Classmates, Wives, Widows--
Time to get started. From a recent email:
Tuesday,
11 September, 6:30-8:30 PM, Wounded Warrior Mentor Program New Mentor
Training, mentor training and
refresher training for the Wounded Warrior Mentor Program at Booz Allen,
McLean (Tyson Corner). Contact Lee Miller at cell (240)620.5019 if you have any
questions. The
Mission of the Wounded Warrior Mentor Program (WWMP) is to assist
Wounded/Ill and Injured including Spouses to transition to a new
productive life and profession using education, internships and jobs as
the mantle to accomplish this. The WWMP matches volunteer Mentors with
Wounded/Ill and Injured at Walter Reed NMMC and Ft Belvoir as well as
other locations around the U.S. Scribe's addition -- Lee began
this program and has been involved for many years -- KUDOS to Lee!
Many/most know, especially his cadet company A1, that Lee
recently suffered a stroke. He is doing well, but his left side is
not up to par. He is in a hospital in northern Virginia.
Best wishes to Lee for a speedy recovery.
Began early, but now late -- 30 September. First, must
report another death among our widows: Judy Moore (L2) Schubert died at
her daughter's home in Colorado yesterday morning. This was
reported to
Jack Downing by
Ray Tomlinson. Judy was
Kay Lou Tomlinson's sister. No plans for
internment have been made. You may contact their daugher, Jackie
Bolton, email:
jbolton825@gmail.com
And now a few funerals of classmates. There was one on
Friday 28 Sep at Arlington National Cemetery for Ben
Crosby followed by a reception at Ft Myer Club,
Patton Hall. I attended but have a very sketchy idea of who else was
there. I do know that Tony
& Gay Nadal were there from Williamsburg (a
company-mate of Ben's). I had something to discuss with Tony, but
bear of little brain similar to Winnie-the-Pooh the opportunity was
missed. Bob
Rhodes was there and he brought the class flag.
There was a reception at Ft Myer club afterwards.
From an email by Alan
Salisbury: "As all should know by now,
Pete Brintnall will be buried at Arlington with a
funeral mass at the Old Post Chapel at 10:45 am on Thursday Oct 4th.
With only a 25-minute service, there will be no eulogies or remarks made
at these services. Interment will follow the funeral mass and a
reception at Patton Hall (Ft Myer Officers Club) will follow that.
"The WP Alumni Glee Club will be singing 'Mansions of the Lord' and the
'Alma Mater' at the services, and then additional songs at the
reception. Since Pete was a beloved member of the glee club, there
should be a good turnout on the 4th and you can expect heartfelt singing
in his honor.
"We are unlimited re remarks and eulogies at the reception. This
is a call for anyone who plans on saying a few, or more than a few,
words at the reception to let me know in advance so I can add you to the
list. I understand that
Jack Gordon will be making some remarks as a
stand-in for
Lee Miller who (some of you may not have heard)
recently had a stroke. One of Pete's "mentees" (form the Wounded
Warrior Mentor Program) is also expected to speak. I will be very
flexible, so even if you have not indicated your plans to speak in
advance, you will be given the opportunity if the spirit moves you at
the time. (Added by Scribe: you may contact Alan via phone
703-821-1660 or email AlanBS58@aol.com).
Looking forward to good turnout from '58 for the final roll call for
another of our own."
Next event. There will be a class luncheon at Army-Navy
Club in Arlington at 1130 on Thursday, 18 October. Please let Andy
Andreson
know if you can make it. His email is <randreson@cox.net>.
Partial list of attendees includes (somewhere I will find the list --
not found, sorry about that).
The
new commander in Afghistan is LTG Austin Scott Miller, USMA 1983
(#40473). Scott is connected to myriad grads, including one of our
classmates:
-
he is the grandson of Austin Andrew Miller, USMA 1933 (#9858).
-
he is the son of Austin Eugene Miller, USMA 1957 (#21510).
-
he is the son-in-law of our David G Coury, USMA 1958 (#22132) and Dave's
first wife.
On
Sunday, 2 September, the Washington Post had a long article about Scott:
"The arc of Miller's career reflects the evolution of U.S. Special
Operations in the past quarter century. His actions as a Delta
Force captain are described in the book 'Black Hawk Down,' which details
the Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia... He was wounded in Somalia
and Iraq." No doubt Scott has been promoted by now.
I have more info, but it is late and I will launch this so that
one and all have the information about Pete Brintnall's funeral (4 Oct)
and the class lunch (18 Oct). More later. George as in your
friendly Scribe...
