Got a call from PWS before they left Wheatley this morning. There is an attached message from Jack Stanley with this sitrep. The picture is not attached but has been sent to Frank Campbell and will be able to be found on the Class Homepage after the weekend. PWS confirmed the enjoyable evening with Roselyn and Jack. They went out for dinner and then visited with the Stanleys at home where facilities were provided for getting laundry done and using a scale for a weight check. Acording to all involved, PWS has gained some weight all the way around since leaving the Larsens. I personally question the accuracy of this report about the weight because Jack even admitted that he was too short for his weight as displayed on the scale. Leaving Little Rock provided quite a view with great diversity. The state capital building resembles our national capitol bulding in D.C. and is visible for quite a distance while departing the downtown area. There are a few tall buildings in the downtown but you quickly enter areas that are rather squalid. The actual comment was that they were glad to be able to pass through that area of town and not have to do it in the evening or after dark. Out on the road again was the beginning of a new experience. They thought there had been many churches along the earlier leg but discovered a major miscalculation had been made. Not only were the churches numerous but it was hard to comprehend how many various Baptist denominations could be represented in such a short length of road. The scenery was beautiful with many flowering plants providing not only a view but a very delightful fragrance. Everything was green as a result of the rains which had preceded them here. They were in what could be classified as bayou country with flat roads and a stinking little pesky head wind. Road kill became quite an interesting point. Not only did the quantity increase greatly but the variety of species increased beyond belief. It ran the gamut. Water moccasin, armadillo, skunk, opposum, fox and then the turtles. Turtles ranged from small to medium to large to very large and they were all very very slow or completely immobile from being smashed. Some of this did cause problems because a spill could result from an unexpected bump. There were also many birds of various species adding to the view. Arriving in Carlisle provided the discovery of a place which should not be missed by anyone who happens to pass near this area. Arvada's Cafe is the place and is rated as 5 star by PWS. She opens her doors at 5 AM and closes them at 2 PM. Get there in time and you will be able to enjoy some of the best eating to be found anywhere. Palmer had what he called the "best yams" he had ever tasted. Dusty has been apppointed as judger of desserts and he had a coconut pie which on a scale of 1 to 10 rated a 9. Larry took a few bites and elevated it to a 10!!! Weber must stil be watching his weight. One more interesting aspect of this leg was the agriculture industry along the road. There were multitdes of rice paddies all being cared for mechanically. Not a human being in sight. The silos for storing the harvested crop made the silos of the midwest look puny. Not only were they huge but they were clustered in numbers from four to eight in a group. Quite different from my memories of Korea and I'm sure of many other memories that others have from Viet Nam. The night was spent in Wheatley and an early start was gotten this morning. Larry From: Jack Stanley Subject: PWS Palmer called me Wednesday (4/28) afternoon as they arrived in Little Rock. The trip from Hot Springs reportedly went well. Roselyn and I had supper with them and had a nice visit. It was good to talk with them and learn of their experiences. Larry said he usually sends in a sitrep, so I won't try to duplicate any of that. I have enclosed a picture of the 4 of us on my front porch (l to r)Dusty, Larry, Will, Jack). They are in good spirits and seemingly in good health. They may have gained back some of their lost weight. I admire their accomplishments thus far, their efforts, and as our old TAC (JPK) would say, their "Damned Dogged Determination". Jack
