group of people. I guess the saying is true "No good job ever goes unpunished." We enjoy plebe-net and wpp-net. We have also gotten some enjoyment from parent-forum but may unsubscribe if the mail volume and lack of real content doesn't change. Without getting too wordy - I spent some time in a copper smelter. In those terms the information on plebe-net and wpp-net is what we would call "concentrate" - much of the needed product and little waste. Parent forum is raw ore - you have to throw away a lot of junk to get to the nuggets. We realize that the "concentrate" is the result of Dolf (and I suppose others) doing the sorting and disciplining the list. We do appreciate the effort and I think there are lots of us out here. We just tend to be "lurkers" and don't always have to have our say. Don't give up on us Dolf.

Lighten up on the rules. The rules are not as im-
portant as the free flow of information. Members do not need umpteen different places to go to either get the information that they need or post the question that they need answered. These early days of the parent-forum have had a good number of useless (to me) posts. I've deleted them and the number of them decreases with every day. Let them say what they will and throw it away. I'm sure that there are very few of us who don't appreciate the time and effort that Dolf has put into this endeavor. Strict rules with strict enforcement is at the center of the 'debate'. It's my opinion that they should be considerably loosened.

Perhaps some type of calendar/chronology postings on a monthly or seasonal basis. A listing of pertinent (and anticipatory) files/calendars so that members access these before posting. Example: Sept. postings would include football news, fall bus schedules, PPW handbook, long john info, etc. I know it's done now on an occasional basis, but it would be helpful if this were better organized on a set schedule. Members would begin to know when and where to find things --- all timely info released on a regular date each month and/or season.

I understand both sides of this - those wanting to talk, vent, need help and those of you wanting to keep the amount of mail down. You would almost have to come together and get your differences out in the open-in person-to understand what you both need and would like to see happen. I'm not complaining - just watching from the sidelines.

We like what is on the WPP-Net web site, and fully understand that it is not any easy task sorting through what should or should not be allowed onto the web site. Since the addition of the parents web site there have been a huge amount of questions by parents seeking information about various topics and I think that that is good. I can also see Dolf's problem as to what should be aired. I think that both web sites can be beneficial to all of us who have cadets at West Point. Dolf's site becoming a more informational type of a site and the parents more of a question and answer type site.

There seems to be a fine line between a free and open exhange of information and "techno-litter." I think that if parents want a chat line type of atmosphere, perhaps the new parents-forum is just the thing. I have been amazed and sometimes a bit dismayed in the last few days with the sheer volumn of traffic generated by the parent-forum.

Perhaps this is not the appropriate column of the survey in which to place the following thoughts, but feel that I must get them out to someone.

First, I think Dolf and Judy are doing a fantastic job and I had little to no disagreement with the way the net was being administered. Perhaps there was occasionally a little too strict enforcement of the rules, but without rules we have anarchy.

Perhaps as a career officer who is the son of a career officer and married to the daughter of a career officer, there are many things that we take for granted regarding USMA, the military, and family separations and careers in the military. If the parents of my soldiers bombarded me with the requests for minute information that I have seen on the list, I would not be able to execute my unit's military mission. These Cadets are members of the United States Army just as much as if they had gone down to the local recruiter and gone to basic training at Ft Benning. They are adults and are treated by the Army (and the IRS) as adults. Their duty to the Army is to prepare themselves over the four year period to be leaders of soldiers. Upon commissioning, they will go where the Army needs them. I am very sorry if that is not near your hometown, but the National Command Authority (President) has decided that we will have a military presence around the world, sometimes in remote or dangerous places. Also, military installations are scattered around the country and all of them need bright, motivated young officers (West Point grads???).

Do we need a forum for those parents who can not accept the fact that their child is now an adult and training to lead American soldiers into harm's way? Probably, but do not clutter up an information source that puts out timely, accurate information regarding happenings at the Academy. have a separate list as has apparently now been done. Dolf, keep it up and when I need information, I know I can count on you to provide it. If I want to hear about corfam shoes or lamentations because some Cadet has not written home or the ICQ went down for 24 hours, then I will read the stuff on parents forum.

Thanks for letting me get this off my chest.

A well-designed, key-word searchable web site with calendars, schedules, FAQ-style info is what is needed. An aggressively open and tolerant parents chat room (a la AOL) is preferable to the listserver -- outdated technology. I have no suggestions for changes. I think everyone is doing a great job. I give Dolf a lot of credit for this great asset. I think he was right about knocking the ride and ticket requests off of the parents net. That was truly aggravating. We don't live close enough to West Point to be able to use sporting event tickets. Concerning the "share the ride" aggravations, when I was in the service, I took care of my transportation requirements, or I just flat didn't go. My mommy and daddy stayed out of my business. These parents ought to let their children grow up. On the other hand, I didn't want anyone to feel hesitant about posting messages. I just made it a personal rule to ask Dolf before posting, and twice, he saved me from embarrassing myself, and my daughter. He was patient, helpful, and he answered my email in a timely manner.

I think that both organizations serve different needs and that both are needed. Dolf's forum is more structured, provides more direct detailed information, requires more dicipline, more professionalism, more restraint, but it addresses important needs. The parent-forum is needed to address the emotional needs of the parents and provides a more relaxed and comfortable forum for asking all kinds of questions some of which would be classified as silly, trivial or redundant but serve a basic need for those who ask them. I think we now have a opportunity to serve the needs of all, which in realty the best forum and one which our membership will be willing to support. It is my feeling that if we lose either forum this organization will suffer. I think Dolf caught a lot of criticism for being too tough only because there was not a forum for people to address their emotional needs. Most people understand the need for rules and discipline but when you have emotional needs that aren't being met, it is difficult to think past them.

We prefer to stay on the higher road and subscibe to Dolf's lists. I would like to see the parent-forum stay as it is, make sure Dolf keeps out of it with his one way attitude. We as parents needs other parents comments or help regarding issues that are pertaining to or related to West Point (our kids). I never seen anything on the WPP-net that did not pertain to our kids at West Point. The only thing I see is that could be out of the ordinary was the selling of football tickets or anything that pertained to that (kinda one way, ain't it?

Dolf, deserved all the grief he/her got. As he/her should look back at the email when he/her stated that he/her wanted to see by his comment what would happen. Well you pissed a lot of people off is what happened telling them what they can or can not discuss on the wpp-net. It was I thought designed to help parents discuss issues or find out things that are happening with their kids/young adults at West Point. I thought that that was being accomplished until Dolf decided for some reason that the so called chat/tech-no-liter was to much.
I am a systems manager for a large company and I stayed out of the heated discussion/comments that was going on. But now that this survey has brought my thought back I would like to really express my opion. I seen nothing that was out of the realm of West Point conversation, and seen no reason for Dolf to take the stand that he did, if any one should be disbared it should be Dolf. The only thing I think Dolf does not understand is the meaning of e-mail/chat/tech-no-liter.
To me all these things mean the same except tech-no-liter which is pesty sales people tring to get you to buy this or that, XXX site advertisement, or any other advertisement that is trying to sell you something. (I never seen this come over the net, as Dolf has said).
As far as a chat box, what do you think e-mail is? Another form of chat, except the delay for response is longer than a conversation.
If a membership is what it takes to be apart of wpp-net then I and all the members should have a vote on what can or can not be discussed on the wpp-net not just Dolf (or any single body).

The parent-forum which I did not ask to be on is terrible. I find it almost embarassing to read the public airing of frustration by many parents who
publish how often their son or daughter calls, writes or emails (it seems it is never enough for
them). I believe if I ever did that to my son when he was in college it would have ruined a relationship. Imagine if your own parents had a
public forum when you were in your late teens and early 20's -- Johnny's mom would be jealous of
Joey's mom because Joey wrote every day, called
every weekend, etc. These are young men and women
and need to have some dignity and not have details
about them posted for anyone to see.

Now that we have the parent-forum, I am happy, I think I can find what I really need somewhere. I did not like the chastisements found on the Wpp-net----they were more bothersome than deleting something I didn't want to read. Good SUBJECT lines are a real help.

Kick the Parent-Forum off the WPP-Net and let them set-up and maintain their own list server.
If they are going to use the WPP-Net equipment, they should pay their share.

I think the new parent forum is a good addition (for those who like the direct internet communication). I would hate to see it completely replace the other lists. I suspect that I will unsubscribe from parent-forum before long - not because I don't like it - it's great, but because the "chat line" volume is just too heavy for me. The more "controlled" information sources are much more appropriate for my purposes.

Didn't appreciate Dolf's pressure tactics to get contributions. Dolf should stop the whining about techno-litter.

I think by forming this new web site, parent-forum, has addressed the concerns and needs of parents of cadets. So far, so good.

Dolf fails in the mission to **share** info. If he does not feel it is relevent it will not be shared due to his intimidation of the members. The net is not at all user friendly - from the standpoint of parents attempting to get information to the simple administration. Having experienced the parent-forum for a week I now see a far more positive experience. I do not see what value Dolf's nets contribute to the parents. I get messages concerning bus schedules, etc., 2 hrs prior to Dolf simply attaching an intro to the original message. Why not let the originator send directly to the parents (parent-forum) and thus eliminate Dolf's own version of **techno-litter**?

Parents must ignore and/or delete info when it is given instead of creating a folder in which to file it for future reference. The SAME questions are asked not only years or even months apart but days apart. It is frustrating to receive so much repetitive mail, especially, if someone is trying to use a workplace e-mail address to stay informed. Major domo is the place to find answers for FAQs without sending messages to the entire list.

I couldn't unsubscribe to the parent-forum quick enough. It's very important to me to be aware of WP schedules and news, (actually my son depends on me for some WP information), but I found the numerous e-mails of such a petty nature to be disappointing and irritating.

I think there is a place for wpp-net, plebe-net and the parent forum. They all offer a diversity of ways to get information. We hope that the wpp-net and plebe-net will continue as clear and direct methods!

I love the infomation that is put out by Ann Bray and the very interesting articles written by Allen Borack. It is nice to hear first hand about the happenings at WP. I know Allen is really busy, but more of his insight would be a great enjoyment.

The only thing that I have trouble with is working the system. I'm not very computer literate(savvy)and how one gets info gets to be an endless hours of pushing buttons and nothing happening. However, I will continue to work and learn. I like those nets that send me know.

A little less back-biting, please. We are all in this together. People have all different experiences and backgrounds and what one person views as stupid, another parent sees as having in common. I am against the public hand-slapping and the public statements about questions being stupid. There is room for both comm vehicles.

I wouldl like to request the members of the net to limit their messages so as not to clogged the net with all these litters that sometimes can be redundant and repetitive.

Let us be adults. We all make mistakes from time to time. We also appreciate the enormous amount of time it must take to manage a net. I am appreciative of the efforts and hope my help in the local WPParents Club will payback someone for the time expended by the list managers.
