In my opinion, ROD VITTY Class of 1955 certainly deserves this honor to be nominated for the Distinguished Graduate Award.......especially, the fact that he saved Double Day field in its present location and spearheaded the project to build this beautiful baseball stadium which is so visible for us and the public to admire. I support, with vigor, Rod Vitty as our candidate for Distinguished Graduate. Over the years he has continually dedicated his efforts to the Class of 1955 and to the US Military Academy. He has served as our Class President, he has served on the Board of the AOG in several capacities, he has more than once chaired a Class reunion committee, he has established the Class Travel Club and kept it running year after year, he agreed to assume sponsorship of the Class Ski Club, he has seen to it that historic West Point books continue to be published and available to cadets and grads, he has participated in just about every Class activity, and he has been a generous contributor to the Class fund. I am sure there are many other things he has done for the Class, on behalf of the Class and for our Alma Mater that we just haven't heard about.

USMA Class of 1955 Housing Area

Kelly Lichtenberg
[JUN 2008]


The USMA Coaches Housing Project, sponsored by the Class of 1955, under the guidance of Herb (Kelly) Lichtenberg, is completed and the seventeen houses are occupied by ODIA Corps Squad Head Coaches. The entire Housing Area is prominently identified by the Brass Plaque on the huge boulder at the entrance, which reflects 'USMA Class of 1955'.

Upon the completion of the first eight houses, Kelly 'named' each by placing a small placard with the name of an individual on the lawn in front of the house. It was his plan to continue this practice as the remaining houses were completed. When we lost Kelly, Lou Gross, class of 1954, replaced Kelly and continued the project to its completion. Three additional names were added by Lou Gross, leaving six without the placard.

A few weeks ago, Lou contacted me and asked that I provide six names for the, to date, unnamed houses. I tasked a past president of the class to organize a committee and provide six recommended names. After a very thorough and detailed process, six names were recommended, and the Class EXCOM voted to accept the recommendations. The names were provided to Lou Gross, and they will be included on the placards.

The next, and final, item to be accomplished with this project is to organize and schedule a formal presentation of this Class gift to West Point. Lou Gross and I are in the process of coordinating this with the appropriate authorities. Stay tuned, folks, for this glorious event.

2015 Distinguished Graduate Award

Mr. Roderic B. Vitty '55

For six decades and counting, Mr. Rod Vitty has never missed an opportunity to serve as an ambassador for USMA and champion West Point's impact on the Nation and its national pastime. His company, Vermont Heritage Press, has both published original works and republished classics that tell the West Point story through autobiography and historical research. He also established and personally funded The Doubleday Society, which presents an annual award to the Most Valuable Player on the Army Baseball Team. One of three cadets in Academy history to pitch a no-hitter himself, Mr. Vitty has a special connection with Army Baseball and is credited with spearheading the 'Save Doubleday Field' effort, which raised funds to help construct Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field. He also served as a West Point Regional Representative, the President of the West Point Society of Philadelphia and as an energetic and dedicated member of WPAOG's Board of Trustees.
