Jean McCarty Katenbrink of Syria, Virginia, died at home on Saturday, September 6, 2008, following a brave battle against breast cancer. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Colonel Irvin George Katenbrink Jr. (Ret); daughters, Charlotte Catherine Katenbrink Lenhoff and Barbara Katenbrink Chesser; daughter-in-law, Terry M. Katenbrink; son-in-law, Brian Douglas Lenhoff; four grandchildren, Joshua Shawn Katenbrink, Erin Simms Halouska, Zachary Adam Chesser, and Owen Michael Chesser; and four great-grandchildren, Tyler and MacKenzie Katenbrink, and Noah and Aiden Halouska. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Cynthia Ford; extended family, Stacy Anderson, Valerie Katenbrink, Bobby Halouska, and many nieces and nephews.
Jean was preceded in death by her son, Irvin George Katenbrink III; and her parents, Cynthia Ellis Jones McCarty and Glenn Preston McCarty.
Jean was born in Greenwood, South Carolina, on June 30, 1936, and was raised in Georgia. As a devoted career army wife, she also lived in Germany, New York, Kansas, Illinois, and Virginia. In addition to being a homemaker, Jean was an executive secretary for Woodward and Lothrop in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. for many years.
Her passions were her family, her country, her friends, bridge, history, archeology, travel, and her flower garden.
Unbeknownst to many of those around her, she was involved with a number of charitable organizations. Her quiet and anonymous dedication to providing food, cloth-ing, and other necessities to those in need is a testament to her selflessness.
