THOMAS WADE HERREN JR

BORN: April 17, 1933 at Ft. McPherson (Atlanta) GA

Tom's earliest memories begin with grammar school at Ft. Benning, GA, He was an 'Army Brat', one of the two sons of then Captain Thomas W Herren, Cavalry Instructor and super polo player, who retired in 1958 as Commander, First Army, at Governors Island, New York.

Tom's high school started at San Antonio, TX while his Dad served at Ft. San Houston. The family then moved to Seoul, Korea 1946-49 where he attended Seoul American School and then Meguro High School, Tokyo, Japan for about 4 months, returning to the US in June 1949 to finish at Woodrow Wilson High School, Washington DC. Tom's time prior to entry into West Point Class of 55 was spent in the US Navy Reserve at Anacostia Naval Air Station and Sullivan's Prep School in Washington DC 1950-51. A tough Plebe year began in 1951 and one of the grandest moments of Tom's cadet career was the end of that year. His cadet company was L-2. There were seventeen in L-2 for graduation in 1955, and those classmates have remained his closest friends throughout his military and civilian years. He excelled in skeet shooting, and served as Captain of the Skeet Team for his junior and senior year and enjoyed introducing the game to Yearlings at Camp Buckner the summer of 1954. He was thrilled to have his younger brother, John, follow him into West Point in 1953, and to also have his family close by at Governors Island, New York, where his Dad was Commanding General, First Army.

Tom's military career began with a year at the Infantry School at Ft. Benning, GA, and included Airborne Training. His first duty assignment was to the 4th Armored Division, Ft. Hood, TX, and he deployed as a 2nd Lt. with the 2nd Bn, 50th Inf, 4th Armored Division to Erlangen, Germany. Duty assignments during the following three years included service as Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer and Asst. Bn. S4. Off-duty activities included an introduction to Porsche automobiles and racing instruction at the Nurburgring with instructors Wolfgang von Tripps and Sterling Moss being the most remembered. His love of cars, particularly Porsche's, continued throughout his life.

He returned to Ft. Benning for the Infantry Career course in 1960, and remained at Ft. Benning for the next two years as an instructor with the Weapons Department. It was also during this period that he married his first wife, Patience, and was then transferred to lst Cav Division at Nublori, Korea, serving a year as Company Commander, and as S3 and S2 from 1963 to 1964. His son, Wade, was born during this tour in Korea. Reassignment from Korea took the family to Univ of Rhode Island, ROTC duty and a Masters Degree in Economics. His one son was joined by a sister, Kyle, born while on this ROTC assignment.

From ROTC duty Tom was ordered to Vietnam ! From teaching it to doing it ! He was a Major now and the year Sept 1967 to Sept 1968 started with his assignment as XO, 1st Bn, 50th In, to move with them from Ft. Hood, Texas to Vietnam by ship, where they were the first armored infantry battalion assigned to the lst Cav Division. He was the Battalion XO for 4 months and then transferred to lst Cav Div to be the S3, 2nd Bde, 1st Cav Division just prior to the advance to the DMZ and the relief of the lst Marine Division at Khe Sanh. The 2d Bde was still operating against regular NVA forces crossing the DMZ in that part of Vietnam when his tour completed in 1968. He was happy to rejoin his wife and both children in Annapolis, MD where she had spent the 'war year' near her family.

In 1969 Tom moved to Ft. Leavenworth, KS for a years study at Command and General Staff College. This year also allowed him to obtain a private pilots license thru the flying club instructors at Ft. Leavenworth. He continued this 'hobby' thru the lessons and flight time necessary for instrument, commercial and flight instructors rating. This was a wonderful pastime for the next fifteen years. He also renewed his skeet and trap shooting, which remained an active hobby. He returned to Washington DC in 1971 after the year at Ft. Leavenworth and joined the 'Action Officers' of the Chief of Staff, Operations (G3) at the Pentagon, with a home in Falls Church, VA, very close to his parents in Washington, DC just across the Potomac River. One of his significant products was the creation of the Army Unified Command Plan. This documentation earned him the Legion of Merit. After three year in the Pentagon he become director, Infantry Weapons Development Branch, in the newly created Operational Test and Evaluation Agency (OTEA). He and Patience were divorced in 1975. Tom retired in 1976 after 21 years of service to work as consultant with Systems Planning Corporation.

In 1978 Tom met and married Peggy, whose husband, Len Hanawald, Class '57, was KIA in Vietnam nine years earlier. She brought with her two lovely daughters, Sarah and Jennifer. Tom continued working with System Planning Corp. until 1982, when offered a consulting position with MITRE Corporation managing Strategic Command and Control Systems development. In this office he maintained liaison with joint headquarters operational activities in Korea and NATO, and especially USAEUR until early 1990. At that time the Army contingent of MITRE was discontinued.

In 1993 Peggy and Tom decided to relocate to a Jacksonville, Florida golf course community, close to the beach, and his lake properties near Dadeville, Alabama. Tom leaves a brother, Retired Col John Daniel Herren, Class 1958, and his wife, Sally, in Bethesda, MD. His daughter, Katherine Kyle Herren, married Roger Mody, retired President of Signal Corp, and they have a son, Max with them in McLean, VA. His son Wade is married to Syd, and owns and manages a construction firm from their home in Manassas, VA.

Tom's time on this earth has been blessed by friendships and experiences of service in the United Sates Army. Disappointments have been countered by unparalleled joys of accomplishment and a loving family.

Patience (Saunders) Herren



Patience (Saunders) Herren passed away peacefully in her home on the morning of May 28, 2015 in Falls Church, Virginia. She was 73 years old.

Patience was the daughter of Eleanore Kyle and Admiral Willard A. Saunders of Harold Harbor, Kyle Point, MD. She attended Mary Washington College before serving over 30 years in the health care field. Her fondest memories always included her childhood overseas, military life, her career and community of neighbors.

Patience was an avid reader, gardener, family historian and spent many years involved in wild life rescue. Over her career Patience was influential raising mental health awareness across the region and was honored by the Governor of Maryland for her achievements. She lived in the Holmes Run Community for over 40 years and recently received the 'Distinguished Citizen Award' for her service and dedication to the community.

Patience is survived by her bother Cmdr Wesley W Saunders, sister Eleanore Sunderland, son, T. Wade Herren, III, daughter, Katherine Kyle Mody, grandchildren; Max Mody, Mikelyn Pearson, Alex, Erika and Zack Mody, Kaydence and Tyler Pearson and many nieces, nephews, family, close friends and neighbors.

Patience will be honored in a private ceremony. Murphy Funeral Home has graciously provided an online guest book under Patience Saunders Herren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wildlife Rescue League, WRL, P.O. Box 704, Falls Church, VA 22040.

Thomas Wade Herren, Jr.

It is my sad duty to inform you that Tom Herren died this morning in Jacksonville, Fla. Tom had been suffering from inoperable lung cancer and was under hospice care. He is survived by his wife, Peggy. I have not yet received information on services planned for Tom, but will forward that information when received. Jim Darrah has volunteered to serve as LCA to the family.

Thomas Wade Herren, Jr.

LTC Thomas Wade Herren, Jr., age 84, of Jacksonville Florida, died August 12, 2017 in Jacksonville after a brief illness. Tom was born at Ft. McPherson, GA, in 1933 to Thomas Wade and Lillian Corcoran Herren. He graduated from the United States Military Academy (West Point) in 1955 and his L-2 classmates remained among his closest friends throughout his life. Tom served with distinction for 21 years in the United States Army (Infantry), achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He served in troop and staff commands in Germany, Korea, and Vietnam. In the latter assignment, he fought with the 1st Cavalry Division in some of the hardest fighting of the war against regular North Vietnamese Units that infiltrated into South Vietnam during the TET Offensive. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star Medal and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm for his actions in Vietnam 1967-1968. Later, on the Army Staff, he received the Legion of Merit for his distinguished work on the Army Unification Command Plan. Tom retired in 1976 and had a second career as a military consultant.

Tom is survived by his wife, Margaret Allen Herren, his brother John Daniel Herren, and his sister-in-law Sally Hand Herren. He leaves behind his children: Thomas Wade Herren III (Sydney), Kyle Herren Mody (Roger), Sarah Hanawald (Bryan), and Jennifer Hanawald (Warren) and six grandchildren: Mikelyn, Olivia, Julianna, Caroline, Georgia, and Max.

An avid hobbyist, Tom actively pursued his interests in skeet shooting, Porsche racing, golf, and flying throughout his life. His shooting skill earned him countless medals as well as the distinction of serving as the captain of the West Point Skeet team for two years. Tom taught his children, along with his son and daughter-in-laws, nieces, and nephews, to drive and shoot. In retirement, Tom was able to share his knowledge with the larger community, serving as a driving instructor and president of the Porsche Club.

Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Monday, August 21, 2017 at Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Tom's memory to Community Hospice & Palliative Care Foundation.

There will be a local funeral service in Jacksonville, FL on Monday 21 August at 1300 hrs at Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra. Address is 400 San Juan Dr., Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082. There will be a funeral service with full military honors and burial at Arlington Cemetery later on this year or early in 2018.

My wife, Billie, accompanied me to Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, where we were invited to a gathering of the family and friends at the Jacksonville Golf and Country Club on Sunday, 20 August 2017, to renew acquaintances and recall memories of Tom Herren. I presented a slide show of photos of Tom gleaned from my own files and the class web site together with many family photos provided by Tom's daughter-in-law, Sydney Herren. Tom's wife, Peggy, and the family expressed great appreciation for the presentation.

We attended the funeral and Celebration of the Life of Tom on 21 Aug 2017, at Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The beautiful ceremony was very well attended by many of Tom and Peggy's friends from the local area. At the service, Tom's brother, John D. Herren (USMA 1958), delivered a moving eulogy remembering his early days growing up with Tom and their service as Infantry officers. Following the service, a reception was held in the church fellowship hall. Memorabilia from Tom's life was displayed at the reception.

Thomas Wade 'Tom' Herren Jr. was born on April 17, 1933 at Fort McPherson, GA, one of two sons of then Captain Thomas W. Herren and Lillian H. Herren. An Army brat, Tom grew up on various Army posts throughout the South. He learned how to ride horses and hunt quail from his father, a skilled horseman, champion polo player, and avid bird hunter.

In 1946, his father, who had fought in World War II in France and Germany, was ordered to Seoul, Korea to be the chief of staff to the CG, Army forces. His family followed him, spending three years there and another six months in Japan. Tom attended the American School in Seoul and Meguro High School in Tokyo, returning to the United States in 1949 to finish high school in Washington, DC. Prior to his entry into the West Point Class of 1955, he attended Sullivan's Prep School in Washington, DC.

Tom's cadet years were in Company L-2, where his easy-going good nature fit right in. He maintained close contact with them after graduation. He managed to give academics its due, but was more interested in extra-curricular activities, such as the Pistol, Ordnance, and Skeet clubs. He was captain of the Skeet Team his last two years. He was happy to have his brother John follow him into West Point in 1953 and also to have his family close by at Governors Island, NY, where his father was the CG, First Army.

Tom's military career began at Fort Benning, GA, where he attended the Infantry School, followed by airborne training. His first duty assignment was with the 2nd Battalion, 50th Infantry, 4th Armored Division, Fort Hood, TX, and in 1957 he deployed to Erlangen, Germany with the division. His three years there were in various troop assignments. Off-duty activities included an introduction to Porsche automobiles and racing instruction at the Nürburgring motorsport complex with two famous instructors, Wolfgang von Tripps and Sterling Moss. His love of cars, particularly Porsches, continued throughout his life. He passed his racing skill on to his son Wade, who also owns and races Porsches.

Tom returned to Fort Benning for the Infantry Officer Career Course in 1960, and for the next two years he was an instructor with the Weapons Department. It was during this period that he married his first wife, Patience, a Navy brat. Next was a one-year tour in Korea, highlighted by command of a company in the 1st Cavalry Division. His son Wade was born during this tour. In 1964, he was assigned as an ROTC instructor at the University of Rhode Island and while there obtained a master's degree in economics. His daughter Kyle was born during this assignment.

From ROTC duty Tom was ordered to Vietnam in 1967: 'From teaching it to doing it!' Now a major, he joined the 1st Battalion, 50th Infantry Regiment and moved with them from Fort Hood to Vietnam by ship. They were the first armored infantry battalion assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division. Shortly thereafter he transferred to the lst Cavalry Division to be the S3, 2nd Brigade, just prior to its advance to the DMZ and the relief of the lst Marine Division at Khe Sanh. His brigade had some hard fighting against regular NVA forces, crossing the DMZ until the end of his tour in 1968. His actions with the brigade earned him a Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal with 'V' device, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. He was happy to rejoin his wife and both children in her family's home in Annapolis, MD.

In 1969 Tom attended the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS. During his free time he obtained a private pilot's license through the base-flying club. This was a wonderful pastime for him for the next 15 years. Tom's next assignment was with the Army Operations Staff at the Pentagon, and his family settled in Falls Church, VA. One of his significant accomplishments at the Pentagon was his work on the Army Unified Command Plan, which earned him the Legion of Merit. In 1975, after three years in the Pentagon, he became director, Infantry Weapons Development Branch, in the Operational Test and Evaluation Agency. During this time he and Patience were divorced. Tom retired from the Army in 1976, after 21 years of service, to work as a consultant with Systems Planning Corporation.

In 1978 Tom met and married Peggy Hanawald, whose previous husband, Len Hanawald, was a West Point grad who was KIA in Vietnam nine years earlier. Peggy brought two lovely young daughters, Sarah and Jennifer, into the Herren family. Tom continued working as a consultant with MITRE Corporation. Retiring in 1993, Tom and Peggy decided to move to a Jacksonville, FL golf club community, close to Peggy's twin brother, the beach, and Tom's lake properties near Dadeville, AL.

Tom actively pursued his interests in skeet shooting, Porsche racing, golf, and flying throughout his life, and he loved to teach driving and skeet shooting to many of his family. He became the president of the Jacksonville Porsche Club and served as a race-driving instructor. Tom loved his L-2 classmates, and he was an eager participant in company reunions, cruises and social get-togethers. Jim Darrah wrote, 'Tom was his oldest and best friend. He never placed himself above others.' Tom's time on earth has been blessed by friendships and experiences of service in the Army. Disappointments have been countered by unparalleled joys of accomplishment and a loving family. Tom leaves Peggy, his wife of 39 years, his brother, son, three daughters, grandson, and four granddaughters. We will all sorely miss Tom.
