CLASS OF 2003
“PROTECTOR
OF THE FREE”
Kevin Manley: Kevin
Left West Point before graduation to attend the Sapper Leader Course in
Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. He spent his first month of the summer there
and he and we are very proud that he graduated from that prestigious
Engineer Leader Course. He then had a whole three days off before
returning to West Point as a Platoon Leader at Buckner. He is
looking forward to Ring Weekend to be attended by his parents and
girlfriend, and the Firstie Year, when he will be removed form his company
serving as the Third Regiment Honor Representative.
Whitney P. Hall: Whitney is
busy right now as the Quartermaster for Beast. She complains of the
long hours (5:30 to 10:00 at night) and that she is doing the work of a
Captain or Major and not getting paid for it. As she says, “I’m
responsible for several million dollars worth of stuff and I’m afraid
I’m going to loose some of the stuff and no one told me what I need to
do.” She started this assignment July 5th after getting back from
Ft. Bragg in North Carolina where she spent a month working with an
engineering company. The company had just come back from a brief
tour in Honduras and they are now getting ready to go to Afghanistan.
Of course while she was with them they started a small forest fire with a
Starburst which required another company’s help to put out. (I
think it sounds like they need a little more training.) She really
had a great time and I was able to spend the Father’s Day weekend with
her and her grandmother who came over from Franklin. Right now she
is in the throws of trying to make up her mind as to which branch she
wants to go for. Not sure where she will end up but then again
neither does she. Other than these tribulations of life in the
military she is doing fine and loving it.
Whitney
reported for duty at Ft. Bragg, NC on June 3 with an aviation company.
She had an all-female chain of command, which is quite unusual. She
and another female cadet roomed together at the Best Western Motel on
I-95. She was very grateful to have a car to drive the 10 miles to
and from the base. July 3 she left NC, headed to Delaware where
Uncle Jack and his family entertained her briefly before reporting to Camp
Buckner on July 5 for the Rest of summer “vacation!”
She is Supply guru (unsure of job title) for the battalion command. She finally called July 14 while doing laundry at Major Seibert’s house. Her assistant Zack was “guarding the ammo” which she has been sleeping on since July 5. Her detail is very intense, 20-hour days, lots of responsibility and we hope it goes well. I suspect she’s looking forward to reorgie week and a bed to sleep in for more than 4 hours per night.
(2003
Cont.)
I
did tell her that Dick Hull mentioned she should be planning her 60-day
leave after graduation May 31, 2003. Maybe visualizing that time
will help her through this, her second tour at Buckner!
Josh
Southworth: We are enjoying spending some time with Josh prior to his
Firstie year. It has been a long time since we have spent so much
time together! We love it! Josh finished ADA in El Paso, and
has been able to enjoy the new sights of Tampa. For the first time
during any summer, he has been able to do fun things with his friends, and
flew to Pennsylvania to go to ‘Jamboree in the Hills’ with them seeing
lots of country- western singers. Like all Firsties, Josh is eagerly
anticipating the coming year!
CLASS OF 2004
“FOR
COUNTRY AND CORPS”
Jennifer
Barrow: Jennifer will carry the
fond memories of the West Point Spanish Class trip to Mexico with her the
rest of her life. There were
the friends she made among the Mexican cadets (one of whom may soon visit
West Point), the embassy Marine party, the Aztec ruins and Tenochtitlan,
among so many other experiences.
Knowing
that as a Beast counselor she wouldn’t make it home this summer, we
visited her at West Point. They
finally let her off base on her birthday, so we celebrated that, and her
counselor certification earlier that morning, by going out to dinner.
We dropped her off the next day just in time for her to give a talk
on stress management, which so impressed a classmate that HE sought her
counseling. Things must have
gone fairly well after that, because she got an “A” for first detail.
She
said she is actually excited about doing the 12 and 15-mile road marches
again. She is probably eager
to show the more apprehensive new cadets that if a little girl like her
can not only do the march, but also do it with a smile, then they’ll
make it too.
Micah Green: Micah enjoyed his time doing CTLT at Fort Campbell in June. He worked with Combat Engineers with the 101st Airborne doing mostly night maneuvers. When we learned that his brother had gotten a last minute appointment he was in the field and we were unable to reach him. Finally, he called home just 3 days before we had to leave for R-day. He was so excited to have his brother coming to USMA. After CTLT, Micah reported to Fort Buckner to be a platoon sergeant. We spent the week after R-day in the area so we were able to pick him up at the airport and spend the day with him before he had to report to Buckner.
