CLASS OF 2006

“NEVER FALTER NEVER QUIT”

Carl Fisher: Carl continues to enjoy West Point.  He stays busy (surprise, surprise) with studies, military activities, and tennis.

He recently completed the winter tennis season.  Highlights of the season included breaking in a new coach (the old one who recruited him retired in August) and playing an invitational at Flushing Meadows, site of the U.S. Open.

He won plebe Soldier of the Quarter for the brigade and was selected as a battalion commander for PPW.

We took the other five kids to PPW.  It was the first time to fly for three of them.  The five & six year olds loved the televisions on Jet Blue.  We enjoyed every minute with Carl at PPW.  We got to eat lunch in Washington Hall, see his barrack room, meet the TAC officer and other plebes in the company, meet his sponsor family, and attend Chapel with him on Sunday.  Susan and Kennedy enjoyed the opportunity to sing in the Chapel choir.  Our five-year-old daughter thought she was Cinderella at the ball and got to dance with her prince, Cadet Fisher.

We enjoyed spending time with the Greens and seeing the McCormicks, and Cleeks.  We especially appreciate the attempt of the Cleeks to get us lost on the way back to JFK.  We managed to find our way in spite of their directions.

James (Jimmy) McCormick: What a great month this has been to us. The first weekend in October, Jim was able to meet Jimmy and some of Jimmy’s old friends from Massachusetts for dinner. Jim was up in Rhode Island for reserves and Jimmy was in Boston participating in Habitat for humanity. The following weekend was Jim’s 20th class USMA reunion. Jimmy was able to get a special pass (RHIP) and spend part of the weekend with us. What a blast.  Jim’s classmates were so excited to hear that one of their own had a son at the Point. Actually six or seven guys from 2002 have cadets at West Point. What they couldn’t believe was that it was Jim’s son. If you don’t know Jim he was very laid back and always-in trouble. Or as one of his roommates put it, “you were the most un-military cadet I ever met and now your son is at West Point?  I think the best part of the weekend was the football game in the rain. After the third quarter Jim really got into the game. Actually he was quit entertaining to the people around us and to our son. Soon Jimmy followed suit. Jim then explained that Jimmy needs to relax and learn to have fun. I think it is finally beginning to sink in.  Our third weekend was PPW. I was thrilled that both of my men wore their uniforms, of course Jim was in the Blues his father got when he was

Commissioned as a 2LT in 1960 they are just a little TIGHT. Jimmy had a “date”; he invited an old friend down to the Hop. Another great weekend.

Jimmy is also doing well on the marathon team. His first marathon will be in Philly the week before Thanksgiving. The coaches are also talking about having the marathon team run the football down to the stadium for the Army-Navy game. That could be fun, maybe he will make the pre-game show…Jimmy says the Corps is excited (NOT!), this could be the first 0-13 team ever in Academy history. Beat Navy!

For entertainment, or cookies, Jimmy volunteered to teach CCD for the catholic chapel on Sunday morning. He says it reminds him of his little buddy Mitchell and he seems to enjoy teaching CCD classes. Overall I would say he is starting to adapt to his new way of life although he still hates Sunday nights…six bells and all that….

Matthew Green: It was great to see Matt at Plebe Parent Weekend.  His first comment when meeting his parents was "what did you bring me".  He was looking for junk food.  He was happy to be M.O.S., Member of Squad.  It was really something to see his clean room and his million-dollar view of the Hudson and Garrison.  His room is the warm weather room, as his roommates are from Miami and Guam.  He was head user at the Cadet Chapel
for PPW, and had lots of advice from his brother (the regular head usher).  He is really looking forward to coming home for Thanksgiving.  He is anxious to get back to warm weather and drive his 66 Mustang convertible.
