Calculus validated my first year of math and will be taking next year’s  math, which is a good thing; the afternoon at the sponsor’s was great; am probably going to take Chinese this year and next year because I listed it as a minor; I qualified with the M-16 and “can’t wait to see family on Acceptance Day!”

MATTHEW RASKIE: No news received.

SKIP RIDDLE: Skip is extremely happy Beast is almost over.  He enjoyed mountaineering, hated the gas chamber, but over all said each day he gets through he feels a little stronger.  He is looking forward to Baseball and Labor Day weekend.  He really likes his room mate and his Company.

JASON RUSH: Jason seems to be settling in and even having some fun!  After reporting home about sore muscles and loss of voice, he later raves about the two hours of freedom during Chaplin’s time, his visits to the Cadet Store for “boodle”, and the wonderful surprise meal of steak, lobster tails, and Caesar salad.   The challenge to be the best company keeps him motivated throughout even one of the roughest weeks of mountaineering, NBC, and a road march in the rain.  Jason enjoys the teamwork, comradely, and pranks.  He writes: “We stole Bravo Company’s bull horns.  Bravo thinks a plebe in my platoon named Andrew Chung has a ‘sacred’ artillery round; it really belongs to an upper classman in my Company and Bravo wants to take it.  So we put Chung’s nameplate on every door in the entire barracks.  They’re going to be confused as all (you know what) when they come looking.”  Also, do you remember the bleachers at the parade field that say ARMY BEAT NAVY?  Well, we changed it to say ARMY DELTA DOG!!  At the awards ceremony for the regiment, D Company did win Best Company, also Best at First Aid site, Best at Mountaineering, and “almost” Best Company at NCR site.  Jason’s cadre rewarded them with a surprise pizza party.  He was very impressed with the Center for Enhanced Performance (mind therapy and stress relief) and enjoyed cheering at a preliminary Olympic volleyball match between the USA and Bulgaria (USA won)!

ADAM SMOOT: Adam had a lot of fun in the Mountaineering training, but when it came to the gas chamber he said it was the most painful thing he has ever felt in his entire life.  But, he said when he looks back on the experience of being gassed, he felt it

was cool to be able to say “I did it”.  Adam is walking on for the football team, so he was excited about already getting their pads and cleats.  Last week he was very excited about “launching a hand grenade”, and looking forward to qualifying with the M-16.

MARK SWANSON:  No news received.

PREP SCHOOL

KARL DAVIS: No news received.

MICHAEL SMOOT: Michael is Adam’s identical twin brother and is at the USMA Prep. School at Ft. Monmouth, NJ.  He is also having the time of his life.  He says the food is good, and he is looking forward to  going to Ft. Dix to learn and qualify on the M-16 rifle.  He was very excited, because their class was the first to fire live ammo.  Michael is also starting football practice at USMAPS.
