24 September 2020 Status

Last week I met with our contact at the Higgins Hotel to finalize activities associated with our November 1-3 Mini. We identified location options for various activities and will select based on number of attendees. I would like to be able to select specific location and resource needs to the hotel by October 12th. In order to accomplish this, I ask that all who plan to attend, to include those who have made reservations at the Higgins or advised me they will be staying elsewhere, confirm your attendance to me by October 9th. As of now, there are 24 classmates/widows who have made reservations to attend. The attendance total is 46. I am aware that some of these have indicated they might elect to cancel their reservations. The bottom line is Barbara and I are prepared to host whatever number elects to attend whether that be a majority of the Class or very few. Whoever decides to attend, we guarantee you will "pass a good time". We are very flexible as all must be under the current conditions.

As far as covid19 conditions are concerned, ew Orleans is still in Phase 2 of the recovery even though the remainder of the state is in Phase 3, to include the adjoining Jefferson Parish. In Phase 3 all businesses are allowed to serve 75% of their capacity. Obviously masks and social distancing are required. New Orleans in still in a modified Phase 2 and will remain so  for another week. Our mayor has been very cautious in her approach to "reopening" the city. She has elected to wait until two weeks after schools have been in session in order to judge the impact on covid19 positives to make a decision on entering Phase 3. By November, we will be in Phase 3 or slightly beyond. The main restriction that, no doubt, will be in place is the requirement to mask a social distance when in public places. The Higgins Hotel has accommodate several large groups, 50+, recently with no problem.

The hotel has recently decided to reduce our room rate from $159 plus tax per night to $129 plus tax. For those who have reservations, the hotel will change your rate. For those who have not made reservations and wish to do so use this booking link: http://group.curiocollection.com/WestPoint58 or call 833 357 1172. Earlier I indicated that those attending could get a two day pass to the WW2 Museum for $25 and a ticket for the movie "Beyond All Boundaries for $7. These costs may be charged to your hotel room. For those not staying at the hotel, I will acquire the tickets in advance. As I receive confirmation of your attendance from you I will forward a Mini Registration Form to you.

The Mini Schedule, subject to change, is as follows:

Note: Benny Haven will be open whenever anyone is in the hotel and awake. Depending on final numbers, it will either be in the Eisenhower Suite or the Patriots Circle. The Circle is a superb room, normally available to large donors that he hotel will allow us to use if needed. Check it out at their website.

 Costs, other than your room, close enough for government work, will be;

 Museum/Movie - $32 per person

Class Dinner - $65 per person - will offer a choice of beef/chicken/fish - specifics of dish will be on registration form and I will advise all of menu when developed in final form. I am waiting to receive the info from the hotel

Reception/Benny Havens/ Other - $20+/- depending on final number, donations, etc. Sorry I can not be more specific, but when the attendee number can range from a low of 10  or so to 50+ it is difficult to nail down. But I will get there by 10 October if not before.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

12 August 2020 Status

I met with the Higgins Hotel Staff last week regarding anticipated Mini activities. As I indicated in my last post, the hotel has been able to accommodate several relative large reunion groups with two more planned in September. Again, based on restrictions now and the status of the recovery process in New Orleans, they anticipate significantly better conditions in November. Hotel operations should be back to normal. All of their bars and food service facilities will be available. Masks in public places might still be the norm and some form of social distancing, between tables, in restaurants might still be in place. Although reunion activities are as originally planned, some details might change based on the number of attendees. The staff has been most accommodating. I will meet with the hotel staff on September 14th to make final arrangements based on the number of hotel reservations at the time, including those classmates who have indicated they would attend, but have yet to make reservations. I will have final details, including costs, to everyone by the end of that week.

Regards,
Tom

Planning for the 2020 Class Mini in New Orleans is still in process, but established to the point where you should make both travel and hotel reservations.  As we did when the Class gathered in New Orleans in 2007, regular updates will be provided via reunion58@west-point.org. The following is provided to assist you in your personal planning process.

REUNION DATES - November 1 - 4, 2020 - Arrive on November 1st and depart on November 4th. You will note that hotel reunion rates are available both 3 days before and after the reunion dates.

LOCATION - Higgins Hotel. 1000 Magazine Street, New Orleans, LA 70130 - The room rate is $159 plus tax per night single or double occupancy. With the current tax structure the total would be $185.76 per night. Valet parking is available at $40 plus tax per night and self-parking is available at $25 plus tax per night. If you are arriving by air, I do not recommend renting a car. To make hotel reservations go to http://group.curiocollection.com/WestPointReunionClass58 or call 844 442 8746.

(If you have difficulty making Higgins reservations via this link, the best call number to speak with an agent is 855 271 3619.)

PLEASE MAKE YOUR HOTEL RESERVATIONS AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE!! The hotel has 230 rooms and is getting significant press. There are 60 rooms currently reserved for our Class, but I can add to that reserve as required, assuming rooms are still available. So, help me out by making reservations as soon as you decide to join us. The hotel is art deco in style and compliments the museum. Check it out at www.higginshotelnola.com.

REUNION WEBSITE - We (son, Calvin, as he did in 2007) will establish a website that will provide details about the reunion, activities available in New Orleans, local tid-bits and reunion registration info. We will recommend activities you might consider to include local restaurants, shopping, etc. Hopefully the site will be up in a few weeks. I will advise when it is available.

As included in Pete Trainor's monthly update, October 21st, the WW2 Museum has agreed to provide a 2-day museum pass for $30 per person and $7 per person for "Beyond All Boundaries" film. The museum is superb. Please check it out at www.nationalww2museum.org. You will find a number of events scheduled at the museum that might be of interest. For example, a matinee at the Stage Door Canteen on the 27th will be "Elvis: Through the Years". If it strikes your fancy make reservations or let us know and we will do it for you through the hotel. As we did in 2007, I will look for some interesting individuals that might be available to discuss topics, for those interested, in Benny Havens. We will have more activity options for you when the reunion website is available. If there are any suggestions you would like to provide regarding Mini activities, schedule or whatever, please email me at sand2988@bellsouth.net or call 504 638 3658.
