How I got my appointment to West Point
I never even thought about going to West Point or Annapolis until one of my teachers suggested I apply my senior year. Dan Reed, Congressman for the 45th District, NY (southwestern New York State) held competitive exams and I took them the Fall of 1950, checking off the square that said I'd accept an appointment to either Academy. Results came back that I was the first alternate for West Point. My principal had attended the Prep School, but as Spring of 1955 came, he got married and that moved me into his spot. Just think....I could just as easily have been a Squid!! At least then I wouldn't dread football season.
