KUDOS: Seems there is seldom a day that goes by that someone in our class expands their 'CLAIM TO FAME', and the EXCOM is advised that broad recognition should be given , NOW!!!! McNair, Jr. President, Class of 1955 How I got my appointment to West PointThen one Tuesday night during Guard drill, the regular Army advisor to our unit, major McGann as I recall, pointed me to a flyer on the bulletin board advising the opportunity for guardsmen to apply for admission to West Point. He inquired bout my interest. Now at that time, my knowledge of West Point consisted mainly of the Academy notoriety for great football teams and wartime reports seen on movie newsreels. Anyway, after I replied that I would be interested, he could not do enough to help me through the process. When I told my dad about this, he contacted a good friend, Congressman Hoffman from the 10th Ill. District. Responding to Congressman Hoffman's instruction to take the Civil Service exam at the federal building, I scored 98 and received a principal appointment pending completion of tests at Fort Sheridan in mid-March. Bill Haas is the only member of our class that I recall from that weekend of testing. With everything going so well thus far, prospects for getting to West Point looked good. However, in mid-April, Dept of the Army requested proof of U.S. citizenship. Wow, I was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, and had only a duplicate uncertified Canadian birth report, so again my dad made things happen. Communicating with Canadian authorities and the Federal Court in Chicago, I was in record time able to get a derivative certificate of citizenship to send to West Point. It was dated June 1, 1951. Likely, our congressman had something to do with getting it so quickly. However at the same time, the Army notified me that I had a disqualifying deviated nasal septum. If I could get that condition rectified by a late May date, I could still be admitted in July. Therefore, a date for this operation with an elderly local doctor was arranged. With me under local sedation, he reworked the bones in my nose, packed both nostrils, and then commented about my tonsils. Both of them were originally removed when I was nine, but one had re-grown. The doc said that it should come out, so all I could say was go ahead - a bad move. In the recovery room, I felt blood flowing into my stomach, and after an hour, it all came out on the floor. I was back in surgery to have the severed artery sewn and to get a blood transfusion. That night was the worst that I have ever endured. Anyway, a week later, I was scheduled for pistol competition with my Guard unit, and as I began to get dressed, my throat began bleeding heavily again. By the time that my dad got me to the hospital, I passed out from blood loss. This time the doctor cauterized the artery and gave me another transfusion. Thereafter, he provided me with a letter regarding correction of the medical condition. When final instructions directing me to report to West Point arrived, I bought my parents their first television set. Three weeks later, I flew from Chicago to the predecessor to JFK airport and stayed overnight at the Esquire Hotel in New York The following morning of July 3, I joined a large number of soon to be classmates on the train to West Point, and in full silence, we made the long walk up to the sally port of West Academic Building. As I look back on the experience of those past three months, I think of God advising us that 'through much tribulation you will en Dan Ludwig 804.272.0767 1 AUG 2010 |
