Top Things You Need To Do Before Your Son or Daughter Enters West Point

R-Day thru A-Day

1.

Encourage your soon to be “New Cadet” to continue his/her Conditioning Program (if for no other reason to break-in new running shoes).

2.

Pack for the Academy Trip (purchase Boots and low quarters and break them in!). You can also get boots at the Academy on R-day where they will be charged to your Cadet’s account.

3.

Make Lodging Reservations for R-Day (June 29, 2009). For a list of area hotels/motels visit:

                http://www.west-point.org/parent/wppc-st_louis/IHotels.htm

4.

5.

Make Lodging Reservations for Plebe Parent Weekend (March 12-14, 2009)

6.

Make Hotel Thayer Reservations for Class of 2013 Graduation Week (no kidding)

Hotel Thayer begins taking Reservations R-Day (June 29, 2009) at 0900.

You must call ASAP to secure rooms for your Class’ Graduation Week!

Don’t worry you can cancel your reservation at any time in the future; someone will be there to take it!

7.

Join the West Point Parents Club of St. Louis – meet with other cadet & grad parents

8.

Purchase Class of 2013 T-Shirts and Tote Bags at the Visitor’s Center (Eisenhower Hall) on R-Day

These items usually sell out quickly, so make this a priority.  The Academy usually will take “back up” orders, which take several weeks for delivery.  Class Parkas may be purchased at the Cadet Store.

9.

**

Obtain your New Cadet’s full address on R-Day. There will be tables for this purpose** set up in Eisenhower Hall. Three things to know about New Cadet Barracks mail:

Be sure to address it to “New Cadet”

                NO PACKAGES can be sent

Use only generic envelopes (no perfume).

Write early and often, it really helps the morale of your New Cadet. All messages should be positive and they should not say "the family is having a great time over the summer and we wish you were here." This could make some kids more home sick.

10.

Read “The West Point Candidate Book” – gives an idea of most requirements for a cadet

Read “Absolutely American” – a journalist was embedded at West Point for 4 years 2000-2004

Read “The Unforgiving Minute” – written by Craig Mullaney Class of 2000
