Driving Directions to and from Newark International Airport

TO NEWARK AIRPORT FROM WEST POINT

Depart USMA through Thayer Gate into Highland Falls.

Continue South past the visitors center and the motels until you join Hwy 9W going South into Fort Montgomery.

Continue on Hwy 9W to the Bear Mountain Bridge Traffic Circle. Just before the circle there is a cutoff to the right onto the Palisades Interstate Pkwy. Take that road toward New York City.

Continue on Palisades Interstate Pkwy to Exit 9W, which is the New York Thruway (Interstate 87) heading North towards Albany.

Continue on the NY Thruway for approx. 3 exits until you see the entrance to the Garden State Pkwy. Take that exit to the right that swings around, crosses over the Thruway, and heads South.

Follow the Garden State Parkway to Exit 42. At that exit you will see signage indicating you must exit to get to the Newark Airport. Exit at Exit 42, pay the toll, and continue on the next freeway, Interstate 78, heading away from Newark (West).

Exit I-78 at the next exit 50-A (I believe it is Union Avenue). Follow the exit 50-A around and over the Interstate and immediately turn right on the frontage road alongside the Interstate.

Proceed along the frontage road for about 500 yards to the entrance to I-78 heading back to Newark. Enter the Interstate heading East towards Newark.

Exit 57 off this Interstate is the entrance to Newark Airport.

Travel time is approximately 1 hr. 20 min., door to door.

You currently will pass through two 35 cent tolls and one 70 cent toll booth.

TO WEST POINT FROM NEWARK AIRPORT

Exit the airport and follow the signs to the "Garden State Parkway." The sign has a round green and yellow logo on it that indicates this road.

Take the Garden State Parkway North.

You will pass through three toll booths going north on this road--first toll 70 cents and 35 cents each for the other two.

Continue north to the end of the Garden State Parkway. The road continues into New York State and becomes a leg of the New York Thruway.

About 3 to 4 miles after entering New York State, you will come to I-87 and you will need to take I-87 South (towards New York City and the Tappan Zee Bridge).

Proceed along I-87 South for two exits to the Palisades Interstate Parkway North, Exit 13N. Take this and you will be heading North towards the end of the Palisades Interstate Parkway at the Bear Mountain Bridge traffic circle.

Once at the Bear Mountain Bridge traffic circle, follow the signs to West Point. Don't cross the Bear Mountain Bridge. Go around the traffic circle, about 3/4 of the way and take Highway 9W towards West Point. It's only about 10 minutes from the bridge traffic circle.

Total driving time is about 1 1/4 hours from Newark Airport to West Point Thayer Gate.
