The author is a survivor of WWII Japanese concentration camps for women and children on the island of Java in the Dutch East Indies. In her words: My mother and little sister, incarcerated with me, also survived. My sister died on April 5, 2011. My mother lived to be a centenarian in reasonably good health and passed away on November 22, 2011. My father, a pilot with the Dutch Naval Air force, escaped with his squadron just before the Japanese conquered our island and served with the Allied Forces in Ceylon. He passed on at the age of 85 in 1998.

Rising from the Shadow of the Sun is a fascinating chronicle based on the detailed diary of Netty Herman, a courageous Dutch mother, who records the horrors and desperation of life with her two young daughters, Ronny and Paula, in World War II Japanese concentration camps for women and children on Java; and the inspiring story of Ronny's journey from a childhood in captivity in Southeast Asia in the 1940s to peace and prosperity in the United States in the 21st century.
