Optional Tours & Events, Birmingham 2013 Mini Wednesday (Day 2) April 24 Hyundai Assembly Plant (Tour H-1) Max tour group size is 32. Tour
Group H-1 departs the Wynfrey at 7:30 and buses directly to the Hyundai plant
for a 9:30 to 11:00 tour. The plant
tour is conducted on a tram, so there is minimal walking. There
will be time before & after the tour to visit the gift shop. After the Hyundai tour, Tour Group H-1 busses
to the Drummond residence where Bulldog and Jeanne will host a luncheon from
11:30 to 1:00. There is a 15-minute rest
stop on the return trip to the Wynfrey. Three openings available Hyundai Assembly Plant (Tour H-2) Max tour group size is 32. Tour
Group H-2 departs the Wynfrey at 9:35 and busses directly to the Drummond
residence for the 11:30 to 1:00 luncheon.
After lunch, Tour Group H-2 busses to the Hyundai plant for a 2:00 to
3:30 tour. There is time before the tour
to visit the gift shop. There is a
15-minute rest stop on the return journey to the Wynfrey. Three openings available Luncheon Only Transportation (LOT) The H-2 bus is a 37-passenger
bus. There are 5 seats available on that
bus for individuals who wish to attend the luncheon at the Drummond
residence. Individuals electing this
option will depart the Wynfrey at 9:35, arrive at the Drummond residence at
11:30, depart the Drummonds at 1:00, and arrive back at the Wynfrey at
3:20. There is a 15-minute rest stop on
the return journey to the Wynfrey. The
cost per individual for riding the bus is $20.00. Five seats available U.S. Space & Rocket
Center (Tour RC-1) Max tour group size is 25. Tour
Group RC-1 departs the Wynfrey at 8:45, and with a 15-minute rest stop
en-route, arrives at the Space Visitors Center at 11:00 where the group will
see a space-oriented 45-minute I-Max film.
After the film, the group will lunch in the Visitors Center (cost
included in tour price). During lunch, Astronaut and L-1 Classmate Don Peterson
will describe his time in space as a crew member on Challenger's maiden voyage and will answer questions. After lunch, tour participants will proceed
with Don to the Museum for a guided tour.
Gift shops are available in both the Visitors Center and the Museum. Five openings
available Golf Fred Pirkey has arranged the golf outing at Oxmoor
Valley, one of the prestigious Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail courses. For specific questions, contact Fred at
770-667-3558. Golfers will depart the
Wynfrey around 7:30 using transportation provided by golfers who drove to the
reunion or by members of the reunion committee.
The $80 fee is the green and cart fee as of May 1, 2011. Club house lunches are excellent. Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) The national Catholic television network studios are located in
Irondale, a Metro Birmingham suburb. Bill and Paula Edwards have volunteered to
arrange visits and tours for those interested.
A Wed evening tour is planned.

April 25 American Village (Tour
AV) Max tour group size is 37. Tour
Group AV departs the Wynfrey at 9:15 and arrives at American Village at 10:00. Participants are guided through a
revolutionary era village with authentic building reproductions where costumed
enactors such as Patrick Henry, Paul Revere and Martha Washington render famous
orations or describe events. Lunch
(included in the tour price) catered by Full Moon Bar-B-Que
will be served in the village picnic ground. One opening available U.S. Space & Rocket
Center (Tour RC-2) Max tour size is 25. Itinerary, times, and details including Astronaut and L-1 Classmate Don Peterson's
presence and presentation are the same as the Wednesday U.S. Space &
Rocket Center (Tour RC-1). Five openings available Friday (Day 4) April
26 Marion Military
Institute (Tour MMI) Max tour group size is 15. Tour
Group MMI departs the Wynfrey at 9:45 and with a 15-minute rest stop en-route
arrives in Marion at 11:30. MMI is a
military junior college whose students include a large USMAP contingent. On average, 23 MMI graduates enter USMA as
plebes each July. The tour will commence
with a briefing followed by observing the MMI Corps of Cadets form up and march to lunch. The
tour group will have a light lunch (cost included in tour price) in a private
dining room on campus. Post-lunch
activities will include a campus bus tour and an informal meeting with selected
cadets who are scheduled to enter as USMA plebes in July. Ten openings
available Birmingham (Tour B-1/2) Max tour group size is 32. The
tour group departs the Wynfrey at 9:30, arrives at the Birmingham Museum of Art
at approximately 10:00, spends an hour touring the Museum of Art, and then
buses to the Botanical Gardens for lunch, which is included in the tour
cost. After lunch, the group is guided
by master gardener and classmate Larry Michalove on a one-hour docent walking
tour of the Japanese Garden. The return
to the Wynfrey includes a 30-minute riding tour of the Birmingham Mountain
Brook area. In the event of inclement weather, a tour of the Civil Rights
Institute will replace the walking tour of the Japanese Garden. Eleven openings
available Birmingham (Tour B-3) Max tour group size is 37. This
tour group departs the Wynfrey at 9:30, arriving at the Birmingham Botanical
Gardens a 10:00 where the group will spend 2 ½ hours - a one-hour docent walking
tour of the Japanese Garden guided by master gardener and classmate Larry
Michalove followed by 20 minutes browsing the gift shop, and one hour for a
botanical garden served lunch, which is included in the tour cost. Following lunch, the group will bus to the
Vulcan Park and Museum for a one-hour tour.
The return to the Wynfrey includes a 30-minute riding tour of the
Birmingham Mountain Brook area. In the
event of inclement weather, a tour of the Civil Rights Institute will replace
