Saturday, 8/21, leaving Boscobel, WI, the self
proclaimed "Wild Turkey Capital of the World",@ 7:30, on WI 133---temp is
42f.
After a tranquil cruise along the South side of the
Wisconsin River, through Dairy farms, they descend into Lone Rock on a Quiet
Saturday morning. This town is named for the sandstone formation that was
a landmark for barges coming down the river, when it was a main commerce
thoroughfare.
At the WAZ INN, they meet a group having breakfast,
preparing to canoe "downriver" to Muscoda---about 13 miles. They thought
they were adventurers until discussing the "cross-country" bike
trip!
On to Sauk City for a picnic about 1PM where they
encountered two Westbound bikers who were totally unresponsive to any
acknowledgement or exchange of "pleasantries".
At Lodi, a banana split at the DQ, and 4 miles
further on WI 60 to I 90/94 and a Best Western, where Larry impressed Hans and
Inga-Lill by "negotiating the price down from $99/2 to $55! A real
Biker/Geezer discount!
Sunday, 8/22, starting with a rare tailwind and
looking forward to seeing Bill and Allison Zierdt later in the day. After
1/2 hour, Will passes them (he started a "bit" late) in the back of a P/U truck
heading to Columbus---he had broken a crank, and was picked up
immediately.
There was nothing open to help Will on Sunday
morning in Columbus, so he was dropped at US 151. He was immediately
picked up, and one of the "ladies" (Ms Tuchscherer) in the car was
originally from Stockbridge, MA, and they soon discovered that they had "common'
acquaintenances, including Alice and Ray Brock(of Alice's
Restaurant). They dropped Will 2 miles from Zierdts, and Bill
picked him up.
Back to the main party, who took 151 to Columbus,
then on 73 toward Randolph, to avoid traffic. Arriving in Randolph,
they found it was a "Dutch" town, and no businesses were open, so they went on
to WI 68 and Fox Lake/Gary's Grill. Here they met a fellow wearing a
TREK shirt, who knew something about touring bikes,
having been a welder in the TREK plant for many years. He checked over the
equipment, particularly the welds, and gave his approval!
On to Waupun, where they again picked up US 151
toward Fond du Lac, and they encountered road construction---and disaster.
A road construction pavement break flipped Larry and he went down hard. A
van stopped, called 911, and stayed with them until paramedics arrived.
Larry was taken to St Agnes Hosp, and the Swedes were taken to Fond du Lac where
they connected with the Zierdts.
Bill & Will went to the Hospital to see Larry
while he was being checked over, then went to Oshkosh by-gosh, to get the crank
replaced. They returned to St. Agnes just as Larry was being
released---bandaged head (helmet was cracked - requiring purchase of new head
gear), 2 cracked ribs, abrasions on both elbows and both knees, one
knee with 3 stitches!
Back to the Zierdts on Lake Winnebago for a
sumptuous dinner and visit on the lakeshore, and a beautiful sunset. Bill
continues to teach International Business classes.
Monday, 8/23. Bill "carried" Larry and bike to
Manitowoc, while Will, Hans and Inga-Lill biked the 55 miles into a wicked
headwind to meet them, and catch the 1:15 CDT ferry to
Michigan.
The trip (4 hours) across was relaxing, they
changed the watched for the third/last time, and Will enjoyed watching the
"dope sniffing" dog work Larry over, while he (Will) was completely
ignored! PROFILING???
Nel and I met the Badger (ferry) at 6:15(EDT),
and proceeded with the well and wounded to our home for dinner, and a well
needed rest day on Tuesday. Tuesday also included trips to Walgreen's,
a photo shop and some local/easy sightseeing, doing laundry---but mostly food
and rest.
After breakfast this morning(smoked salmon omelets,
buckwheat pancakes and oatmeal), good byes were said and they left in a 70
degree overcast for Evart, MI about 50 miles.
Pictures to follow----Jim
