It proved to be an interesting day with nice weather and easy cycling. The first noticeable item was the houses along the road side. Primarily, they were ranch style houses on well maintained lots but peculiar to the eye was that in each yard there was a sign saying "We stand for" and this was followed by a listing of the Ten Commandments. It seemed unusual to come across this in this area as usually the Bible Belt is considered to be located more to the South. The reason that this is found in this area may have a lot to do with the events that have been taking place in Southwestern Ohio primarily in Cincinnatti. Remember that Jerry Springer was once mayor of the city and there were several court confrontations brought about by exhibits that were promoted by the NEA and were considered to be pornographic. In fact, there is a trial beginning this week with Larry Flynt and his son being charged with selling pornographic material to a 14 years old minor. In other words, the Bible Belt is definitely very wide and very tight across this area of Ohio. As the two lane road proceeded, the road side became the location of many different areas of the ancient Indian Burial Mounds. Not being a native Ohioan, I am not too familiar with the History of these historic locations but do know they are renowned around the world and do provide some beautiful and interesting places to visit. Next came an area along the way that found well kept farm lands. In one field, was seen a plow being pulled by four horses and driven by an Amish farmer. There were also four children seen in this area. Three of them were young men attired in white shirts with black trousers and suspenders while the fourth was a young girl dressed in a plain black dress wearing a bonnet. Then came the town of Cynthiana which proved to be the center of a local Amish community made up of about 45 families. J.R.'s General Store was located in the center of town and demanded a visit. The store was strictly a typical old fashioned general store. Everything was neatly arranged and the entire premises was clean and well maintained. Speaking with one of the locals, it was found that the group had moved from the Lancaster, PA area in search of some land at a reasonable price. Hence this community. In Bainbridge was found the Timbers restaurant which received a rating of 7 out of 10. The presence of home cooked items on the menu was still a prevalent factor as has been the case along the way. Arrived in Chillicothe and are looking forward to heading on to Zanesville on Tuesday. It became what the cyclist referred to as "grinders and rollers". It was explained to me that this meant a lot of hard peddling uphill and then coasting downhill but not gaining enough momentum to carry very far up the next hill. It was interesting to come across statues to 2 Civil War generals in this area. First in the town of Lancaster, OH was a statue of General Sherman well known for his burning of Atlanta. Next came a statue of General Sheridan located in the village square in the center of Somerset. The narrow two lane road provided the most abundant supply of road kill found anywhere to this point. There were multitudes of opossum and raccoon carcasses interspersed every now and then with a skunk. It did require paying attention in order to avoid hitting one and having a spill. Dusty had his seventh flat and I questioned if he was using material obtained from NASA. He did order new tires and they were delivered to me today and Dusty will get them upon their arrival tomorrow. Not mentioned before but Will had left the group at West Union and headed north where he met a friend and spent the night. He rejoined the group in Zanesville last night. Wednesday would be Zanesville to Canton. Larry *** USMA1959 post by: WALSH James E Jr 1959 22524 A1 __________________________________________________________________ Need a book?
