1Lt. Dimitri A. Del Castillo, 24, of Tampa, Florida died June 25, at Kunar province, Afghanistan of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. He was on the radio calling in support when he was hit. He kept working on the support until he died with the handset in his hand.

Lt. Del Castillo graduated earned his Airborne patch at the academy and Ranger School in May 2011. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Parachutist Badge, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal and the NATO Medal.

He is survived by his wife Katie, who was in the same brigade. Katie and Dimitri met at Camp Buckner while at West Point. They were in the same Company. They were married in Dec. just before their deployment to Afghanistan. He is also survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carlos E. Del Castillo, his brother, Carlos Andres and sister Anna.
